Rosin Press: Information Thread

Major........ Brilliant documentation. Don't bother apologizing for the pics, it's a temporary set-up on it's way to better.

Let me alert a friend so he can follow along. :hugs:

+Reps...... Of course. :kisstwo:

Thanks gang!
If anyone is unfamiliar with, or needs help with a PID, I'd be glad to offer more info and/or assistance.

Major I am so freakin stoked! Your PID controller is spot on, the press and plates are beautiful. It warms my heart to see you about to enjoy the fruits of your labor in this way. I am now using a 6 ton shop press so you using a 12 ton and larger plates should come out to about the same pressure because my plates are about half the size as yours.

So pressure determines temp needed and I must say I have been getting fantastic results around 210. For me on the soldering irons that's 300. Always check your set up with a meat thermometer if you don't have precise control but with a PID setup you should be spot on. For the rest of us a Meat thermometer or K type thermocouple can be an asset to check the plate temps. I am going to follow your PID setup info so I can get a larger set.

For bud I am finding the garlic press to make pucks about the size of a quarter and my 2" circular plates are perfect for personal pressing. Yield is higher with small plates and extended presses are possible because the puck squishes to almost the edges and all the rosin moves away from the heat. So I do squishes at 210F for about 15seconds. 2nd squish unnecessary but can get you a bit more. I now use one extra piece of parchment paper as the outside sheet. 2 layers prevents the rosin from getting through at high pressure and fouling the plates. I am going to try the Oil Slick paper that looks like parchment. It is supposed to be better at preventing bleeding. 210 can be sappy so if needed I chill the rosin down by wrapping the paper around a cold soda can. Then I have been using a titanium paper clip to get it off the sheet. When you use the cold soda can you can just rub the clip against the sheet and it picks the rosin right up. Eventually it gets to be too much on the clip and I take a silicone dab container and wrap the edge around the clip and use the container to pull off the rosin right to the dab container! Works great. The titanium paper clip is also the best dabbing tool I have found. You can get them for about 3 bucks on the Zon. I will post a video of Shiggity's soda can method later. Yield has been 16-22% with the arbor press. Haven't tested the 6 ton yet.

For Kief pressing I had great results with 175F and a natural coffee filter. I made a lil packet and folded the edges under then put it in parchment. You have to barely press at first or the pouch will blow. The rosin just runs right out. Then slowly add pressure and you will get copious returns (50%+). So I want to get larger plates just for kief pressing. 2" x 3" would be ideal for me but if I can only find 3" x 3" I will get that. Then I could cut silkscreen and make my own pouches just under that size for kief.

This has been a great adventure so far. I have a 1 Qt Mason jar filled with pressed pucks. That is a hell of a lot of dabs made and taken! Gonna make Canna coconut oil out of them so nothing is wasted! Sue would probably add a little kosher salt and eat them like potato chips. They have a smell in between fresh and decarbed bud, and have a chewy/herby/nutty quality when muncher on. (I tried them for Science). I am sure they aren't fully decarbed but I think there are many benefits to non fully decarbed herb or People wouldn't be juicing cannabis. Of course one could decarbed the chips in the oven and then they would be quite crispy.

I mentioned the garlic press in the first part. I got a great one on the Zon which is all stainless with a removable chamber. I put ptfe sheet over the holes and on top of the bud and squish it down. (About .5-.75g) then I press it down with good hand pressure. To get the puck out I poke a lil Allen wrench up through the holes. The ptfe sheet I have is from BBQing so it is tough and the Allen wrench won't poke through. I will include that in the video as well. But the point is that pre pressing makes the final puck uniform and smaller in diameter. If you don't pre press you get some rough edges which are thinner and can wick up oil leaving you with a dry puck, wet edges, and a lower yield/need to re-press.

Hope this info helps! Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks Shiggity, and thank you for this thread!
I need a lot of work on my technique.
I pressed a kief puck and got about 50% out of it on my first try, but it was contaminated by a little plant material because I did NOT use a filter. Yesterday I tried the natural coffee filter method. I could see lots of resin on the paper, but it stayed there - almost nothing on the parchment. What am I doing wrong? Any ideas?
I've been heating the plates in the oven and then using a heat gun to keep the temp up where I want it. It sucks so I'm going to wait on further tests until I get the heaters installed.

What temp on the kief pressing Major? And how much kief did you put in?

For the coffee filter test, I started with 0.54 gram of kief. I pressed it at about 225F.

lol rosin pressing still a thing ?

I wonder how many grams of delicious primo kief was destroyed in the process of this epic experiment.

Heat activates and reduces the shelf life of THC/CBD.

So if you're going to do this ... activity ... don't make more than you can consume for the day..

vlad what do you suggest as an alternative? :)

I did not mean to come off as flaming the good people's time and research here ...

Rosin is fine for day to day consumption but my personal favorite which requires more time is potable alcohol based extracts which involve putting the Kief into a sealed jar with a proportionate amount of high proof potable alcohol, %80 purity and up.

That method on its own requires a time for the alcohol and kief to sit in darkness a couple of weeks so I understand not everyone has the time. I don't use heat because it causes the "activation" of the principle ingredients that we cherish and I like to store up large quantities for future use.

Tincture is a product that will hold potency indefinitely if stored properly. But I know also, we live in a world where everyone has access to a curling iron but no good pure alcohol because of :cough: stifling government

So don't mind me ... Just passing through before World War 3 is here to interrupt the show.

Cheers :bongrip:

No worries, comrade! :high-five:
I don't view it as a "waste". Obviously, for maximum potency, nothing beats whole flowers. No matter how you extract, you never get 100% of the goodie out of the material you begin with. On the other hand, with whole herb, you end up consuming a bunch of plant material that has no benefit, or even a negative impact. IMO, if a grower has more bud and kief than they need, rosin is just another selection in the medicine cabinet. It also is another way to use up popcorn and stuff you wouldn't want to bother with.
Pressing can be quick and easy, filtering out most of the crud you DON'T want and offers a different high and flavor profile. I'm still a hash/kief smoker, but this is a nice alternative.

Lol Vlad to each his own man. I respect you except for meddling in American politics lmao!
I do find that my rosin keeps well for me but I do not press huge amounts. I press an with in 0.5-0.75gm amounts and come out somewhere in the neighborhood of a gram.
You
Rosin is just as stable as BHO extracts but much safer and with no solvents. I have used ethanol extractions in the past but don't like the heavy chlorophyll that comes with a long extraction. Even highly pure kief has some fine plant matter in it which means yucky chlorophyll taste. But I do agree that small amounts is best to make at once. I press 1-2 times per week so nothing stays around long enough for me to test degradation. But it is the first concentrate I have used that I don't get a funny solvent taste to it. It tastes like the bud smells, just concentrated and delicious. And rosin from kief is quite a bit more delicious than the kief itself.

For me it is the icing on the cake. I love it. Still love joints but a dab or two or three is some amazing stuff. Plus there is no waiting involved. And you must admit a 6 ton press at lower temps is a much better method than just a hair straightener. Good equipment, good technique equals good results.

I'm looking forward to the video when you get it all worked out. I get goosebumps just reading it. :laughtwo:

I'd probably decarb my pucks for the crispness. Never tried the sea salt. Lol!

there is a little piece of bud in that 2nd one, it happens, i'm engineering a better kief tumbler atm, so meanwhile I'm just smashin nug pucks, not too careful, rather dab the flecks then leave the product behind, run my nail pretty damn cool (torch on quartz banger, minute 15 after red goes away, carb cap...minute 20 even...imo if the nail is dry when ur done it was too hot, i read somewhere and its so true, "you gotta waste it to taste it"....fun times....

cool temp sour tangie ..... is like.... wtf are we doing here? orange juice flavor rookie baked

alright already ... I'm sold .

All chem extracts have their downfall in the flavors department , I think I actually might like Rosin if only for my hash vape pen :bongrip:

I have a flat curling iron laying around ... maybe I could pop a bud in this weekend and see what I think :3

Thanks Comradess, Cheers and stay safe :bongrip:
