Relaxed's Winter Experiment

Here's the last Hong Kong OG (bait plant!) nug. The plant was, like I said before, grown in a 2-3 gallon terracotta pot and was ment to be worm bait, but never actually got infested, I didn't expect it to grow this big in such a small pot, but it just goes to show sometimes things can adapt and overcome and still produce a fine bud. I paid little attention to this plant, and surprisingly did not find 1 worm in it, very lucky. The current KC-45 "auto flowers" are in the same 2-3 gallon terracottas, just thought I'd mention it.

Thank you for the words RL, and I do understand your points. I would have liked to have them 3 weeks in but like everything else. What you want and what is feasible are not the same. I respect your views knowing you have first hand experience of what extreme changes take place in this location. All my misfortunes have been small issues compounded by climate. Being it jumps 25 to 30 degree`s in average temperature and 35 to 40% in the humidity, within 30 to 45 days. Like I say I am 3 to 4 weeks behind, but regardless of that. What I have learned, also from a gut feeling and seeing that what I could not change in the past grows is where the problems stem from. So with over watering, misjudging the nuit`s and repotting. Having to flush or even mishandling them. The temperature and humidity after June 1st is where what you mentioned come into play. So 2 small issue`s overnight become catastrophic and recovery is 3x what it should be normally. Causing you to over react producing more stress. With January through March, that 50 to 70 days( give or take) of developmental veg and having been topped, and recovered from. So that is why I felt the 8 to 10 weeks of April and May are where that structure in the flowering is stable and most constant for the plants needs. No flux it temps and humidity and the light issue has never been a problem. They grow into it , as they increase they are going into explosive growth as the suns energy increase`s also. So it is something they are craving and utilize. The suns energy from May to July is almost the same intensity, the "duration of it" and restricted ability to vent is where the issues stem from. So I will find out and wished to be able to have them on there 3 set of leaves by now. There is always next year and what I learn in the next 4 months is an investment into it. So regardless the out come, knowledge is gained. Even vegetables gardens stop producing and local native plants, seam to go dormant. Instead of trying to produce new growth, it is more self-preservation mode. So I hope to have an answer by mid-June. Thanks for the time and energies. I can and will ramble for ever so it is time for a bowl and a brownie, it usually shuts me up. Hope all goes green in your word and Happy Hunting...Peace.....

Some plant pics from today, noticed a few 11 petaled fan leaves, kind of interesting to see vs. the normal 7 or 9...you can see some of the very bottom most branches stretching out for the sun. The tallest one is drooping a tad bit because I watered it cold water, but it'll bounce back. News, I found a little worm wrapped up in a leaf, and some parts of the leaf chewed. No shocker there I guess, I've been seeing moths out at night, since it warmed up heavily in the past weeks, perhaps the mating season for them will be shifted to during my veg time and I'll see less moth problems in the future with the warm winters. Anyway just some thoughts, here are some pics

One thing I can say for sure is that these plants smell amazingly good. If you rub your thumb on the main stem, you can feel the resin inside, and then smelling your thumb it smells like exotic fruity love...interesting for sure. Hopefully they shoot some pre-flowers out in the next week.... :Namaste:

Nice pics! :thumb: I just saw 2 moths in 5 minutes, we gotta find a smell that they will not come near.

Legend has it that, 11 leaves is on a plant is good luck, just like a 4 leaf clover!

Frame that Lucky Leaf, it's helping you down the road to the coveted, back to back Crowns!! :cheertwo:

Hey RL, I had some time to post in the grow room under " Happy New Year....2014 ATTEMPT" in the grow journals. Will be able to provide more / some insight and explain what`s going on with the plants progress AND MY THOUGHT PROCESS. Good luck to you and all the others and looking forward to good result and others inputs. I am not fancy and striped down, bare basics and a good imagination. So only time will tell...Peace.....

Hey can you explain to me the purpose of a "bait plant"? Also, guy wanting to germinate seeds and tangle their roots together... You should start your own thread, so we are not confused as to what the bleep you are doing. ;)

OK Lest, stop pulling our legs. What are you really feeding those things? LOL...
All joking aside, they look healthy as the board of health.

Hey Redlan, during the regular growing season, I have a big moth problem. They strike when the iron is hot right during mid-late flower, they lay eggs in the buds and then the buds become worm infested. The idea with a bait plant is that the moths typically look for tall plants with nice aromatic flower heads to lay their eggs in (they love cannabis), so I figured if I could attract them all with a bait plant I could salvage/save my main planter bed from a larger infestation. There are lots of different bait plants, for instance, I also planted Brocolli, lots of it, as bait plants because I read european corn borers love it too (see link my signature for my information on E.C.B.s).
They love weed a lot, so anything other than a weed bait plant won't do much. But they also love Italian Parsley...there is a lot of detail to this story, my attack mode, style, and plans to get away with a successful harvest. There is nothing worse than seeing all your beautiful buds rotten and infested with worms sent straight from the depths of hell. Anyway, hope this helps you understand why I labeled that one a "bait plant", because I wanted to attract the moths away from the bulk of my plants. :Namaste:

Haha, well, strictly organic bat guano teas. They originally all had a heavy/strong tea of Dr. Earth 10-3-1 bat guano in the beginning.... now that I've slightly anticipated some pre-flowering, I start watering with a lighter solution of 4-5-4 "for acid loving plants" of the Dr. Earth bat guano for the transition... if that tall one gets a foot taller I am actually going to be bending it down, who knows, the thing could grow to be 7 ft tall which isn't exactly what I was looking for at the moment :goof:

11 leaf lets is nice. I have seen 13 before when I was growing on the Big Island, they where big plants though. I have heard/read can get more, but not seen personally. I am pretty sure it pure genetics. My memory telling me that it a characteristic of Sativa's to have more leaf lets.

Awesome, much appreciated friend! So you are doing companion plants, in a sick sacrificial sort of way....hah. Had no idea moths were such an issue! Thanks for the update on that one!

 Yeah, indeed.

You are welcome, Redlan. :high-five:

Looking good! I can't even grow tomatoes in a clay pot. Lol. Think I freeze the roots at night or something. Still haven't figured that one out.

Thanks! It has a lot to do with geographic location.

I have a similar battle in my yard, looking for answers.

What are your thoughts of a "bait plant" possibly bringing MORE moths near your girls, ??

I read moths love Petunias (helped a little), the buds still got moth eggs every night. :nicethread:

On that subject, I think you are onto something with these Petunias because apparently there is a "night-scented" hybrid, and may work as a "bait plant" if put in the correct location relative to cannabis growing area. There are a few things to consider though, with Petunia, you can't just have 1 Petunia plant and expect the fragrance to overwhelm the natural instincts of the moths when they're out looking to lay eggs. Now, I'm not a Petunia expert, but you'd either need to have a really good strand of Petunias, and I'm guessing you'd have at least 10 Petunias per 1 cannabis plant, or be one of the best Petunia growers in the world. I think with Cannabis the "Tall Factor" wins..... with the High-Flyers, they're groomed to search far and wide to look for those scents, I still stick with there is no better bait plant than the one they're looking for (which I'm convinced they're out looking for cannabis because of it's hospitality towards new eggs), so like I said, location is everything.

Do what works for you! I have more seeds to pop than money to spend on exotic Petunias, I'll tell ya that though! :thumb:

The guardian of the cannabis. Teach her how to catch those moths. LOL
I can't believe the size of the fan leaves on those plants. Almost half the size of kitty!
Nice pic Lester. :thumb:

Yes, she is! Actually you know it's funny you say that because I have seen her in the yard running around jumping and swatting in the air trying to catch them! :laughtwo:

That cat looks stoned on RL's Medicinal Catnip, are you missing any buds Les? Does the cat kill moths? There's an idea!

I haven't considered growing my own catnip, especially for the price that it is on the market, just one more bud to dry and store lol, well, I only buy American, organic catnip. She has her daily dosage, every morning after breakfast, she often likes to have another round right around lunch time / mid afternoon. This cat has the life.:wood:

When the moth season starts, I'd still use a bug-zapper light, if feasible. I know that on my property I don't have enough area to grow outdoors. We have a large lot, but at the beginning of a culdesac. Lots of headlights turning and flashing lights at night.

I'm not a stalker. From your photos with very nice outdoor plants, I know that you can achieve total darkness to flower those beauties.

I'm still thinking you may benefit, with the moths, to hang one of those bug-zapper lights far and away from the garden-if feasible.

They really do attract them. Maybe a $30-$40 investment. Even with the power draw, I know you would recuperate that cost in a single season.

Just my two cents. You obviously know what you're doing. That Purple Haze of yours has nearly developed a cult following. +++REPS.

Keep 'em green my friend.
