I'd say go for it. Yeah, they drink like crazy in SIPs.If plants had a tachometer for their metabolism, we'd be seeing it absolutely pinned into the red zone and never let up. All the extra growth, biomass, comes from - all that extra water.

That's an important observation for sure. @InTheShed , can plants like cannabis put significant amounts of P and K 'in the bank', I mean building a reserve during veg for later use in flower? I mean not just a little, but strategic P and K reserves. I've heard this in passing but have no real information.

Agree w/ Shed.

The only outdoor SIPs I have this year are for veggies. Updated pics below. There's a couple of my 27gal totes in there, but most are the bucket-shaped SIPs. They are 35-40 gallon Rubbermaid trashcans. They have the upside-down bucket reservoir design inside, made from 10-gallon nursery pots, drilled with 7/32-size holes. A 3/4" irrigation pipe hose goes down to rez. I fill them from 6-gallon carboys with battery-powered pump attached. Reservoir holds about 9 gallon. Works swish, I don't have to water for two weeks, even though they are out in direct, day-long sun. I use weeds from my backyard pond as mulch, and just keep piling on a new layer whenever I have to clean up the pond, which is often this time of year. Weeds are mainly a horsetail cousin that contains lots of silica. I use MegaCrop, Sweet Candy, Humic acid and kelp for everything, cannabis, cucumbers, tomatoes, pumpkins!

Love the pink bike, for one minute there I thought you were walking down thru Kensington market in Toronto. If you been there you would know what I mean.

Nice looking garden dude, haven’t seen you around much. How’s the cannabis going?

Btw there is a seed collective up and running (underground of course), which to an extent you are part of since last year remember? Seeds ?

It’s a legit thing now, and I needed to run by you some copyright thing on the name you suggested last year and I end up taking it and using it; I am obviously talking about Duterte’s Nightmare (name). I want to know if I can use it and own it for a certain genetics I have and intend to make public in the short future. I wanted to openly ask you;

Can I use this name and all the copyright ©️ that comes with that?

Or should I drop it now and make a new name before it’s too late?

Thanks a bunch,
Daniel here

I'm honoured D, please, you have my agreement and authority! F%$^ that asshat Duterte. He ever comes sniffing around for a cut you tell him I have it with me, on my person, and I'm waiting to pay him. Note the result on my gravestone as my personal contribution to democracy, transparency and good old-fashioned comeuppance. Pricl{.

I promise to catch you up with the 'seeds' the very moment I get just a teeny bit more caught up myself. I'm up against it at the moment, on all fronts, and not making much of a contribution at the moment. Chuffed to hear about the progress on your baby though, I hope she grows strong and true. I wont forget my commitment to get back in touch, I promise.

edit: PS thanks for the compliment on my Canadian Folk Art; yes, of course, I've been to Kensington. But have you watched, "King of Kensington"? I used to love that show... best to you and Yours, Dani. -RD

hHey there guys & gals, How's it growin'? Really, the pics I've looked at speak for themselves. Some really nice grows going on. I've just been working & chilling these past couple of months so had nothing growing during that time. Had a lot of misc. stuff to do anyway. Sold a car, bought a truck & motorcycle. Weeded a 1/4 acre, built a porch & laid rock. Stuff like that has kept me busy.
Anyway, 13 days ago I decided to drop some seeds. So I do have a grow going at this time. I'm not going to journal it. I'm just burnt out on journals; for now at least. All the resizing & cleaning the pics up just takes too long for a mediocre computer guy like me.... lol. I thought I'd just update with some pics every couple of weeks in this thread to show what's going on. So here are some details of my grow.

4x4 Castle Greens Tent
Viparspectra KS500 LED Grow Light
4 - 5 Gallon SIP's with 1 gallon starter pots inserted. (Res is empty)
6 gal. Humidifier
6" Exhaust
6" Intake
Temp / Humidity Monitor
Strains: Banana Pudding / Forbidden Fruit / Kush Mints / Apple Betty

I dropped all 4 seeds on the 17th so 3 out of 4 are 13 days old. Apple Betty gave me problems. Took almost a week to sprout & then runted out. The other 3 took 4 days to pop their heads up & have done fine since.
I removed the runted Apple Betty & dropped another bean. Took 5 days to sprout & this one looks runted too )To me at least). I don't have time to start another seed as it would be too far behind the other 3 so just letting it grow.
I'm not planning on growing these all that big since there are 4 plants in a 4x4. Once the plants have 4 nodes I plan to Top Water / Feed the Soil in the SIP's. At 5 nodes I'll up-pot from the 1 gallons to the SIP's. Once I see about 3 sets of alternating branches I'll flip to Flower.
For this grow I'm using Mega Crop, Nitrogen & Silica. I'm using FFOF soil with about 30% Perlite added along with Dinamyco.
I'm going to try doing this grow without pH-ing. Let's see how true the statement "You don't have to pH in soil" actually is. I'm personally a Non-Believer in that statement so I have to see for myself.

So here a some pics of what I've got growing so far. Enjoy.... :passitleft::passitleft::passitleft:

Day 60ish on the two grand daddy's. One of the plants is in far better shape and drinking from the reservoir at about a half gallon a day. The other one has some kind of deficiency that has slowed her drinking down a lot. I hadn't top dressed at all until today (threw some Gaia green power bloom in both preparing for flip next week). I broke down and got some liquid nutes to try and correct the deficiency quick before flower. Threw some light feedings of fox farms grow big in over the last 4 fills (every other fill) and she looks to be greener overall but still quite a bit of chlorosis between the veins and weird purplish splotches spreading from the tips around the edges. The plant on the right is going gang busters and while it had a couple leaves go yellow, mostly looks healthy and drinking strong. Both plants have gotten the exact same treatment and medium from the get go, weird.

Curious - what is the PH of your water, and do you add CalMag?

Curious - what is the PH of your water, and do you add CalMag?
I ph my water going in at 6.3 (runoff today from top feeding was 6.38 from that plant and went in at 6.3). I've read countless times that you don't ph in soil, but my water comes out the tap at 7.8 and had all kinds of trouble in my last grow. I just recently started adding calmag! Good call-out on that one. I'm adding ~1/2 tsp per gallon, and I've filled with that solution and the nutes twice so far.

^ ^ ^ this really peaked my interest…. I‘m still newbie and have zero to offer other than 2 cents anywho feel as if a new old training theory is dropping itself into my lap. Sink or source? Both!

The short version is leave a handful of lower limbs intact, tease them out as if building colas but snipping only the growth tips so those limbs put zero strain on the plant. All those extra fans just sitting there fat & happy…extra source - but no sink.

my last wedding cake didn’t fade a leaf all the way thru…. she had 16 colas up top and down under there were 7 lower limbs chock full of fan leaves but no growth tips. I did absolutely zero defol other than remove the lower growth tips.

just a hunch with nothing more to back me up

Interesting.
Last year I had several plants expressly tell me they did not like the calmag thank you very much. So I discontinued it. Weird only one of yours shows distress. Perhaps that plant does not like it either?

Good to see you Buds. Yer growing 4 out of my personal top ten (contemporary) fave strains!
I have some Kush mints germing right now and some Forbidden Fruit crossed with Kryptonite. Don't be a stranger, this thread is perfect for lazy posters, hell, I just posted my pics of my 35 gal veggie SIPs! lol.

Nice to see you back Buds! I think you'll find no PHing a real pleasure!

I really enjoy olde-timey science vids for various nerdy reasons and thought SIPpers and SWICKers might also. , The first I watched first and like the best for aesthetic reasons. The second was inspired by the Washinghton Sate Original is essentially a modern version. Demonstrations of against-gravity water travel are demonstrated in various soil types and give a solid grounding in the topic. I thought some might enjoy the luvly, relaxing geek-out sesh they provide- esp. the 1959 original.

love to you all - RD

Also, would it be possible to start building a list of those SIPpers who regularly fertigate (vs. irrigate) via mixing fertilizers into the reservoir? (or once did for a significant amount of time)

I'd like to do the same for SIPpers using time-released (non-organic) ferts in the soil matrix, like Grow Dots and Osmocoat.

Maybe if you read this and you fit one of these categories you could DM me with a brief description of fert types, and anything you feel is relevant. Soil type, water type, maybe note if you specialize in rare or classic Sativas. I realize we all make changes constantly and arent always chasing 'best weed ever' experiences, but a short list of some things basic in nature, will help me organize the list and when the time comes, choose which people to contact, whatever my issue may be.

Perhaps we could create a public directory of sorts, for SIP growers that would helpfully indicate where certain expertise/knowledge may lie in order to facilitate digging it up when speed is of the essence.

Happy to take any feedback. I'm merely compiling a list of SIP and SIP adjacent-type growers and trying to come up with an organizational structure for them. I'd be happy to share as a 420 Forum reference material if I get good feedback.

This is friggin golden it’s like my go to google search every day haha addictions to finding feeds n diary’s that complete n finding their foods lol my last few questions have been what feed you using

Here's a quick update on my first time SIP grow. Sensi Cheese in an Earthbox container that holds approx 15 gallons of FFOF soil.
With the warmer weather now (90F), the plant is drinking about 1.5 gallons per day! I feed it every time the reservoir gets filled. Currently using Prescription Blend nutrients, but I'm just about out of them, and they've gone away (too bad because it was a great product). When that is out, I'll switch over to another liquid blend from Emerald Harvest. I'm also adding about 10 mL of Terpinator to each gallon as well.

I have another Earthbox that I'm growing 2 tomato plants in. It too, seems to be drinking about 1.5 gallons of water each day.
20230701_065349.jpg

I have it hooked up to my vegetable garden automatic watering system. It comes on every other day and fills the res to overflow. If I didn't have the rest of my garden to worry about, I'd set the system to water every day, but that wouldn't be good for the other plants.

I'm going by the manufacturer recommendation on this setup regarding feeding. They recommend putting 1 lb. of all-purpose fertilizer (7-7-7) in a trough along the top of the planter about 2 inches below the surface. Just one time feeding for the entire growing season. Seems a little strange, but those plants are looking super happy.
