Rex's Perpetual Hydroponics, LED, 4x4 Tent Using TBC 10 Gal System: All Are Welcome, Come Learn & Help

Like a boss!
Thanks DD, she survived the night- may the odds stay in her favor (better be a her :laughtwo: )
Duct tape - is there anything it can't do?!

Muy bien that the root rot has faded into the rearview.

I saw your mention of possible Mg deficiency. Glad you saw that - I didn't want to speak out of turn but I shuddered when I saw the inter veinal chlorosis. That drove me round the bend until you vectored @FelipeBlu in to my journal. Thanks, again, to both of you folks.

Gotta go back and re-read your journal (again). Lots of great plants and great info!
Hey Delps8, thanks for swinging by!

Never be shy, there's no such thing as speaking out of turn here :).

Normally I'm pretty obsessive over my plants to be honest. This run, I'm a bit less so. And I had a hard time getting things dialed in, between the root rot, and the fact the Blackberry is technically roughly a week younger...not my best work let's just say.
Hopefully tomorrow when I change the reservoir, I'll come in with the right mix, and then they'll be off into the stretch.
I'm thinking my mix will look roughly something like:
220PPPM cal mag
330 PPM FloraNova Bloom
15 PPM Diamond Nectar
40 PPM Koolbloom Liquid (I may adjust this one).

Thanks Shed, one was a relief, the other a big happy surprise!

Thank you N420! I'm stoked on the turn around, I was worried for a bit.

Hey Jon! Thanks, I had to re-read the Uncle Ben method. I've done my usual topping at the 4th node, and removal of nodes 1 & 2. The GG auto I was considering doing a four cola plant, or something similar (which would be an very similar to the Uncle Ben method?).
The others kinda started with a quad. The kinda comes from me shaping the plants. If a branch is pointing at a corner beside the plant, where growth will be limited (except upwards)- that branch gets snipped. The plant will redirect the energy to the other branches, and I don't have to constantly fight with the branch to avoid it becoming dominant.

For those interested- when a branch becomes higher then the surrounding branches, it becomes dominant. The plant will put extra energy into the dominant branch. I go for equilibrium as much as possible. This spreads the energy equally and you get a nice supply of colas. At least that's my understanding :hmmmm::ganjamon:

Day 34

Cabinet temp: 27C avg
Cabinet RH%: ~50%
Previous PPM: 384
Current PPM: 355
Adjusted PPM to: 355
PH: 5.7
Res temps: 19.6C
Water level: steady drop, 3-6L /day

All three autos are looking fairly decent. Despite my clumsiness and breaking branches. I will say that at this moment, I'm loving the PH stability. I've barely had to adjust the PH, whereas when I'm using the hydroton as a 100% medium, I'm adjusting sometimes twice a day. This could be from a few different things, but I'm loving it and not complaining :cheesygrinsmiley:.

So far my experimental root blocking materials appears to be working, let's hope that continues. :snowboating:

I've begun to shape the plants to the space their in, and still, im undecided as to tossing a net in. Though I'm leaning heavily towards it.

Right now I've got the Nextlight 420h turned up to 328 Watts, and each highest point of the plants are receiving roughly 40k of lux. I'll be slowly turning it up more, once I get the heat in the cabinet down. Right now the Wappa is showing some signs of heat stress.

I've just about got everything set for the res change out. During which time I will be switching from the Floranova Grow, to the Floranova Bloom. They're no longer liking the N levels.
ill also start adding in some GH Koolbloom (liquid).
I'll definitely need to up the cal mag to roughly 220PPM worth, as all three are showing deficiencies.

The Photoperiods:

Sela got her first transplant into a 3 gallon plastic container (i need to pickup some 3 gallon fabric pots). It was also my first time transplanting :cheesygrinsmiley:

And Cilla is just slowly doing her thing, and will also be transplanted soon too.

And that's all for now, :thanks: for following along!

Idk know anything about hydro but I must say the root picz are satisfying to see.. great job, I'm hela late so I'll start here

Hi HappyHazmat88! And welcome to my perpetual journal!

No such thing as late here, or ever any pressure to go through the whole journal!
This is just a bit of winter time fun, and a jar stuffer run. And won't be pretty :laughtwo: .
Normally I'm in a 4x4 tent, and i have grow rooms in the works (hopefully this summer they'll be done in time for a big fall time grow).
But it's all froze over for the winter, just too expensive to heat that entire garage at this time of year.

Spring time here will see a flurry of changes happening, from 4 plants outside, the grow rooms being built, the tent being put back into use, and a few other projects- depending if I have enough $$ to make it all happen.

Feel free to kick back, relax and ask anything- no such thing as silly questions!

And here's a recap of the first 35 days of growth.

Thanks and I hope everyone has a great weekend!
And look Shed, no shakes this time! ;) :laughtwo:

The time lapse is cool.

Well done Rex, it’s so cool to watch the girls grow up before our eyes!

I must say for your first go round with soil your doing a great job, keep up the good work!

Morning Rex nothing like gleaming white roots , makes them girls grow legs . How did you get root rot ? Must have been slight because 35 days they look great !

Thanks, I love doing those. You can almost always expect me to put one or two out for each of my grows :cheesygrinsmiley:

Thanks N420!
I'm quite sure it went this smoothly, only from following a few soil journals :laughtwo:

West my brother, always nice to see you!
I've been loving peeking at those roots, I see the fun I've been missing, using hydroton as a medium. And that constant peeking is what let me spot the root rot.
Yeah it wasn't a full blown slimy rot. I got lucky and caught it early. A touch of brown setting in, and I acted quickly. I believe it started from Light leaks, or some residual contamination that was missed when cleaning/putting the system together (or maybe a combo).

You can see a bit of it here

I thought you'd be happy to know I decided to give that raw kelp a try...whenever it arrives.
Thats nice!
Just remember its a very concentrated extract and as it has 1% K2O you can burn/stunt/retard the growth pretty easily, by foliar feeding younger plants.
I’m pretty sure Wedding Cake auto were idling that week for because the seedling got some drops on it whilst I was spraying the TD.

But when applied to the roots/reservoir it makes the lateral and root hair growth CRAZY!

This is TD roots couple days ago (stopped feeding Kelp like ~5 days ago)

It colors the roots which are submerged - looking pretty ugly dark right now. But look at those new ones, how much lateral hairs :surf:

Also posted yday on Stinkers journal as hes using VeloKep - using longer perioids and higher doses of Ascophyllym nodosum may unbalance plants hormonal activity.
So far Ive seen very odd plants which has been fed with RAW’s Kelp from the very beginning. If you want I can DM you some examples as theyre from different sites and sharing links to their sites not allowed here.

Still lacking that tent cam. Cheapest one with timelapse was 50€.

Very nice! And yeah, I know I'll loose that pearly white they've got, but it was on sale so it was good timing for me.
I'm not sure on PMs talking about different forums, so I shall pass, but take that clue and go do some digging :thanks:

Can you get a cheap Wyze Cam? They're cheap, amazing units!
That's all I'm using. And technically it's not a time-lapse video, but a crapload of photos from the camera, stitched together into a gif. That was my work around to get them on here like that.

Day 36

Cabinet temp: 25C avg
Cabinet RH%: ~50%
Previous PPM: 321
Current PPM: didn't check before dumping
Adjusted PPM to: 547
PH: 5.8
Res temps: 21.3C (dropping from chiller)
Water level: reset/ reservoir change

Happy Saturday folks! I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far! I did a reservoir change today, now we wait and see how they like it.
I added a small addition to the garden (see photo below ;) )

Interesting little trick. When mixing up the new batch of nutrients i decided to try a different approach to mixing. As i didn't have a spare airstone for the external reservoir yet, i decided to make a small air injection. Sounds fancy. Really all it is, is putting a small slit in a short hose on a water pump. Slide the end of the air hose so it pops out of the water pump hose, pointed in the same direction as the water pump flow. Plug your airhose into an air pump, and voila, air added, strong current, and makes mixing nutrients great.

I doubt it's useful to many people, but I thought I'd share it all the same!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Pardon the upcoming photo dump :Rasta:

Ok that's cool as hell. Mounted camera, same time pics every day? Set on infinite loop? Awesome.

Sweet photo dump. Hey is that a big boy fan or a big boy dehumidifier? I need a dehumidifier like that if it's the latter. If so, can you specify what that one is? And not even knowing hydro, even I can see those roots are gorgeous. I especially like the GG's.

Ok that's cool as hell. Mounted camera, same time pics every day? Set on infinite loop? Awesome.
Thanks Jon! It's a mounted Wyze camera, and I just go into the app when checking on the plants, and click "take photo" inside the app.
Then they get stitched together into a gif using a different app.

The camera is handy to check the plants at any time from anywhere, and I leave a temp/RH reader visible on the camera, so a quick peek on the camera shows me everything I need to know.

The fan is a Noma (brand) and I love it. It does bursts as well as oscillating, and even works fine upside down in the tent (it's a bit big/awkward in the cabinet). The small blue thing in the bottom is actually a humidifier, and should come out now (the plants transpiration is now sufficient RH).
At this time of year, the air is bone dry- in the summer its dripping wet.

The dehumidifier, I just got one for a house and didn't screw around :laughtwo:, a dehumidifier made for 800 square feet, in a 4x4 does the job great :cheesygrinsmiley: .

That (the dehumidifier) won't be put back in use till spring.

Thanks! And now that I see your explanation on the camera I realize I just asked you to repeat info you covered well earlier in this journal. Lol, my bad. Interesting fan. Do those buttons on top light up, and can you cover them and have it still operate properly, maybe just remove the tape to change a setting or whatever?

LOL thats some MacGyver stuff :laughtwo: I like it!

Gorilla Glue seem to be very N sensitive.
Does it express the N excess symptoms at ~300ppm res? o_O
And I’m pretty sure that Blackberry going to start show next stage Mg def symptoms soon.. It could be some inmobile micro def/lockout, but it looks like its drawing stuff from the lower fans.

As it is day 36, have you found any pistils yet from the main stalk sticking out? Looks like theyre bout jump into stretch mode :green_heart:
