Rascio - It's Growing!

Light IS the engine that powers the grow Rascio. I know less than nothing about HID, but there are many here who can speak authoritatively on this. Graytail? Care to toss in a thought?

I used a 600 watt hps and found that 14 inches is the limit for mature flowering plants. Closer than that and the pistils on the top buds will start to shrivel. I haven't used one in veg, though, just a 250 watt MH and I run that no closer than 8 inches.

A 600 watt HID emits well over 1000 umols at 24 inches, and close to 3000 at 14 inches. The sun delivers about 1500.

:Namaste:

Wow!

Interesting conversation among CFL users.

I'd probably pin a 600w to teh ceiling for veg...never heard of anyone using more than 400 for veg...not that it isn't doable...maybe overkill....

Good use of those CFLs is what pushed my initial grow beyond mediocre to exciting and netted me a very respectable harvest. Light was the engine that powered my grow as well.

Can you grow using any cheaper, low end artificial light than CFL?

If you can, I'm unaware of it. I agree, without your CFL's or another form of light, your initial grow would have struggled hehehe.

I'm a big fan of irony and humor in the universe, we'll all be dead soon.

For small spaces there are low wattage options SIGNIFICANTLY better than CFL. Considering the investment in both time and money people make to the rest of their grow, and then talk about the importance of lighting vis a vis their CFLs....I chuckle.

To be fair, both you and Rascio have upgraded! Good on yas.

Thank you Graytail, exactly what I needed to know. My ballast is dimmable, so I'll try running at 50% and 12".:thumb:

Welcome to the world of having to make decisions on a minimal budget. Here is the basis for some of my admittedly odd micro-economic decisions:

I originally planned to gather all my equipment and start my grow late in June.

By May 1, I had some seeds, a tent, and some potting soil, Doc's kit was on its way, and I was beginning to save for a nice LED.

Inspired by SweetSue and others at :420: I realized that with CFLs, I could start some seedlings growing for less than 20 bucks. At that point, I planned to use cfls right through veg, and budgetted to have the same LED when it was time to flower.

I soon got tired of trying to find optimal spots for the little bulbs, and had a couple hundred bucks to spend. I could have got a cheap LED panel, or a nice bank of 4' T5s. Instead I got an HID, ballast, reflector, hangers, and a digital timer.

I probably would have looked closer at lower power options, but my rent Includes electricity, and it isn't even metered separately from the other units in my building. Now I'm good to go right through flower. Had I bought T5s, I'd be shopping for new lights to flower with. Instead, I am shopping for a fan, filter, and controller.

I'm pretty happy with the odd choices I've made so far. One day I will once again have the cash flow to build a fabulous home for my plants, something like your tribute shed even!

As it is I'm beginning this hobby of a lifetime in an apartment smaller than your shed, with a matching income. I'm not bitchin', just showing that sometimes things other than efficiency and long term cost effectiveness come into play.

BrixKlinger, know I'm watching your build and will watch the monsters you grow in there with admiration!

Welcome BearsWhoWalk!:welcome:

Lovely little plants you have there! Your small space shows care and ingenuity. Good luck on your grow.:thumb:

One of the reasons I chose CFLs the first grow was their efficiency. The 23watt CFL is actually very efficient if you can get the distance right. I singed a lot of leaves, but grew some potent cannabis as well. Yep, the inevitable upgrade. That never really stops, I'm certain of it. :laughtwo:

Whoopsie

Apparently I underguesstimated the temp by about 20°F. Working on ways to improve my DIY swamp cooler.

Light is now high and everything got a good water. Temp at 92 RH 29% ... still adjusting things but confident I can get environment within reasonable bounds for the three weeks itll be before I have a proper exhaust fan and filter.

I don't think I can go wrong by following Duggan's advice to SweetSue. So that's what I'll do. :thumb::blunt:

Yeah, seriously, 90+ isn't doable, won't work.

Low 80s is maximum unless you run CO2.

Moving in the right direction:

I know I have a ways to go, but I can already hear a collective sigh of relief from my abused and battered tent inmates.

Don't worry little ladies, there will be a comfortable environment for you to thrive soon. Until then I'll be happy to keep them alive. Hmmm, attempting to teach a plant patience .... the arrogance!

The direct line of anscestors of these plants survived hundreds of floods and hundreds of droughts ... can these seedlings survive Rascio? We shall see. :peace::passitleft:

The fan and filter combo changed my life Rascio, easily maintaining both heat and humidity to almost perfect levels. I'll do a dance of joy with you when you finally get yours.

They look great. That big girl on the left looks like a big fat Indica. I like the fat girls! Oh, did I just say that? Ooops.

They make the rockin' world go round. :theband::party::theband:

Hoping these girls are getting fat bottoms where it counts - in the soil.

Have a little survey here.
Afghan Kush - 100% indica
Silver Haze - 75% sativa says Sensi Seeds. Some say 50% (another Afghan Kush x Original Haze)
Brazil Amazonia - World of Seeds says 75% sativa landrace. It looks a lot more sativa-like than the SH to me so far, except for its squatness. Really hoping this one is female, especially after looking through SmokeyMcfly's grows of this strain.
cheers!

If this is a survey, I like a 100% indica, Short, fat and sticky. (To the tune of Montrose)

My wife likes the sativa, Long, tall and lanky. (Don't know who sang that?)

I say, whatever you like, go with the old classic strains from reputable breeders/brokers..

You don't know what you like until you grow it and like it :)
