The Joy Of Growing - SweetSue Goes Perpetual

I have a bad habit of getting frozen looking at my plants. I'll stand there and stare and stare totally transfixed. I've been doing this for years so I know there is no point at which I am going to ever get 'satisfied' or tired of standing there. I always have to painfully tear myself away and close the door. People talk about washing buds and finding all sorts of stuff that was stuck to them- I'm sort of like that stuff. If it was possibly to find myself stuck to a bud I would. Tonight as I was staring at the flowering girls a bumblebee came flying through the open door and straight to a bud and -plop- there it landed, took about a half step and was 100@% completely stuck in my Thai sativa. I picked it up in my shirt and put it outside. Silly bee I thought, as I went back to staring.

I thought I was the only one who did that HAHA!

Daily Update: Perpetual Tent - Week 11, Day 3

Another day to dabble in the tent. This morning I determined it was finally time to reset the tent interior and hang the lights the way I want them. In the end I reconfigured the whole interior, shifting the shelves to the back and setting up the main dance floor right inside the opening. It's a simple matter to get to the shelves and it made it easier to split the electrical draw between two different circuits. The fan, filter and LED panels are on a dedicated circuit that Dale and I ran for his hobby lights and needs, and everything else runs of a little-used hallway circuit.

All set to go.

Now for a look at the girls. I apologize for the substandard nature of these photos. Lighting was bad and for some reason it didn't occur to me to take pictures in natural light while they waited on the balcony. Too focused on the work at hand, I guess.

There are only two seedlings up out of the 8 planted. I don't call that good odds. I had 4 for 4 in the Tiny Closet and 2 for 8 in here. So what's the tiny closet have going that the tent doesn't? 18/6 lighting. Regardless, I should be able to do better than this. Let's give the new plantings time to come up and see what those 4 have to offer. I looked into BAR's method and it would be cost-prohibitive on this scale. I'm certainly not the first gardener to get challenged by germinating.

Both of these seedlings, the Strawberry Blue on the right, and the Auto Jack Herer on the left, are 7 days old now.

Auto Destroyer (Day 70) has started cranking out some white pistils, but everything's so hidden by those fan leaves she insists on holding so close. It's hard to tell from the plant structure when it's thirsty, so I'm checking weight. Almost time for another drench, this time just water with 1/4 Trans and Tea. If not tomorrow, then Thursday for sure.

African Buzz (Day 69) and still working away at blooming. No signs of slowing down.

Cheese Candy (Day 70) still doing her feline thing, only now she's front and center. Smells divine.

One last glance and then it's time to move on. I still need to hang the T8s on the bottom shelf.

That's the show and tell today folks. Now I need to dash out to pick up my new glasses. WooHoo! Sight without the dang spot right there in my field of vision. I think I'll treat myself to a baked potato and coleslaw for dinner and watch the river run for a while.

First a nice buzz. It got a bit rough earlier. I'm trying to be grateful for the expressions of grief. So far that's just been painful. Well, it did settle the turmoil faster, so maybe there's something to be said for this approach, but I hurt emotionally right now and that needs tended to. This is, after all, why I grow.

Have a wonderful end to what I hope was a delightful day. I pray you found many opportunities to spread bits of joy, large and small all over your world. I'm going out now and am resolved to do some joyful expression of my own. I'll see you around the threads.

random garden thoughts

I'm sitting here trying to not be frustrated about unsuccessful germinating when it occurred to me that I have plenty of seeds and plenty of space, and thanks to Ziggy's inspiration, I have a tent that runs 11/13 all the time. This means it doesn't matter when anything sprouts or when anything needs shifted. This tent can be designed to be completely fluid.

Think of it : there's always room to shift things around from one slot to another no matter when it needs to happen. The lights are on no matter what, if there's anything under them. Now, it's not lost on me that I can pull this off because it's just me and the daughter I grow for, so I can be less concerned with yield and more focused on variety and quality.

OK, I'm feeling better about this as I continue to type. I can breathe here and remember that the grow has no set timeline. Say that again Susan. This tent has no set time line. The time lines are set by the individual plants. It's my responsibility to schedule properly so we avoid overcrowding. Overcrowding creates stress, stress attracts pests.

That's worth remembering in your personal life Susan. What does stress attract in your life? How much are you enjoying that, eh?

Later on that. Back to the tent. So, take the time with bag seeds to learn to germinate successfully.

Forget about the common grow paradigm of starting a batch at once. Focus on individuals and take your time. Learn to do it your way Susan. The tent runs itself. You just introduce the characters and do the nurturing. They need water. Don't forget that. It's your siingle biggest failing as a gardener. It's killed worms too Girl. Water. They need water.

And you guys really wonder why I'm such a fan of the SWICK? My history is that plants left under my care suffer and die. The SWICK transformed me into someone who could keep plants alive.

Time to go. I need the glasses. Enough rambling. :ciao:

Fwiw Sue, I usually germinate my seeds in a damp cloth or paper towel, in a container with the lid on, somewhere warm. I can see when they sprout- usually on second or third day. I like being able to see that they sprouted before I plant them.

This is the way my mother always did hers. It gets a lot of bad press, but it's worth a try. I need to get one of those cool straws like Canna uses, or cut my own. Thanks Weaselcracker. It was worth a lot.

I have the same problem too. Just don't stare at them under HID lights or you will ruin your eyes.

Thanks CC you've pushed me over the edge finally into putting a resident pair of sunglasses in there tonight.

Bad press? I didn't know. I wonder why. It gives the seed perfect sprouting conditions, which I have full control over, and I never have to dig the poor thing up to look at it. I'll check out the 'cool straws' sounds interesting.

No glasses. They mixed me up with someone else - go figure. :laughtwo: I was surprised that they were so speedy. Obviously I had a right to be surprised. :laughtwo:

It gave me a good reason to hit the salad bar and watch the river run while contemplating the tent. I haven't yet found a place of comfort with the tent. I'm getting close, but it may take one more complete rework before I'm done. I keep looking at the filter and thinking about standing it on top of those shelves blowing straight up. Would that work?

Anyone have any thoughts on that?

9 PM. Let me get home and do today's meditation so I can start studying. This has been so pleasant it's hard to leave. There's a sweet cool breeze coming up river. I'll be able to open windows tonight.

Ahhh...... The breeze feels wonderful. Come on Girl. Gotta go.

In a minute.

I purchased these Active Eye Grow Room Glasses for about $20. They work well for HPS, OK for LED.

The dark line in the center of the photo is the frame of the glasses. normally worn, they are clear like sunglasses.

If you stand it on top of the shelf that means the shelf has to stay in that part of the room.
I don't see you getting much more ceiling space, so I wouldn't think it is worth it.

That top shelf makes a good place to set a mesh hamper full of drying bud.

Are you going to hang dry harvest in your tent? (I do)
If so, you may want to think about a place to mount a horizontal string (multiple branches.).

My thought on standing it was to shift the shelf to the right wall running front to back (opposite where it was before) and stand the filter and fan back in that corner, which should free up the other half of that top shelf. My concern is that it might be too heavy for the shelf, and now that I think about it, maybe keep it where it is.

I wasn't planning to hang to dry in the tent. I have a nice, dark breezeway type of hallway running to the kitchen that makes a good place to dry. I've also made good use of a clothes dryer with weed blocker cloth lightly draped over to cut light but still allow airflow.

I could use the tent though, and cut down of perfume. I like the smell of drying cannabis and I live alone, but that could get problematic, with multiple harvests drying at once.

I have that grid work of wire shelving mounted to the ceiling of the tent that would offer multiple points to hang from. I like using soft tie wire to hook them up. It appeals to me asthetically, looking like tendrils. Haha!! See? Everything's an art project to me. :laughtwo:

Yes!

This is how I positioned my Can 33:

I was lucky in that I had a round metal grill kicking around that allowed me to winch it up from the bottom. Those things are awkward! I hitched it to the top using a rope and two light hangers. If I were making it more permanent I would replace the hangers with rope or wire. I think I'll do the same when I move the filter to the bigger tent that is on its way.

I think hanging it vertically provides plenty of surface area for air to enter the filter, while minimizing the ceiling space used in the tent. I will place the fan outside of the tent.

Cheers! :peace::passitleft:

Brilliant! I have chain that would secure it. I like the idea of the grill. That is very doable. How will you mount the fan? I guess what I'm asking is will you be supporting it from above or just have it supported by the filter? Ooooo, so many ideas running through my head. I need another hit.

stove pipe will work wont it?
