+reps >9000! I loved the video. You are showing what can be done really cheaply. What temperature are you running? How was the flavor?

Hey guys. I've been doing some work at a place that deals with a ton of steel and aluminum, they have a ton of pieces of it all around the compound. Do you think this would be usable? There are pieces that are like 4x6 and about 1/2 inch thick steel, pretty polished but could be polished much more, aluminum pieces like this as well. I'm thinking about asking them for two pieces but don't want to if it's not even worth it...
It's totally worth it. You would just need to drill some holes for your heating elements. I recommend the 60w blue adjustable temp soldering irons you can find on the bay for 10 bucks. The last thing you would need is a method of attaching the top plate to the press you will use.

So as exciting as making a $300 press might be, there's a big jump between that and the 50 hmk quik clamp version.. Or something like what Billy has rigged up.
If I have a lot of pressable material is it going to take forever to run through the diy version? Like at what point is it worth it to upgrade to a nicer press?
Really the difference in my 260 dollar press and a better one is the press itself. I am pretty stoked with my ongoing results. At some point I will get a hand pump hydraulic press and that will make mine perfect for 1 gram Nug or kief pressing. I usually press 1 gram now and the quality at 220F or less is amazing. Yield is tip top as well. My primary reason for upgrading would be ease of use. Much easier to pump than to hang all my weight on the operating lever. But first I will just get a long pipe for more torque. My bud chips after pressing are dry so I think I am doing well at 16-22% yield from dry buds (62% Boveda packed). At some point I may get some larger plates but my solution for quantity is to make dry ice hash and then press the hash. A press with 3"x3" plates would run 600 plus.

cool, I'll ask them tomorrow then! I'm going to try and find a used 12-ton press so I can really crank down on some buds, haha. Appreciate the help, shiggs.

I'm looking at the high 5 press.. Looks like a manual lever arm though, yours just as good?

Thanks for sharing your field work pal! :nicethread:

I have learned that dry ice Keif doesn't press out as well as the dry sift I get out of my tumbler.
The tumbler in the first 5 mins of low speed tumbling yields me 12-15 grams of what is something like wet sand crossed between oatmeal cookie dough. The 6 star sizzles a lot sooner
The arbor presses arm compacts on its own more and the yield was 15% more generous. 50% compared to 65%.
The dry ice isn't bad by any means but it's just not as good and doesn't yield quite as high.

I'll try my best to remember to get pics of both.
Right now I'm medicated on the 5 star and it's really nice
The six star is "mad man!!"

"I'll take the mad man!"

The high5 press is going to be equivalent to the press I have. If I didn't DIY I would have bought the high5. Looks like quality to me and just 100 bucks more than my press. Plus you can use it as an email if you buy a coil for it.

My buddy has a tumbler so I will try it out with this latest batch of sugar leaf. Thanks HizzyB. What is 5 star and 6 star?

okay guys, I picked up two 3x6 aluminum plates from the place I was doing work at, they are about 1/2 inch thick as well. Looks like high quality stuff, nice and shiny already but I'll obviously polish these more. I'm wondering how I can mount these onto an arbor press or 6/12 ton press. Do you think maybe screwing them to wood blocks then mounting the blocks onto the press would be better? I'm not the most handy of people when it comes to this stuff, not going to lie.

If you work in machining at all, you should be able to drill some fastening holes in your plates and then nut and bolt them to the press.

It you don't work on machining look for a drill press to borrow for a minute or two. Aluminum is really soft and most high speed steel bits should cut into it.

Don't use wood. A 12 ton press will eat wood immediately.
Most presses come with a set of arbor plates. It won't be very convenient, but for testing, you shouldn't need to attach the plates to anything.
I'd come up with something to reinforce the top piece of aluminum and will clamp onto the press' arbor (maybe use another piece of the aluminum?). That could screw to the top aluminum plate, both strengthening it and holding it in place. I'd just let the bottom aluminum plate rest on one of the arbor plates.

I may actually just go with a 6-ton A-frame press. I did grab two thinner oval shaped pieces of aluminum, maybe I can use those somehow as well. Just have to figure out a way to secure the plates to it, brainstorming ideas while dabbing. :D

Good question
I will have to find the specifics and post

Might only apply to ice water hash I'm not sure

Re: pics later

BD nug squish. Grown in Doc Bud's kit and triple washed per usual.

First with glove on or in a piece of parchment, I hand press nug or a few nugs into a puck about the size of 3 stacked quarters.

2 pieces of raw parchment above and below nug, basically i cut a long rectangle and fold it 2x to make a square with double thick top and bottom.

196f, squish lightly to let puck absorb temp before full pressure. Then squish till the press bottoms out, I don't have a guage, but I do have a 30ton frame with a 20ton bottlejack. As it takes about 20-30 seconds to fully squish the nug, I basically release it as soon as it bottoms out, I dont leave it set there for more than a sec or 2.

I'd love to know if there are better ideas for timing and temps. Buds are not quite fully dried (close tho, they are not wet), I think a bit of moisture maybe key in evacuating the oil quickly from all the plant material, as I have heard good things about boveda'd nugs in the press. Seems like with kief or dry sift u want to stay all dry though.

:drool::drool:

I want to make rosin so bad! Thanks for all the great pictures to drool over everyone!

Would anyone care to discuss the pros and cons of the various prebuilt rosin press models available now or even early next year? I'm looking for suggestions for personal use only. If anything semi portable is available that would be lovely. I'd hate to have to explain to anyone why I have a large press bolted to a table somewhere in my home. Maybe I can lie and say it's to press my cross-stitch work flat. Like REAL flat. :laughtwo:

:thanks: for this thread!

With harvest imminent, I'm going to jump in. I'll be back once I've slapped a DIY press together and have something to show.
