Stunger Tries Trough Growing And Attempts Fluxing On His Organic Living Soil Balcony

I didn't think you could find something that dark and sexy outside of Atlanta, Georgia. :circle-of-love::p you really did a hellofa job with that trough setup.
Thanks Red! I am thankfully pleased with the trough, if not it would be a PITA to disassemble.
Congratulations on the last one not standing Stung! She's a dark beauty! Can't wait to hear all about her!
Cheers Otter! I am looking forward to appraising her. :ganjamon:
Congratulations on the final harvest Stunger, and well done getting that plant through to a couple of weeks before winter! I'm sure the extra time and fortitude are going to make this harvest much different from last year's.
Thanks Shed! I am hoping for all of that, at least it should tell me something that I can use for future grows.
Level canopies take up a lot more room so I'm interested in seeing how that works in the trough next year.
Yes growing in the trough will be a little different from growing in pots.
Omg that season went sooooOooo quickly.

As always great grow stung. Thanks for the time and details shared. You are easily one of my favourite reads.
Cheers Tra, thanks for your visits!
Love ya guts and let’s do it again next year!
Thanks, I'll be doing it again this year, but for a harvest next year!

Congrats on the final harvest, Stunger 👍
She was an exotic beauty..💚
The trough served it's purpose exceptionally well, too- that was a great idea!
I'm looking forward to next year!

Thanks Carcass! A downside of having just a single container for multiple plants does mean that they're not moveable, but the increased volume of soil does wonders for maintaining moisture without the need of daily waterings. In fact I often only needed to water once every week or two.
Happy Tuesday Stunger! Looks like a pretty good harvest from your trough buddy!! Way cool!!! Smoke report later?? 😎✌️
Cheers Scottay! I managed plenty for the year ahead. As for the smoke reports, yeah nah I'm not sure yet, I'll explain in a post shortly.
Congratulations on another successful stealth patio grow. Great job as usual. I'm already looking forward to next year.
Thanks Stinker! The small height restricted balcony can still produce a decent amount, or at least meet my needs for the year ahead.

Hey folks. It's currently Winter time in the Southern Hemisphere, and that means if the Summer has gone well you get to enjoy testing out the harvest. :ganjamon:

Smoking, vaping, consuming...

Around 15 years ago I moved to vaping from combustion. For a long time I used a pure convection vape (a Silver Surfer, nice bit of kit) but more recently my daily driver has been a 3rd party Dynavap (a Simrell Vortex) which I'd heat with an induction heater, it works very well, but I think it pushes beyond convection vaping to produce a vapour that is a little bit more 'toasty'. Although it does make for great punchy clouds of vapour but when I indulge too much I feel it in the lungs. Everything has a threshold.

More new 'testers', more vaping...

So after the harvest just gone, I immediately went into the testing phase. My new testers were Frozen Black Cherry, Super Lemon Haze and a Mulanje Sherbert that had flowered 3 weeks longer than last year's 2023 Mulanje Sherbert which was my favourtite of 2023. So I was curious to compare the 2023 cured for one year that was still sticky in the jar and smells absolutely delightful, against this year's bud that flowered for 3 weeks longer than 2023, surely there would be some difference noticeable I thought.

And then a grow buddy shows up with freshly harvested bud from his grow...

With all this fresh bud from more never-tried-before new strains, I was soon experiencing many prolonged states of zootedness. And quite negatively, my lungs were beginning to feel like they were getting as gummed up, just like a vape prior to cleaning.

Decarbing...

That's when I dug out my old Ardent Nova and decided to take the pressure off my lungs and instead try decarbed bud, delivered as an edible.

I have not vaped now for 2.5 months, I have only consumed decarbed bud, it's usually chomped down with a portion of dark chocolate.

The appreciation of the bud when ingested is different from that combusted or vaped.

How do I make a smoke report when the high of the decarbed bud is felt differently and hard to separate from one another?

It is tricky to compare of the highs of decarbed bud after being used to vaping. When decarbed bud is ingested the first sense of it's effect may take upwards of an hour to appear, and by 3 hours or more later the effect can be very strong but even then the come down can last quite a few hours.

So far...

I really like the Super Lemon Haze, it has a body and head effect that is nice embracing and enhancing. It is great for day or night. My plant didn't have a strong lemon smell but there is a very slight lemon-like smell to her more airy bud, similar to the clearing sharpness of her stem rub. I had read many great experiences with SLH and it came well recommended too (cheers Emeraldo!). I find this a great strain for day or night. I sleep great with this one, and it is a lovely accompaniment to day time activities or just chilling. I need to keep a low plant and I don't think it liked the training and I only got a low amount of bud and would have loved to have got a weightier harvest of her buds. But for growing again, even though it is probable that I won't be again to get the most out of her, I am sure I want to grow her again.
A:thumb: for sure.

The Frozen Black Cherry, does indeed have a cherry or fruity like scent to her hard sticky buds. But after decarbing it smells more like ABV, nothing great. But after sitting in the jar while decarbed, its earlier fruity cherry scent become evident again. It is quite pleasant to inhale. breeder notes mentioned up to 36% THC but really, who knows, and who can define what we feel down to a THC number. I was most attracted to this for being an Indica dominant strain. As I wanted something that would be good to take in the evening to assist with a great sleep too. I get this with the FBC, a nice relaxed sleep and invariably I don't get up in the night which is great.
I can see myself growing this again. I have enjoyed this both day and night times. And I got a better return on her bud wise, so as a jar filler she's great, but without considering that my first choice would the SLH.
I have to give her a :thumb: too, she's decent and dependable.

The bud of the 2024 Mulanje Sherbert has been flowered 3 weeks longer than last year's but I can't really tell a difference when decarbed. A grow buddy finds similar when vaped. However its effect I think is the strongest. I don't find it good for sleeping but perhaps that is also down to dosage, I feel I dream too actively with it compared either SLH or FBC. To me it is probably the punchiest of the three but the SLH is up there too.
:thumb:

Decarbed...

It's different, when compared to vaping. With vaping my lungs were beginning to complain and now they aren't. So I think I am best to continue along the ingestion route and just embrace it. No one's getting any younger unfortunately. Maybe in the future I'll investigate something like a Source Turbo for making oils and concentrates.

So that's the scores on the doors at the moment

I did removed the old rotted root stumps and added some amendments to the trough that I just hand mixed them into the soil. I included some composted chicken soil, fresh worm castings, 15 Litres of Pumice as I'd like the aeration content a little bit higher. I place some bird deterrent wire as they like to make a mess picking out their favourite amendments.

Seed Making

I was able to made crosses of last year's MS with this year's SLH and FBC, regulars of course which require more time and effort to sex them before committing to growing and training them. So I would love to say I'll grow them next but I haven't yet given it thought altho I am sure they'd be great.

Next grow

However the trough is ready to take it's next grow. I think I will revert back to training with topping, LST and Supercropping and combine that with ruthless removal of weak growth. Unfortunately I am currently uncertain on whether the house needs some painting/work, because if it does that might throw a spanner in the works. :hmmmm:

Finally had my hernia repaired

I think it has been 3.5 years since it happened. But more recently it was beginning to get bigger and the time had come to stop putting it off. I choose a 'Desarda' hernia repair which doesn't use surgical mesh but it's open as it can't be done keyhole. Thankfully it is very minor and I had that done yesterday, I still feel a bit uncomfortable when making movements but it's improving and hopefully tonight I'll sleep much better. So far I never used the painkillers I was prescribed and I won't bother now, but it was good to have them as a backup.

That's me, up to date pretty much I think...

After I post this I will be hitting the sack, and will hopefully get a great sleep because I don't think I slept at all last night.

I won't immediately return back to my thread as I would like to first check out everyone else's threads and see what they are no doubt doing marvellously!

Look forward to catching up, cheers.

:Namaste:

If you're looking for alternatives, a couple of us are experimenting with Water Soluble Cannabis Powder . So far its been the most versatile of anything I've tried.

The 12/12 for first 10 days above ground seems to get them sexed at around 30 days. Not sure if we've shared that with you yet or not, but maybe that will help.

thank you for sharing. I really want to find a great vape for my Mom. When you are consuming your chocolate what is your infusion like? is it just ground up flower covered in melted chocolate or?? thanks for the info

Heya Stunger..... I took prefer to eat my cannabis. I do still vape but my go to is eating it. Lasts all day!! I'm trying to get my older brother more in to it. He's 63 and fuckin hacks a lung smoking a doob. But I'm the "little brother" 😂🤣 Yes ..... The little brother who doesn't hack up a lung!! Happy Friday!! 😎✌️🎶

Many thanks for that Azi! I have only taken a quick squizz at it but wow, that looks really interesting how the effects come on a lot quicker. Also I noticed while doing some thread wandering that some others are finding it great too. So thanks again, I'm going look into what it entails very shortly!
The 12/12 for first 10 days above ground seems to get them sexed at around 30 days. Not sure if we've shared that with you yet or not, but maybe that will help.
If I had a light and I was able to run it 12/12 and and do so safely and stealthily without our teenager catching on and without adding stress, but alas...
Great outcome Stunger! Glad to hear you got fixed and can enjoy things better now!
We do decarbed ground bud too and have recently made tincture from pressing to save our lungs. Still vaping and sometimes combusting too but everything helps! Enjoy!
Thanks Otter! I'm glad I got it done and out the way. That decarbed ground bud sounds good and was something I remember SweetSue liked too.

I had wondered with ground decarbed bud, if it makes any difference grinding it to dust when you need it or would it likely last just fine if pre-ground and stored long term as dust?
There's so much terrific information in that post that I'm going to sum up my response with "it's great to have you back on the site!"
:ciao:
Thanks very much Shed!
Hello you!

Great news all round!

And great news on the hernia 😍
Thanks Tra! Hope the pup's all good now.

Hey thanks KB! re a vape for your mother, a couple of thoughts. When you're no longer in your 20's or 30's, getting big hit vapes may not be so great as they tend to impact the lungs more. Personally, having witnessed a progression of reduced tolerance to the impact that big hits have upon my own lungs, I had decided to change my vape to a Stortz and Bickell Venty, since that was their released model. However I didn't buy one as they had a lot of early production issues and during the wait for them to sort out the issues I instead changed to ingesting decarbed bud. But if I was recommending to someone who was no longer young, I think I would look at something from Stortz & Bickell

Re eating decarbed bud, I have been simply eating the bud along with a square or two of dark chocolate. I keep it simple due to my need to not take risks with edibles in the fridge/kitchen, I just can't afford to make anything that could be inadvertently eaten by someone unintended.
Was just thinking of you too. Thanks for the update.
I love my volcano...:volcano-smiley:
Thanks Joe! I haven't had the privilege of trying a Volcano but it's another acclaimed model from S&B. I think all of their products are known for their 'medicinal quality' vapour. Funny, just when I was ready to make the move to S&B I end up going edible.
Thanks Scot! Yeah I don't exactly want to never vape again or indeed never partake in a blue moon puff of a joint again, as it's fun! But as I have made a switcharoo to eating decarbed bud over these last 2.5 months and I'd like to demonstrate my resolve for a bit longer as now my lungs feel really clear for the first time in years.

And also, the other approach mentioned above by @Azimuth is something I am keen to check out because I do miss that more instant effect felt from vaping or combustion. So if that method causes the effect to come on in 10-15 minutes that sounds good.

You have a teenager who—for months—doesn't notice an entire balcony filled with cannabis plants but would notice a light in a box over some nondescript sprouts that stays on for 12 hours a day?
The balcony is off our main bedroom, I kept the curtains drawn the entire grow whenever she was in the house and she never realised, funny and remarkable really.

Yes maybe a light kept within a box could help maintain discretion from curious eyes. Something to consider, thanks.
