No worries 013apologies RR, big brain fart over here but I’ve got you now
yes the wick foot gets filled & packed with media seriously no loose mix here, pack it down tight for the wick foot and then homogenous loose soil mix with 40@ extra aeration above.
on that other thing- yes sir or ma’am the feeder pipe stays wide open!
thanks for bailing me out Azimuth
I'm with Nick here. The perlite reservoir at the bottom of my SWICK barely managed to transfer the moisture to the soil packed on top. Might have been too large an air gap but like he said, use soil.Perlite isn’t very good at wicking. Use soil.
Thanks for that tip Absorber!@Ramblinrose1965 dont forget to cut the bottom of the fill pipe on an angle to allow water to enter freely and some people drill a few holes in the side of the fill pipe at the air gap height to let air get to the air gap and root zone
Are you going to cut the inner bucket and flip the bottom bit upside down? Thanks for that tip Absorber!
I'm going with the bucket in a bucket design. I'm using 3 gallon food grade buckets I got for free at the local bakery. I figure this design will allow me to maximize the amount of soil in the top bucket since I am only using 3 gallon buckets.
My plan is to put a bulkhead fitting on the reservoir bucket with a clear piece of tubing to give me a way of seeing the water level in the reservoir and a means of filling the reservoir. Then instead of a single drain hole, I was going to drill 2 holes for the drain for air flow in the air gap.
Any thoughts to my madness??

This set-up holds about 7ltrs of water in the bottom and once your plant gets going it will drink 6 -7 ltrs a day emptying reservoir so don't skimp on it
Im not sure what a bulkhead fitting is

All you really needHeres a bulhead fitting but I will not be using one with a spigot but rather one with 3/4 inch garden hose threads on the outside of the reservoir bucket. Then I will attach some clear tubing with a hose clamp and secure the tubing to the top of the bucket. Thats my plan anyway. Pvc bulkhead fittings should be here today.
I sure hope so. Thank YouShould work great!
