Rosin Press: Information Thread

I have a table vice. One of those things Dale left me.

I kept it in hopes of somehow being able to use it for this purpose, but I haven't been successful. I haven't tried again since you all started focusing in on it either. One of these days I'll reread these pages and see if I can get pointers on making that work.

It's not every woman has a bench vice in her kitchen. :laughtwo:
Sue,
I have several vices, but none of them are in or involve the kitchen! Oh wait ... sorry ... wrong kind of vice ... Never Mind!

Hey all. Just a little idea for those with personal sized presses! Sometimes the rosin you get is super sappy from all the delicious terpenes. It becomes a real pain to get off of the paper. Some folks put it in the freezer but then it gets brittle and some could fly away. My solution is to take two cans of soda and keep them in front of my air conditioner. That way they are cold but not enough for condensation. I wrap a parchment sheet with fresh rosin around a can and it comes off much more easily on the dab tool. Then I switch cans for the next sheet, always keeping one can in front of the AC. This is some very fresh Bluniverse rosin wrapped around a can.

How sappy was it? Well here is a pic after using this method to get it off the parchment. It flows slowly but surely! And it was delicious as heck!

I am curious, is anything good remaining in the waste? I read about someone using the remains for edibles but how much of the good stuff is left in your plant pancake? This still owns any other type of extraction using solvents. It also looks golden and sexy!

I bet that tasted delicious. I'll be making a rosin press this winter.
Please come to me when you do. I will know more about it by that time and can give some advice. I'm excited that you want to make a press and join the revolution!

I have been saving the chips left over. My plan is to combine the reclaim from my dab rig and the post press bud chips for coconut oil. From what I hear the post press chips are more for relaxation and sedation. So perhaps a few capsules or a dessert before sleeping. But yes even if you try to extract it all some will soak back into the bud chip. The more pressure you use the less potent the chips will be but some of it will stay there. They get a nice toastiness to them also!
Some of my rosin is darker, usually from cured buds. But the taste and strength are awesome. Someone commented today that the Bluniverse rosin tasted like BHO live resin. When I pressed the two week old Bluniverse it was sappy but turned to budder overnight like some live resin does. I love this press. Best DIY results ever. I wish I had the ability to invite everyone from the forum to taste it. It is like vaping fresh bud but 3x as intense! I truly get higher with rosin than anything I have tried in the past.

OMG!! I just discovered this!! Guggle "dab art"!!! Here's an example ... :thedoubletake:

... that'd be a fun and worthy monthly contest, no? :hmmmm: ...

Holy crap! :cheesygrinsmiley: :circle-of-love:

So I have some question and theory to throw at u guys, very very close to doing some pressing, almost all things have been figured out and ordered, just have to grab a few more things locally.

I'm using a 20ton press with dry sift, planning to use 25micron mash bags.

My questions are mostly about the filter bags, parchment and ptfe:

-how do you or would you manage this part of the process?

-I've seen some posts/pics around the web where the product soaked/pressed into the parchment, i'm sure they were too hot too long, but still, we wanna avoid that kinda thing for sure.

-anyone used 25u silkscreen? is this nylon? is it actual silk? I feel confident about using my first set of bags but it seems like the market is all nylon/poly, while getting into something like silk or even coffee filters seems a good idea

-i've seen ppl make bags with coffee filter+paper crimper, seems a great idea but not sure if possible with alot of pressure

-whats the technique for folding the open end of a full 25u filter bag, i'm gonna sew my own, wondering how much extra I need on the ends or if there is a good trick anyone has for this

-skip parchment and use ptfe?

-have heard of a tech where u cut ptfe the size of your plates and then put that between the bag and the parchment, then all your product ends up on the outside of the plates, seems good

I'm excited to hear of any tech tips anybody has, hesitant to share mine as they are as yet unproven, but the research and equipment is there, stay tuned!

couple of my ideas:

*most of my available product is trim

-dry sifting using 5 gallon buckets with diesel screens atop a vibratory tumbler

-placing entire sifter setup in a coffin freezer

-freezing product ahead of time

Look forward to sharing some shots with you guys in the next week or so, thoughts? caveats?

BK,
You may want to pickup some oversized rolling papers and a roller. I have had good luck with making fat joints from kief and pressing them. They are a cheaper way to get the hang of the process. I have never had one blow out, knock wood. You can make them about any size. Then you can try full bags.

I want to try the tea bags. Coffee filters are something I want to try as well.

Best.

I had poor luck with the cookina PTFE sheet but I have heard good things and read good things on the oil slick PTFE that looks like parchment paper. I haven't had issues with parchment paper itself. I just make sure to chill the parchment before trying to get the rosin off. I wrap the parchment around a cold soda can and use a rounded dab tool to remove it.

I have used natural coffee filters for kief with good success. You just have to realize it is a weak paper product so go easy on the pressure so you don't blow out the coffee filter. Then press the coffee filter a second time to get as much of the remaining rosin out. Silkscreen is nylon but we are going low temp so it should be fine. I used some silkscreen and folded the edge under the packet then pressed slowly until I was sure the pack wasn't going to blow.

Yea my idea is to use as much of 20tons of pressure as possible allowing lowest temps possible. Imagine this makes an impact on the filter. Love the idea of using coffee filter though for sure, may have to try anyway, saw a little guide to unfolding them and using a paper crimper u can make ur own little bags.

I'm really liking the 37u bags
Pressed
This out of five grams
Of high end dry sift

Well hot damn!!! I gotta start saving my money up. :laughtwo: Maybe I need to find a sugar daddy. Lol!

Ooo... Find that little guide or make some yourself and document it for us. This sounds neat!

I use some ptfe that's green
Got 150' off of a guy on the big auction site for like 75 bucks
Works great and I use it until first flip and then it's onto good store brand parchment like glad or something
