SOGgy Daze Ahead For Mr. Krip!

I have 2 clones ready to transplant. Would it be good to put the in a 2L soil hempy? Or if i use soil, is it not considered a Hempy?

It's not a hempy with soil. Hempy is a form of passive hydro. Soil is...ummmm...soil! :)

Cool, would soil work in 2l with a hole 2'' up? Or would that not allow overflow out and eventually cause some problems? Or do you think I should just put them in 1 gals?

I'd ask one of the soil growers to chime in on this one, but here's my take...

I've never grown in soil, but if I had to guess, I would say to NOT use soil in a hempy container (use a bottom draining bucket, instead) since soil does not drain as well as perlite/vermiculite, I would think they would be overwatered in a hempy bucket with soil.

I would poke a few more air holes in the bottom of the 2liter, a few side holes will not hurt. Soil will not breathe the same as perlite so a res in the bottom will cause rot!
However I have ran 2liters/1 gal milk jugs with soil with no problems. They do not grow as fast as the perlite but they grow.

A WELL AEREATED SOIL would be fine, but make sure that the bottom of the hempy is perlite, this will eliminate the problem with root rot. In the Hempy style, they aren't really in the pots for long so root rot isn't much of a problem anyways, but perlite, rocks, hydroton, etc, up about a 1/4" ABOVE the hempy holes will work. This would also eliminate the need for holes in the bottom of the pot, which would eliminate the res at the bottom, therefore no longer being Hempy, but just smaller pots.

I wouldn't recommend it with soil... roots need oxygen, so with soil you need plenty of drainage, or the roots will stay waterlogged in the bottom of the container and could cause root problems/rot/disease. You could also encourage fungus gnats or other soil borne pests. Some growers actually use a "wick" to prevent a perched water table in the pot. Hempy is hydroponics, which is actually very different from growing in soil.

If you have soil questions, feel free to PM me... If I don't have an answer, I can probably get you pointed in the right direction, or recommend some soil grows to check out.

GT has much more experience than I :adore: ...and I think that would work, but now you are growing in soil with a hempy style reservoir beneath... If you are new to growing I think I might suggest going a more conventional route at first, and begin experimenting later on, once you already know what to expect from your plants, IMHO anyway.

Thanks Vape and Mr.K!!:high-five:

Also, Vape, I tried to PM you and cant bc of 50 posts. But Im having a couple problems, and would super appreciate it if you took a glance at my grow.

OK Guys....I a bit confused on things...maybe I read too much.
I plan on doing a SOG in soil. I have a number of small airpots that I'm going to use. I'm not too concerned about them, however the rest will be in 2 litter plastic bottles. I'll be using soil with perlite in them. They will have 4 drain holes at the bottom and run off will go into a tray below them. How does that sound?

That sounds fine OMM. Airpots should be a nice tool for SOG, I can't wait to see how they pan out againgst non pruning pots. In the 2l plastics, I would use hydroton or something in the bottom to help deter root rot.

Thanks GT. I will do just that!.:thumb:

Thanks to you too Mark!

2L bottles...i can't believe you would buy the soda just to get the bottle...next time your garbage truck picks up...follow him to the dumping site...:thumb:

Heh, I've been doing the same thing. Don't drink soda, so down the drain it goes. Sometimes you can find 2l generic sodas for $0.85 apiece on sale.

Does seem a funny way to get pots though. You'd think there would be some way to just buy the empty bottles, or maybe one of the hydro shops will start carrying planters with holes a few inches up, instead of at the bottom?

They have the regular soil ones with holes in the bottom for about $0.79, I don't see why these would be any tougher.

Hell, I'd pay a buck fifty to not have to take chances with scissors and drilling into a 2l bottle. Given my luck, one of these days I'm gonna have a quarter inch hole through my hand.
