I dedicate this picture to you Mr. Krip.

I love it, Bro! :welldone:

Thanks, Sqwheels! The breeder is Barney's Farm and they're available from many of the seed banks, but here's a link to where you can get them from one of the 420 sponsors:

Lucy Seeds

Hi Mr.K,

Thanks for the link...I've been lost in there for the last 2+ hours

So many to choose from, and some :thedoubletake: sooo expensive, how does one ever make a choice

I've made a list of some that have been raved about here by different people that I'd like to try...someday. Here's a ??? How reliable are "FEM" seeds?

Are they really worth the extra cost?

Hi Sqwheels,

I've only dealt with nirvana. But I only buy Fem seeds. Unless I were interested in breeding, that's most likely all I would do. Don't forget that on avg if we buy 10 regular seeds 1/2 will be male which will double our cost per seed if we pull them at first signs.

So far for me I've gotten 100% female from 7 seeds that made it through germination. I went 7/10 and my bad on killing 2. In reality only 1 wouldnt take to germination. But I also took clones from the germinated seeds. I have 6 in flower, harvested 7, and have two moms and 4 clones that I recently too that I expect to grow out. I easily could have taken 50 more clones or more) as well if I wanted too.

I just received 5 master kush fems that cost me about $40. I know it seems like a lot and certainly hurts a little when we see the cost from some of the vendors. But in the end, we then know also we are not dealing with a 5th (or more) generation clone that we got elsewhere for the same or more per. And you, as many of us will clone anyways.

Where it really gets expensive I think is for the folks that want to grow a couple of every strain they see. Pretty soon they have 12 strains and couldnt ever use all the possible clones they could take or plant all the seeds they bought because they didnt have the room or whatever.

I agree 420% with Bass. The ONLY reason I would buy NON-feminized seed was if I wanted some males. And, the probable reason for that would be breeding.

There can be a lot of wasted time, energy, effort, space, and nutes put into a plant only to find out it's gonna be culled AFTER it shows sex. :)

QUICK VEG UPDATE - I WENT GLR!

Just a quick update, I switched my veg side of the cab, which also holds all the Bonsai moms, to the Gas Lantern Routine (GLR) last night.

I have to admit, I've been just about the biggest skeptic there is on this method of growing, since it goes against everything I've ever learned.

For anyone unfamilliar, the GLR replaces the typical 18/6 or 24/0 veg cycle with a cycle that involves ONLY 13 hours of total light while vegging. This is accomplished with a 12/12 flower schedule where the dark period is interrupted in the middle with an hour of light. So, it would be 12 hours light, 5.5 hours dark, 1 hour light, and 5.5 hours dark.

This one hour of light during what would normally be the dark period is enough to prevent the plants from going into flower. Remember, flowering is triggered by uninterrupted DARK - not light!

So, I did think this was a cool way to save on electric. If you can cut five hours of light out of an 18 hour schedule, that's some pretty significant electrical savings (and, presumably, easier to keep cool, so lowers cooling requirements).

But, everything I've every read says "the more light, the better". Rosenthal, Cervantes, etc. all suggest that more hours of light provide more rapid development, so I've been pretty reluctant to make the move myself, and honestly, I've been somewhat skeptical hearing some of the other growers touting a more rapid growth rate using GLR, even though they all have great grows. I just doubted the "more rapid" growth than one would get with more than 13 hours of total light in a 24 hour period.

But, now that I'm growing a SOG, there's minimal vegging and I'm just maintaining the Bonsai mom's, which don't require lots of light, so I figured I'd switch and give it a try.

Last night was the first night of GLR and, I have to admit, to my surprise there is a notable difference in ALL of the plants and clones this morning! It seems like they've all "perked" up with new growth.

It's only been one day, so we'll see how it goes, but needed to report that I am most definately impressed! :thumb:

I don't think I'll be going back to 18/6 and will be using GLR from now on and wanted to thank all the "Bro's" who popularized & proved GLR here on 420! :thanks:

Happy Harvests!

K

I love to see all the conversation...so much good info and input :thankyou:

I asked about the FEM seeds only because I've got a bunch of regulars and I chose 2 and I'm pretty sure they are both female...can you tell in veg if they are? They popped back on 12-27 so they are a month old and I can clearly see little hairs at the node points beside the leaf stems. I've already UBT'd these 2 plants, just going to veg a little longer before switching.

also, I'm so glad to see you going to GLR...I've given it a lot of thought too, but was afraid to do it for many of the reasons you gave. But have been watching others as well...I can't wait to see how your mom's and clones react. right now I run 24/0 in the veg room with 2x23w cfl's

:peace:

I'll be paying close attention to your GLR progress.

I'm happy with 18/6 in my mom/clone cabinet right now, because I'm actually fighting to keep everything warm, rather than cool. Come summer it may be a different story.

Sqwheels, if you veg a plant long enough (about 4-6 weeks) it will start showing sex in veg ("pre-flowers"), so you may very well have females showing if they popped in December.

I swithed to GLR on the current one and will never go back to 18/6. Dunno if theres any growth difference cause I cut the clones from flowering plants and they took awhile to revert back to veg but they look purty now. :thumb:

Nice!

Even if you can get the same rate of growth with GLR, the lower electric costs make it worth considering. Even with cheap electric, you're still saving somewere between 30%-48% on electric costs in veg, when compared to 18/6 or 24/0, and that's not considering the lower cooling requirements.

Good luck with your GLR experience. Been using it for about three months now, it's great.

I'm fully aware! You're one of my "inspirations" for going to GLR. Actually, I believe I MAY have first heard about it on your thread! :high-five:

I've got the GLR going now too. 'Cept I first learned it as the 12-1 method, and I can't help but still think of it that way. Like "soda" or "pop" I guess. It's what you learn first that sticks with you. Twelve probably the first here to show us how effective it can be. Skunk magazine had a great article about it last year - tips and tricks edition I think...

would something like 2 of these Shop Utilitech Digital 8-Outlet Power Strip Timer at Lowes.com

one plugged into the other work for GLR?

Bass, it would most likely be fine, but I can't tell from the link since there's not enough info.

As long as the timer is programmable in increments of 1/2 hours, or smaller, and supports a 24-hour cycle, it should work fine. Being digital, you may need to program on/off times, in which case it will need to support multiple cycles in a 24-hour period; and not just a single on time and single off time.

You can get a $15 timer a Lowes or Homies that you can connect to a plain power strip and it would do the job. You only need one timer to control all the lights.

orly? I thought the plain timers only had one on/off switch/cycle.

I use the digital type I linked above for my flower room now. But I wouldnt mind getting off 24/0 in veg.

Quick question about your Shop Utilitech Digital 8-Outlet Power Strip Timer.
I can only get one side to work...is there a secret? I would like all 8 to work. Thanks.
