The Beauty Of The Changing Seasons

I've got lots of Red tailed hawks around here, and I see the Barred owls quite often. Usually I hear them before I locate them. Very tell tale hoots they have. LOL When I first moved out here, a couple of times while sitting in my tree stand an Owl would just appear out of nowhere and grab a chipmunk or squirrel right in front of me. You don't hear them coming until they are there and then the swoosh catches up with him. It's a sight to see.

My time lapse will take pictures at the rate of 1 every 5 seconds, and with a big enough memory card I can get almost 30 hours on it. Hopefully we'll have some flying action, or a stare down. :)

I would of loved to get the owl grabbing a snack. As a matter of fact I set aside a picture of a squirrel I think was it's intended victim.

As the winter was finishing up I would watch him (he had a big old pair :0 ) in his normal routine. Then suddenly one day it looked like he had some patching on both of his sides. A few days to a week go by and his hair fell out, in what looked to be a specific pattern. Some zoomed in photos showed it to be a gash on each side. My immediate thought was the owl tried to snag him. Unfortunately he passed not too long after and he was buried in the flower bed. RIP Squirly!

It's pretty amazing how we take things for granted. I lived/watched this guy for years, he even became photogenic. He also had what appeared to be a grandkid or something that came to visit every year around the same time. I know it sounds silly to some but after he was gone, it was genuinely different. Point is, stop and smell the roses, they might appeal to you! :;):

Congratulations, and I wish the best of luck to one of the new moderators to this site: Relaxed Lester :cheertwo:

What? WHAT? Nobody told me. *puts on best suit and tie and rushes over to Lester's journal to congratulate him*

Does that mean we've got to be REALLY well behaved now?

Add a little humor back now! Everybody does it! :)

:rofl::rofl: Yepper, everybody and everything.....

Thanks for the pic of the likable squirrel, that's a good shot. I just love how they eat upside down without a problem. :) Too bad he didn't make it, but that's all about nature's way. IMO

Mr. Teddy, we are always behaving here. No worries.....so far

Hi, Cannafan. How are you doing? Great to see some snow. We really need it here this winter. There was absolutely none last year and, apart from the disaster that was for the little ski resort here, it gave us all terrible water restrictions this summer. If we get it then the springs brooks and waterfalls on the mountain will be running again next year. And then I'll have some good pics for you. :cheesygrinsmiley:
 Mr Teddy x

Hi Mr. & Mrs. Teddy and all the kiddies!

I used to really love the springs and waterfalls after the melt off in the Blue Ridge Mountains here. It was so pretty! I'm sure you will have some great pics when the time arrives. What are your local predictions for the season? Any snow in the experts thoughts? Do you follow Farmers Almanac predictions at all?

I am going at this winter with a whole new outlook. I'm going to find all of the beauty in it, instead of concentrating on the negatives. That ought to really help me deal with it. LOL
I'm actually looking forward to a good ol' ice day, because the trees look so pretty covered in ice with the sun shining on them.

A challenge for SmokesdaKush.....

You have so much farmland around, nice clear space and lots of snow, and plenty of live subjects for models.... I challenge you to build...and owl snow sculpture:

Isn't that awesome?

Gets my thinking cap on for the front yard. LOL

I feel so silly today. It was really cold, 70, and I put on my Bear Traps, leather jacket and a pashmina. They looked at me funny as everyone else was in their shorts and tshirts in the store. But, every now and then I'd see another woman dressed for the fall because she craves winter clothes like me, and we give the nod. Fun times.

Ive seen in Darwin, ski jackets come out for the mornings, in the middle of winter, at a freezing (for them) 70, lol. Couldn't believe what I was seeing. And I'm sure they were cupping their hands and blowing into them for warmth, lol.

Hey, that's the spirit, Canna. :cheesygrinsmiley: Mrs Teddy gets properly low in Jan/Feb and last winter (our first here) was terrible because she was deeply and unexpectedly homesick too. (We almost went back to London). I think this winter will be much easier however because she's very happily settled here now, has her quilting studio set up and has her meds for the back pain (both conventional and home-grown :cheesygrinsmiley:).

Well, last year's winter forecast was for 2-3 metres of snow. So that was completely wrong. I don't think anybody knows here. And this mountain weather can change so fast too. I really hope we get some snow, both for the summer water, the local economy and so I can go skiing. Well, better get moving now - I've got 3 tons of logs arriving that will need stacking. *puts on checked shirt and boots and thinks he's 25 again* :laughtwo:

Lol, Not sure I'm gifted enough to pull that off. If I could dig up a photo of some of the snow though... Last year was insane. It was almost as tall as me through most of our yard.

Today it wont be warmer than 60. Brrrrr. We are going to fire up the heat to burn off whatever is in the thing from the hot, dusty attic summer. We will probably need heat tonight as it was only in the upper 40 this morning. I think it is time to put the greenhouse up again. This year I am concentrating on milkweeds and native grasses. I want to grow as many as I can.

Yepper Dennise, they are predicting another of the likes of 76-78. I left my state after those two winters. When I could see my car in the driveway, it was packed and I was gone!

Your snowfall did stick, hopefully it's melting off today? We were in the low 20's this morning. Had to turn on the electric blanket. LOL

I remember back in my early twenties I took a trip to Florida with a friend. It was 72 degrees out and I was in the back yard of our hosts house in a lawn chair with a bikini on soaking in the rays. Back home was in the lower twenties.
The neighbors kept looking at me like I was crazy as they passed by in their jackets and heavy sweaters. 72 is quite chilly for those who live there year round and they adapt to the climate.
I would imagine lower 20's would be a heat wave for those close to the north pole. :laughtwo:
