Updating with another set of "pre and post feed with self-feed pots" pics , and for the record, NOT PREGNANT. I think the new little ones I was referring to were either my new pots or younger plants! One and done for me @ReservoirDog

But without further adieu...

30 hours post feed

Looks like an overachiever there in the back left corner. Looking good. :thumb:

. I am starting to like my thoughts of cutting a 6mil piece of plastic sheeting just big enough to cover the surface, with its biggest plus the ability to quickly remove it for feeding and top watering.
That's the setup the Earthbox company recommends, though that suggestion seems to have more to do with keeping excess rains from washing out your nutes in an outdoor grow. It also offers shading for the soil and can help moderate temps but all that can be done with a natural mulch.

I get feeder roots right up into that mulch layer when I keep it moist.

Been lurking for a couple of months now and wanted to introduce myself. First grow ever, using SIP's because I found some grow journals here that were having great success so thank you innovators and risk takers. I put a small GMO Cookies clone, 2nd pic, in a 5 gal SIP and it took off, I can see growth everyday.
Welcome to the Forums and especially SIP Club, @Gidorah ! Great looking plants. First time growers usually have a problem with watering, not so much for you I see. ;)

I started a Lemon Haze auto, 1st pic, from seed in a 5 gal SIP and it struggled for 2 weeks but with a little nutrient help, it is now doing well. I need to do an experiment with 2 seeds, one direct sowed in a 5 gal SIP and one in a solo cup, then transplanted into a 5 gal SIP and compare to be 100% sure. Great group, thanks to everybody!
In almost all my grows with these containers I go through a 2-3 week adjustment period where the plants look droopy and overwatered like you are experiencing but then they take off. I grow in pretty small containers so that may have something to do with it, and both Krissi and Em think transplanting up from a Solo where they can build roots first might be a better way to go to more easily get through the transition.

I'm transplanting an older, well established clone today so I'll watch carefully and see if I notice a difference but it's been a pretty consistent 2-3 week period so far for me no matter if direct seeded or transplant.

Thanks EG! I have used super soil in the past with some success. That might be the way to go. I’d love to know if @Buds

Thanks EG! That’s good to know. I wonder if @Buds Buddy uses any other nutrients. I love to figure out the right combo. His roots looked amazing!
I tried using SoHum Super Soil & Recharge on 1 plant. It did fine all through Veg, but about 4 weeks into flower the leaves got pale green & yellow. I was feeding Recharge at 5 gr. per gal. which is what the package says to use to Super Charge your grow. It says every other feeding. Did that to no avail. Tried feeding recharge every feeding for 2 weeks & still didn't help. Ended up feeding them with Mega Crop & now they are getting greener again. Organics is not my thing.
I prefer the simplicity of synthetic nutes by far. However, Geo Flora nutes might change my opinion on things. I'll be trying that on my Auto's in a few days.
@Emilya Green , does Geo Flora work in Coco ? Curious as I was thinking about doing 2 GG Auto's. 1 in FFOF & 1 in Coco for a comparison. LMK. Thanks !

Yes, you will be fine in coco.

Thanks Az. My seedling didn't appear to be droopy. It was straight with its first and second leaves parallel with the ground. However, it's leaves we're a lime green color and its growth slowed. As soon as I added GF Bloom, it took off and greened up. Could be coincidence with the 2 week establishment period. Soil mix is 3 parts FFOF, 1 part organic soil and 1 part cactus palm mix. I've read FFOF is hot in nutrients so I diluted it 3/2 and could be a factor to the potential nute deficiency.

Yay! I'm in the SIP's club!!

Oh and @Azimuth that bigger girl in the back with the vegetative plants is my Blueberry Autoflower in Pre-Flower. Thats why shes so large in comparison to the others

Figured I would come in and update my older girls again.

I am a soil based grower, FFOF. I do use plenty of soil amendments along with the use of my self-feed/water reserve pots. I top dress once a month with these same amendments that are added into each transplant: bat and seabird guano, earthworm castings, @DYNOMYCO, and now bone meal as well.

I can't say that everything these girls do is because of the pots but they sure do help with their overall health.

These particular Super Silver Crack photoperiods and Deelite autoflower are all sitting under the @Mars Hydro SP3000 so we are only using 300W to get these girls praying all the time. They are fed @Prescription Blend nutrients and received Humboldt's Flower Stacker at the start of week 2 of flower.

The health of these plants from the get go with these pots and their ability to feed on their own will has just increased with the use of the proper amendments and feed schedules.

Now at 75 Days from seed and 25 days flower, The Super Silver Cracks: Mo and Larry

Wow Krissi! Beautiful! I’m just about to start 2 autos in grobuckets. Can you tell me about how long I should expect to water from the top before they are big enough to reach the reservoir? When do you start feeding from the bottom? Thanks!

Hi Will! Thank you so much for your kind words on my lady belles!

I'm going to have to tag in a couple friends here because my self-feed pots require a top feed as opposed to a bottom feed as seen in the grobuckets.

Perhaps, @Emilya Green or @ReservoirDog or @Azimuth or @StoneOtter have answers to these questions for you. I know a little about the bottom feeding routines from reading other grows but it's not my forte and I don't want to lead you in the wrong direction. I'd rather wait to hear from the growers who actually use the bottom feed process.

Sorry I can't be of immediate help but I know your questions will be answered shortly!

I do not expect my plants to reach the reservoir. I fill the reservoir so that the wickfoot is starting to bring up moisture from the bottom and then I water from the top so that run off goes into the wickfoot from the top. This merges the two sections and from then on water will wick up to the top automatically.

Thanks Emilya! I guess I’ll probably get a better idea when I do it myself, so sorry for all the questions, but how old is the seedling when you fill the reservoir and then water from the top to merge the two? Do I have to worry about it being too much water for the seedling? Thanks for your help!

I know I'm not Em but I do know that overwatering is a #1 seedling issue, especially in these types of pots. Have you thought about starting in a smaller vessel then moving onto the grobuckets?

I have but with little success. I know others have successfully grown autos from solo cups to start but I didn’t do so well. I’m sure it’s my inexperience.
Nonsense! You don't need to use a solo either, I use these 5.5 inch pots and they can stay in there for up to 14 days or so if necessary. Is your problem upon trasnplant or when they are growing in the solo cups?

I’m not exactly sure. I grew 4 autos… different breeds and breeders. All four stunted. They’re all small. It was my second grow. My first grow I started in 3 gallons fabric pots. They did pretty well. So I’m blaming it on solo cups! Ha! But I actually don’t know if it was that. So many variables with growing.

I agree with Em in the smaller pot beginnings, I don't think it had anything to do with the solo cups.

Can I ask when they showed they were stunted and when and what you started feeding them and well, can you just jot down your basic grow environment info and feeding routine?

Maybe we can see where the fault happened since we can count out it being an issue with the banks/seeds since they were all from different origins

Can you tell me about how long I should expect to water from the top before they are big enough to reach the reservoir?
From seed it only takes a few days for it to reach the reservoir, and even less to have access to moisture since the soil above the reservoir will wick the moisture upwards. I don't grow much from seed but the last one I did I just watered once I think from the top, and right down the stem to get the tap root following the water. And even that might not be all that necessary unless you are outdoors in the wind.

The buckets are a little different from Em's storage containers and the wicking process is a mirror image. In hers (and ResDog's) the soil sits above a false floor with a connection pipe down into the reservoir, so a single column coming up into the soil above.

In the buckets, the soil drapes around the reservoir and the outside edge roots grow down the bucket sides and fully populate the reservoir level, though they root prune themselves before fully populating the reservoir itself. This may depend on pot size as Buds' roots seem to stop at the top of the reservoir level in his 5 gallon buckets. On my smaller ones they fill the entire container with the small feeder roots.

I just harvested my first 2 gallon bucket so I'll have a look at the roots from that one and see what there is to see,
