Tales From The Krip!

PLANNING THE DRY & CURE

I've been trying to decide how I'm gonna dry & cure all these buds. I threw out my old DIY drying box with odor control when I had the house construction going on and, even if I built another, I don't think it will be big enough to do the job.

In addition, I really don't have much space, either to setup my old 2'x4' tent to do the drying, or in the refrigerator for a "low & slow" dry, which I've been wanting to try.

So, I just ordered a 2'x3'x5' grow tent. I'm going to try to set it up right next to the flower tent, if I can squeeze it in. I'll then run some ducting from the flower tent to the dry tent and let the carbon scrubber pull the air from the drying tent into the flower tent.

By adjusting the openings on BOTH tents, I should be able to control how much airflow is going through the drying tent. Close the vents on the drying tent and open them on the flower tent to reduce the air in the drying tent, and do the opposite to increase the airflow.

Both tents have a port in the top where I'll connect the ducting. This should force the air up through the buds in the drying tent and bring the air into the top of the flower tent right where the carbon scrubber is. So, I'm pretty sure I can do this without the humidity getting too high in the flower tent and causing budrot there, which is my biggest concern with this strategy.

If it doesn't look like it will work once I get it setup, I'll get add a 2nd carbon scrubber/fan to the drying tent, but, I think I can get away with NO power to the drying tent since it doesn't need lights and can use the fan in the flower tent.

I have some 5 gallon food-grade buckets I'll use, with some turkey bags, for the cure.

This whole strategy now has me re-thinking how I can get the breeding program started. Not sure it makes sense to do another custom cabinet when I have two more grow tents available, but again, it's a matter of space & stealth.

I don't want males throwing pollen in a tent sitting right next to my flower tent, but possibly can use the new tent for veg and the current veg cab for the breeding, so I'll need to give this some more thought before I make the final decisions.

Happy Harvests!

Big moves krip! Looking stunning and if you need some space to store Nugs I have a few rooms here :p
Keep up the solid work man and good luck with the new tent and drying area! I’m sure you will make it work!

Sounds like a proper solution Krip! I do,encourage you to try low and slow even if it's just a few bags worth. Then you'll go out and buy one of those small fridges just for low and slow! They're pretty inexpensive and you can find one even cheaper on CL. You're gonna love low and slow, guaranteed! :yummy::yummy:

I'm definitely going to do as much as possible with the "low & slow" method! I'm anticipating all four plants will be harvested within a week, or so, of each other since they're all listed at about 56-62 days. Even if all the breeders' estimates are wrong, assuming they're all wrong by the same amount, I'm gonna have a busy week around mid-December, or so!

Even using the "low & slow" method, I still need to wash & hang the buds first, so I'll wash & hang the first plant or three to get harvested then move them to the fridge. Then, I'll wash & hang the rest and leave them in the dry tent to finish drying so I can move the next round into the flower tent to finish vegging.

I do have a good-sized house and no wife/kids I can blame for taking up the space. But, I work from home and between making one bedroom my office, another one a music studio (that's where I have the veg cabinet!), I'm in the tropics so no basement and the garage gets too hot. I actually have the flower tent in my bedroom so getting some COBS are sounding pretty good to me (or, NOT sounding at all, which sounds pretty good to me!).

Because I have a dog, I want to make sure the buds are hanging someplace "clean" where I don't have to worry about dog hair getting on the buds. And, I make my dog all of his own dog food so he's not eating chemicals his whole life and that takes up a TON of fridge & freezer space! I'm hoping to make some room in the garage for a freezer just to store the dog's food but not a lot of room in there, either, between two cars and a woodworking shop (table saw, band saw, drill press, etc!).

In other words, I'd already have another fridge, if I had any space!

I'm working on it, though, Brother, and I'll figure something out! Not sure I really need a dishwasher & oven, or maybe the dining room table can go? :hmmmm:

Plants trimmed nicely under canopy. Your girls look about as far a long as my Red Diesel. What size pots are you using? They look large. Having 2, outdoor seasons under my belt I know have a better understanding of pot size vs plant size. But you trim yours well and do not over grow your space. It took me a few runs to figure the right fit in my tent. I'm loving the circumference you get on your grow, I do not veg that long in my space, it's run and gun.

Great job,

Cheers

Thanks, Brother, I like to be able to see "up their skirts", if you know what I mean!

I originally had four in #10's but decided to cull a Barney's Badd Azz Kush that just wasn't too healthy and I didn't want to have to fight a sick plant in flower, so I replaced her with a White Widow in a #5; and, when I saw that wasn't catching up to the others in time to fill up the space, I threw a Blackwater clone in at the last minute in a SIP that's about the size of a #3. The real plan is to have four plants in #10's, though.

I've been growing with LED's since I started and this is my first grow in a 6' tent (my last one was 5') so I think I've gotten used to trying to fill up the space horizontally with a nice, even canopy which, IMHO, is where the LED's perform best. Even 10w chips don't have anywhere near the canopy penetration of a 600w HPS/HID/CMH.

That being said, I would have liked to see another foot, or, so from each plant but, other than the Blackwater, there's been very little stretch in the first 2 weeks of 12/12. Overall, though, I'm very happy with this grow, so far, and should get a decent yield.

Thanks, Brother! I knew I could count on your help and I'll let you know if I don't get the space issue straightened out! :high-five:

Yep, I thought I was looking at 10's. I tried 7's last grow and they got to big for the tent. Moreover, the lights I ran 600, 315, did not penetrate at all and my yield was lousey. But now I'll just run 8, 5's, in a 5x5. Seems to work nicely.

Cheers

QUICK UPDATE

It's been a VERY busy week and haven't had much time to update but just grabbed a few pics before lights out and I'll try to get a full update in this weekend.

Tomorrow will be 3 weeks of 12/12 and the girls are stacking up and starting to look frosty.

Here's a quick peak inside the tent:

That huge cola in the right-front is actually one of the Blackwater colas. We'll discuss her more on the next update! ;)

Fruit Punch cola:

It's tough to get a pic of the White Widow trichomes so the second shot is with the LED's on:

Tut #2 looks like she's gonna be the keeper with bigger colas and already getting frosty:

More coming soon!

Happy Harvests!

Looking superb krip! Them girls are getting frostayy! Hope all is well for you my friend

Thanks, Bro! And, yeah baby! :yahoo: This is when things start getting really fun! I like wacthing them put on the weight and the trichomes! :slide:

That’s wicked!! I’m excited to see my EM start transitioning now. Yesterday was day4 of 12/12 and she’s pushed out a few pistils on her budsites.

She’s progressing quickly im assuming partly because she was mature going into flower and because she’s a monster! Probably 6” of stretch in the past couple of days now! Got another week or so before it slows down so lots of tucking and tying ahead in the next week!

When you get your outer perimeter stalks going higher than the central canopy should I let those go to maximize there light exposure or bend them to keep entire canopy as flat as possible across the entire tent? I’ll get s good photo tomorrow but EM1 takes up 80% of the canopy lol

If you have powerful enough lights (HPS, MH, etc.) and you're sure you're not going to outgrow the space or burn the top colas, there's no harm in letting them go. If using LED's (as I am!) or other lower wattage lights, IMHO it's best keeping an even canopy so you can keep the lights as close to the top of the canopy as possible.

Cheers thanks bud ! I’m thinking of adding in 2X led lights beside my HPS for full spectrum lighting and the boost in resin production. So I’ll train my canopy flat ! Thanks krip man!

Right on! :high-five:

Just remember, you're pretty much (with some exceptions!) gonna have to raise your lights to accomodate the tallest cola and you just don't want THAT cola to be the ONLY cola in the tent getting quality light. ;)

Definitely ! There is 4/5 stalks around the outer perimeter of my net right now that are about 6” taller than the rest of the canopy I’ll get some of my ties and get the secured to the net better ! I’ll be able to show them in my pictures tomorrow morning when lights come on!

Thanks again eh !

Hi everybody :hugs:
I came to see if I could spot the rare NugBird in your absolutely beautiful... (weed belongs to bush or plant? ) Green Garden.
Lol for you men, out there, hope wives are not jealous when you speak about growing and how much you love your green ladies:rofl::laugh:

Looking great for 3 weeks in flower. Leafs have lush green and no bent tips. Lovely cotton ball flowers, they look to be large by their start.

Cheers

Evening Mr Krips,
a question re autos if you will. When do you start a light feeding? I'm 3 days above the soil now and want to top around day 14. I have them on the LED for now and tomorrow I'm going to MH at a slightly higher distance with fans under the hood and the reflector being ducted out. The organic pots are semi hot and most likely will not need anything right away, except some kelp extract I was planning on giving as soon as possible.
The other two are ProMix HP and will need some amount of food I would assume soon. Only assuming because they are autos. I have not grown them before so not sure what to make of the growth rate in 14 days.

Thanks for any advice brother. :Namaste:

Well, my disclaimer is that I really try NOT to grow autos but, I'd treat them like I do most all the others which is to start them on 1/4 strength nutes when they get 3-5 true nodes (not counting cotyledons). Then, as long as they stay happy, gradually increase it to full strength+. If you see any signs of tips burning, make next feeding straight H2O and back off the PPM's on the following feeding. Even with autos, different strains will react differently and some will be "heavy feeders" and able to tolerate higher PPM's.

The organic pots can likely go quite a while without needing nutes, but that depends on the size of the container and plant.

I hope that helps! ;)
