All in good things take time my friend. You plus you're family deserve the best of lives :)

What a sweet sentiment Night. Thanks.

I love this community. Every passing day you all become more like family. I think I would walk through walls for some of you. Thank you for enriching my life. I have an early appointment with vascular surgery tomorrow to get the scoop on Dale's remaining foot. Lots of positive vibes everyone. This one still has me a bit shaken.

Time to lay this tired head down for the night. :green_heart:

I went and checked it out and Oooooo does that get me excited! That's just what I'm hoping to get from mine. So much color. Have you tried a quick dry for a taste yet?

Edit: read further. Yum.

Yeah, personally I didn't like the taste too much on first try, where bud quick dry, but the buds that had a longer dry and a couple days cure I found it still needed the little cure, it's really nice now, more potent and a lot more taste! Yeah can't wait, hopefully yours are, I grew mine under the CFL too! :goodluck:

I don't use my glasses, unless I'm looking up at the light itself.
I don't believe that if you look down your eyes will have any effects (but I'm open to proof otherwise :) )

But I had ordered a pair of welding glasses (shade #3) that work for filtering out ir and uv.
Cheaper than regular sunglasses.

My brother-in-law was a welder years ago. It was what their father did and he passed that passion to Dale's younger brother. Unfortunately he took a turn in life and ended up driving bus instead. Maybe he has a pair of welding glasses I can use. Regardless, I'm looking into this. You are amazing.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Im curious why a decent pair of sunglasses is good for the eyes in the sun, but not suggested for LEDs?
Im not arc welding in my tent..
..hey, Maybe I shouldve and the cheap welds on my old tent wouldnt have gave out

If using regular sunglasses, you would want ones that filter out UV (A and B if possible) most don't filter out IR at all,
which is why I went with welding glasses.

You need them to avoid the danger of cataracts DrZiggy. Working in the light of the LED panel can cause cataracts. Not something to flirt with.

Optics and light sources is something that I have a great deal of professional experience from so this is not just stating opinion.

One should never look straight into any high powered LED irrespective of wavelength (colour), the light intensity and the small active area from these are able to cause retinal damage to your your eyes. Even most glasses provide little protection from the intense little spot of light (welders glasses should be OK though). Link to one info source among many.

Like you suspect newoldguy, the reflected light from the LEDs in the visible and NIR/IR doesn't pose any danger. The UV component, even from what is reflected however, will/may cause corneal damage called ultraviolet keratitis which is basically sunburn of the corneal epithelium. This damage does heal but prolonged repeated exposure to UV is known to be linked to cataracts as well as a host of other eye disorders.
The reflected UV intensity is so low though that any half way decent UV protecting sunglasses will do the job just fine. No lab grade protective glasses or welding glasses are needed.

Naturally the UV hazard only applies to LED grow lights that actually incorporate UV LEDs, most don't so most do not require protective glasses. The "don't stare into them directly" part does apply to all LED grow lights.

Vis vobiscum.

Thanks OMeWanCannabi

Paddy, the cfl's I was using were pretty bright so they hurt my eyes too.
(wasn't using a reflector, they were lighting under the plants and they were only 23watters but still)

Maybe OMeWanCannabi can chime in, I've heard that even regular flouros produce some UV (don't know if true or whether A or B or combo)

Edit to add: From the fda's website

What is the wavelength range of the light radiation that is emitted by CFLs?

Since CFLs are designed to provide general illumination, the majority of the light emitted by CFLs is localized to the visible region of the spectrum (approximately 400-700 nm in wavelength). In addition, typical CFLs emit a small amount of UVB (280-315 nm), UVA (315-400 nm) and infrared (> 700 nm) radiation.

Are there precautions I can take to reduce the small levels of UV from CFLs still further if I should wish to do so?

The glass used in CFLs already provides a UV filtering effect. In addition, any additional glass, or plastic, or fabric used in lighting fixtures that is between you and the CFL will further reduce the already low levels to still lower levels since these materials act as additional UV filters. Increasing the distance between you and any radiation source, including CFLs, will also reduce the small level to a lower level.

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

i put an auto under it that i threw out side to make room for seedlings because one of my plants hermied and seeded a couple of plants , the frost has half killed it , so i felt sorry for it and brought it in. the poor girl started to perk up when i put her in the poly tunnel so im given it a chance , dont think she been pollinated , ill get a picture in a mo :)

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Thank you both for the valuable information on protecting our eyes. It's so easy to get caught up in the excitement and not even think about safety. As humans we fall prey to the idea that we are somehow invincible. :laughtwo::laughtwo:

I know I plan to read all that over a few times and stamp it onto my DNA. Then I'm going to visit nivek's thread on electrical safety (Duggs, have you been there? Nivek has a link in his signature.) Our families depend on us to stay as healthy and strong as we can. I like that we look out for each other. :green_heart:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

I wear them more for safety with my bamboo stakes. I have like 2 pairs. One was expensive other was cheap like 20$. Another local grower lost an eye to a bamboo stake. And 2 years ago I was jamming one into root bound soil when my hands slipped. Bamboo stake got stuck about 1/4" deep in the roof of my mouth. I bled crazy in the bloom room. Could only eat soft food for two weeks while it healed. Could of killed my ass.

Wife wanted to call 911. Or at least take me in to ER. How was I gonna explain that one. I just flushed my mouth multiple times per day with salt water and gauzed the wound
