Second Outdoor Desert Autoflower In Arizona

Whenever you blend your own soil make sure there is some form of lime in it.
This was an existing bed that I’ve been growing veggies in. Would I still add lime? Everyone in the local garden groups uses sulfur instead of lime out here due to our high ph/alkalinity soil and water. It is mostly raised bed mix but in the past had tilled it in and mixed some of the native soil with it.
Are you asking a grower whose perpetual is 1252 pages?
Hahahahaha!!
you have a point there. I will close my other journal and update everything in this one.

I will also be using our well water with this one because I likely won’t be able to collect enough rain water to run this grow through the whole summer. If this summer “Nonsoons” are like last years that is.

Sulfur lowers the pH of the soil rather than buffering it generally, but if it's been getting high alkaline water that might be a good thing.

I would start by digging down 6" and running a slurry test with distilled water so you know what you're working with before amending.

The basic instructions for a slurry test are:
Take soil from about 6" down and add an equivalent amount of distilled water as grams of soil (10 grams of soil, add 10ml water). If that doesn't make a slurry, use enough to make a stirrable thick slurry.

Stir it up, wait 15 minutes, stir again. Do that for at least an hour, longer is better, and then put your calibrated pH stick in the water. That's the pH of your medium.

That’s a great idea Shed! I haven’t used sulfur in it for awhile so will be curious to see what the current ph is.

So I recalibrated my PH meter and tested my soil slurry after an hour and a half of soaking and stirring. So given a soil PH reading of 7.9 and a water PH reading of 8.0, along with yet untested but presumed high alkalinity I’m thinking I need to do something. I’m going to test another spot just to be sure, it’ll be about an hour. I’ll report back if I get signify different results. Btw I tested my citrus tree soil when I got my new PH meter. It had been previously ammended with Tiger 90CR sulfur and was at PH of 7.

Thank you!! My first plant I started outdoors on Dec 2nd! Growing thru the winter is one of the advantages of southern Arizona. Come ask me about the disadvantages come July/August, lol!!!
I used to live in Tucson! The sun grew my first plant without me even messing with it one time! Lol. I planted a seed in my dad’s backyard and moved out. It was by a tree he just planted that had a dip system running to it. Well she grew! Ha ha

Yeah definitely no lack of sun out here! That’s crazy that it grew without any help. Did it produce anything?

It was probably about six foot tall and had two colas. It didn’t yield much cuz I had to chop it earlier than you should. But it probably dried up to a quarter bag if that. Maybe 5 grams... it was really pretty tho! It was from a bag of juicy fruit that was from Cali. It was some fire that I got a lot of cheap cuz it had a few seeds in it. Probably like 15-20 in an oz. it smelled just like the gum and tasted nice and sweet.

That’s awesome! Nice to be able to just walk away and have it produce some thing LOL

When you use the Holly tone how often do you plan to add additional top dress after mixing in the initial soil amendment?
It would be Palm-tone, not Holly -tone. I didn’t use Palm-tone this time as I already had some 4-1-6 palm fertilizer on hand. I don’t plan on doing any more top dressing. I plan on using just Mega Crop (MC) from here on out unless I run into any sort of problems.

And what would you use in flower?
I would use the same stuff. I use just MC throughout the whole grow, I just use a different amount since you dose it by weight. The NPK ratio doesn’t change throughout the grow. The only time the ratio is different is you are adding something like CalMag that has any NPK or other stuff in it.

was really wanting something that had feeding charts I could follow like the cannabis specific nutes do.
I don’t see any reason you couldn’t use the GeoFlora nutes schedule. The N & K aren’t that much different. The main difference would be the lower P, which IMHO, is a good thing. If you look at both the GF specs compared to the Espoma, they have a lot of the same trace element in almost the same percentages. They use some of the same stuff like alfalfa meal, feather meal, bone meal, etc. Heck even the beneficial bacteria are the same. What do you think Shed?

After seeing the results of your slurry test, I think that is probably good advice. Your soil is in a desert environment. Mine is in a humid, subtropical climate. I thinks Shed is in a Mediterranean climate. So our soils have different needs.

a water PH reading of 8.0
Just to be clear, you ran the slurry test with distilled, and the 8.0 is your tap water, yes?

If so, 7.9 for your soil is definitely high! No wonder folks are adding sulfur between grows.

Even 7 would be high as a start. I'd try to get it to 6.2-6.5 since it's only going up as you go.

I haven't done any research on Espoma but I can't see any reason not to go with Geoflora once you get the pH to settle where you want it. The key seems to be to make sure it's in there before you plant!

I don’t know where I got Holly lol
The NPK ratio doesn’t change throughout the grow.
I guess I just assumed that the ratios would change because, for example the general Hydro schedule I follow has me changing the amounts of the nutrients.

Yes, and yes.

This meme just came up in one of my gardening group and I thought it was quite funny and appropriate to the current situation LOL

Maybe I should just scrap the whole idea of growing in my garden bed, and grow in pots in Sunshine mix. Or plunge the pots in my garden bed. And hope for lots of rain so I can fill up my rain barrels

Maybe do some of each. That way it would be kind of a science project and you could find out which works out better for you.

I like pots cuz you can move them if you need to. But the plant can get huge if you stick it in the ground. Yeah I agree with dude. Do a few each. Experiment.

Maybe do some of each.
I think I might do that! I added sulfur to my bed this morning, raked and watered it in, I’ll check in a couple weeks and see what it looks like. I plan on up potting a couple times so won’t go on the ground for a bit yet anyways.

Me too!

If wanted to be really daring and live dangerously, half of the ones you plant in your beds you could feed with dry nutes and top dressings; and the other half you could use Mega Crop. Then you could see which method you like best. You could do the same thing in pots too.

I’ve been meaning to ask, how deep is your well? I use well water also. Mine is down around 120’ or so. The water pH is 7.4 and the total alkalinity usually tests to between 120-140 ppm.
