Still Growing - SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Systems

Re: Still Growing - SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Sys

Very frosty indeed!
If I may ask, what latitude and elevation are you working with?

Re: Still Growing - SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Sys

We're at 45N which is very up north as far as Italy goes :cheesygrinsmiley: Mountain Spot is at around 900 m above sea level which is around 2700 feet roughly. I'm trying it for the first time cause I cannot haul water that far up but my indicas seem to enjoy it :tokin:

45N is like Salem, Oregon.
I'm at 42N and 670m elevation. Different - but not too different. Of course each area has its own influences/microclimate. We're about 120km inland from the Pacific.

Yep microclimate matters! Northern Italy is on the harsh end of Mediterranean climate with its semi alpine type, which means ours is rainier with more humidity and colder winters. Still you can find some pretty mild zones where they grow olive trees. I do what I can really to use its properties, at least winter comes late so no risk of cold snaps that could hurt the plant by the end of flowering, but then very wet October.

Rain is the bigger concern here as well. I think it unlikely we will get a frost bad enough to cause damage. It certainly could happen, but not probable. On the other hand, our wet season will be underway. Some years we get very little in October. Other years we get drenched. Our average rainfall is 3.6 cm for October. The last thing I need is 1-1/2" of rain over several week's time on some dense buds.

Best of luck on your side of this big blue & green marble.

I've always wondered how much light intensity influences potency and effect (i.e. cannabinoids and terpenes)... does Southern Italy or Southern California, for example, produce much tastier and stronger weed than Northern Italy or Northern Cali if theoretically the same grower had the same strains in the same soil and handled them in the same way? how much would be the difference?

I'm speaking out of my fanny, but I don't think it would make much difference. The growing season is longer and different strains would perform better, but a strain that does well in the north won't be more potent grown in the south. YMMV. :Namaste:

Wow Conradino, don't know how I missed the beginning of your grow, I always enjoy watching your work! Looks like this years outdoor gardens are doing great and you're not having as much trouble with the rains like last year. I may be late to the party, but consider me subscribed. Rock on!

Thx a lot! So far everything's been perfect. Hot summer, and mild September :thumb:

Outdoor there is a correlation between potency and angle of the sun which is better closer to equator, but only if we're talking landraces here. With hybrids bred and grown all over the world I don't think latitude will be of utmost importance. There are other factors to count like RH, good soil, and obviously grower's skills. But if you were to naturalize a strain grown down south to colder northern climate you'd probably see a difference in THC production by F3-F5 generation.

Hey Bangabong, you're welcome as always!

Thank you datenshi :high-five:

I've just come back from The Sunny Spot where I pruned Ultra Dogs a little bit and swept up the bushes around the plants. They're all partly knocked off by the way, it's just two plants that were closer to the male got pollinated heavily. But that's ok, it had to be done :cheesygrinsmiley: They're entering middle flowering now almost all of them, but big pheno is much slower. Judging from what's happening with flowers OG and bushy phenos will be ready between 2-5 October, but the big one might go till 2nd week. Smell is not really what I expected to be, bushy pheno with pinkish pistils smells like vanilla shake with just a little bit of cherry ice cream :tokin: And they all have this scent going, some are just weaker smelling, and some have spice on the top. Biggest surprise is Colombian though, it's not a typical pheno, also very fast flowering and producing resin in bulk. It's lemoney/piney with some hint of mandarine, I'm happy I pollinated one branch, cause that just might be what I'm looking for the future. It looks like it's gonna be quite potent bud too. No signs of bud worm damage, PM or gray mold, they take rising humidity very well :thumb:

It's amazing to see another adventure of yours once again, taking a seat to see the finish :cheesygrinsmiley: Took a long time reading till to this page.
This season I've tried what I've learned from you last year and hope I did it.
In winter I've tried indoor and it was really a nightmare.I stopped readings at the beginning of this season and tried my best to grow some regular hybrid strains outside (very risky but actually in my backyard) Very unlucky that only one girl in five plants and probably I'll harvest the first or maybe the second week of October
Feeling sorry to put my photos into your journal but I really just want to share her with you after a long break in this forum.
Thanks a lot for doing these wisely journals.

Hey man, long time no see! It's great that you're keeping it up. Even one plant is fine as long as you learn from the process. I also have a good word for you, it's not PM, it's an insect damage. You lack some calcium and magnesium, so they can't chew through the tissue, that will also add glow to your plants as metabolism will be improved :thumb:

Re: Still Growing - SoCal Hybrids & Mexican & Colombian Sativas Under Sun Natural Sys

I can see that leaves on this plant are dull, and I can see them all the time in other grows. That's what brings insects in the first place, low carbohydrates and minerals in plant's tissue.
