Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

Yes she is. I have a weird one for you guys today. Pretty sure this is what they mean by stretch indica LOL. This is the Clown Royal female. The only one out of 5 seeds. Even after being topped it still needed to be bent to stay out of the lights. This plant grew just like the Glueberry did. The bending really helped the lower buds on this plant.
It has a perfect place in the tent to spread out like this. Good thing because I needed all of it lol. Still what buds are there are rock solid. 4 colas instead of one so I don't have a great cola picture

It smells just like GG #4 so I know I am going to like that part. Looks frosty enough to be potent so it could be a winner.

I am still on the fence so far with Second Generation seeds. I got this hybrid because it had his dad's genetics in it. I like Glueberry so a GG #4 x Blueberry F-5 should be near the same. Thing is, after growing up in the grow community I kind of would expect more. Mostly what I see him doing is crossing most stuff with dad's stuff. It is no different than just another D.J. Short breeder.

I feel he had one hell of a head start on things. With that he hasn't managed to come up with as interesting stuff as guys out there that started on their own. I would have been more impressed if he had took his Whitaker Blues and made his own strains from there. Or at least had went with some of his dads old genetics and went a different way with them. Almost every breeder has used his dads genetics. Pretty sure he could have did better if he had tried.

I am now kind of settled on my 4 plants to regenerate. Both the Ghost Train Haze and BOO are in a tent with seeds. Pretty sure I am going to get at least a few SSH hybrids from these. The Ghost Train Haze got some SSH pollen so it should produce a few more. No use doing things twice.

More and more that sick little Strawberry Lemonade is impressing me. It is pumping out tons of trichomes. I noticed them early on when all the leaves were yellow and ugly. As the plant got better so did all the frost. Extremely frosty plants are not always the best. It sure doesn't hurt though. Only the best plants are going to get pollen. So far this plant is showing its stuff.

Plants to be regenerated. 2 Super Silver Haze, Strawberry Lemonade, Banana Sorbet. The middle SSH is kind of taking over as the plant to reverse. The short is still the best indoor plant. The middle one is the best all around plant. It looks to be a bit frostier and the smell is better. I will have plenty of time to decide which plant to reverse. First off I need to see if either one regenerates. By then I will have got the chance to smoke both the females. I am pretty sure the test smokes of them will show me the way I need to go. If the high from the short plant compares well then it will be the winner. If neither regenerates then I will probably try and self the Banana Sorbet.

Here is the medium SSH female. Pretty sure it is Skunk #1 dominate. The sweetness to the smell is kind of winning me over. I am definitely going to regenerate it. I am going to have to wait and smoke them for a while before I decide which one to reverse. Buds are firming up nicely. Here are a few pictures of her.

It is weird. When looking at it, it looks frostier then the short pheno. Pictures don't seem to do it justice though.

It all matters what is in them trichomes LOL. The better smell of the medium plant is going to have to battle with the better growth structure of the short plant. Pretty sure there is not going to be a cut and dried winner. On the bright side the feminized seeds from the 2 SSH plants should be good to go. No matter which one gets to be the male. The medium plant would be the better pollen doner to the short pheno. Problem is the short pheno would be better for hybrids. Hmmmmm?

As I was working with the plants yesterday. I noticed something interesting. Last grow I grew out a Blim Burn, Blue Dream. It was nothing like the Blue Dream I had grown before. I really wasn't sure what it was. It smokes really good so I don't care that much. I really didn't see any Haze or Blueberry in it. The finished product seemed to resemble what it should have been.

They just made there own Blue Dream and I found the pheno of SSH that they used. I can see similarities between the medium SSH and that Blue Dream. So much so I know they used this pheno. There is a chance I will use it too.

Now that I am with in a month of the end of my last grow. I get a chance to step back and see how my new feeding plan has worked. I think it is on track to be the new way I grow. I lost lots more fan leaves then I like too this run. Next time I will know to keep the nitrogen going a while longer. These flower nuits do not have enough to keep them green early in flower. It seems to be doing fine now. With the new starvation rations being low enough I am not going to need a long flush. This should help the plants do better in their last month. Lots of times I have plants run out of food a couple weeks early. This time I should be able to feed up till he last 10 days or so. We will see.

At some point in time I am going to want to change to Fertilome Ultimate potting soil and do a drain to waste hydro thing.

I am having a hard time deciding if there will be one more orange peal pheno of BOO in the seeds I have left. I have one right now. I might have to keep it. There is a good chance I will try and regenerate it. If I use the SSH as the pollen donor I will get a few orange offspring. How hard they will be to find is another thing. This plant might be better selfed. Then I would be back to trying to self a selfed plant. Not sure how that will work. I may want to keep this plant but I don't want to keep a mother around all the time.

To keep BOO I am going to have to drop the second SSH plant. That is not a big deal I have more SSH seeds to do at least 2 more runs. There is a chance that I will have room to regenerate 5 plants. I might as well go big. This might be the last breeding cycle I do for a bit. It will also give me a chance to try my ideas and see how it works. I would end up with

Strawberry Lemonade x SSH
Banana Sorbet x SSH
Bag of Oranges x SSH
Super Silver Haze S-1

With all the new seeds I have got lately that will be plenty. From now on I think I will find great plants first and then worry about how to make seeds out of them. Like I mentioned there are 2 or 3 winners this run. That is the problem with growing quality genetics. You find so many great plants LMAO.

I guess it is now time to start figuring out how to do all I need to this summer. The plan was to get rid of any signs of growing in the whole house. That is why I bought the smaller tents. I can hide them in a closet. As I mentioned yesterday the great plants are piling up.

Out of all of them. I am thinking BOO is the one that I really need to keep. If things continue as they are. This is the orange plant I have been looking for for a while. If the highs, flavors, and effects can keep up with the smell this is a great plant. I would hate to kill it and not find another like it in the seeds I have left. Everything else should be able to be recreated with the seeds I have. So after I clone them to make seeds I am going to have to keep this plant alive longer than the others. The plan was to clone and then kill the mothers.

What matters the most. If I were to save all the best plants for next years first grow. I would be smoking the same weed for over a year. I just don't do that shit LMAO. I would be bored and wanting more variety no matter how good it will be. Trust me I thought of that lol. The main reason to save the BOO is to try and self it after I do the SSH hybrids.

All this is going to take space. Even in the small tents. Which creates problem 2. I have a few Auto flower strains that I was planning on running to start next year. The plan was to start a few auto's when I start my photo strains. They should finish up soon after I up-pot and go to flower with the photo's. I only need to keep things hid for a small portion of the time. Once the house work is done I can ramp up again when ever that time comes.

Here is a updated look at the tall SSH plant. It is just getting started. It is budding slower than everything else. I don't know how it will finish. The late flowering Liberty Haze caught up real fast and ended up being harvested only a week after the others. I don't think I will be that lucky here. Other than the burned tips of her leaves she is doing really well. This plant doesn't want the tons of food the other 2 are going through.

The next few close ups kind of tell a story. Not sure what it is yet LMAO. No really it does. While this plant does not have the extreme trichome coverage that some new strains have. They really are quite impressive. At week 7 it is just starting to pump out resin. The size and shape of the trichomes is pretty good for a bud at this stage. What they loose in numbers they makeup for in size. I was lucky enough to get a few good clear close ups.

Either way I can't wait for this plant to finish. I am hoping for something totally different.

Today we take another look at the best Strawberry Lemonade. It was the sick plant that gave me so much hell. The 2 that grew better don't have near the trichome coverage of this plant. I don't believe I almost pulled this plant. If I would have had a full tent I would have. Just lucky I guess. This is one of the plants I hope to regenerate.

Maybe it is that I don't take pictures of lesser pheno's LMAO. It seems it is hard to get what I see in real life to come out in pictures. You are going to have to take my word that they are the frostiest. Even without the frost the bud formation and density of this plant are better then its sisters. I lolly popped this plant and its lower branches are full of buds now.

I am so glad I finally grew out Super Silver Haze. Such a interesting strain. I don't really know how many pheno's there are but it looks like I have the 3 basic.

The tall SSH looks like it is going to be nothing but calyx's all over when it finishes. Good thing, they are just covered in trichomes. I am pretty sure this would test pretty high for THC %. Not because I grew it so well. Because there is going to be so little plant matter to the buds. I have never grown a plant with this much old school haze in it. Normally the highs are totally different.I hope that is the case here. What is really cool is I am just now getting to see what it is going to do. All the rest of the plants in the tent are starting to finish. I might need to keep this plant too LMAO.

The Northern Light pheno is starting to get the sweetness that the skunk pheno has had all the time. That smell was the major factor I was considering when it came to keeper plants. Funny how once I decided to regenerate both. The short pheno decided to sweeten up. It is just pushing me to use it lol. So far that has been the only thing keeping this plant from being the pure winner.

The Skunk #1 pheno is still a great plant. That's what makes this strain so cool. Each pheno looks just like those strains are supposed to look. This is exactly like the old Skunk #1 looked like in all the photos. It also had the sweet smell that the Skunk #1 that the UK used. It looks a bit frostier at times. They all do. So now it really only matters what they do to you lol. Every SSH will be saved for a time as if I will keep it. I am going to need to test drive the weed a bit to really see which ones I will reverse.

When it comes to the tall haze pheno. If I decide to keep it. I am going to have to decide which plant to reverse to breed into it. I don't think I want to take the time it might need to reverse it and get pollen. It will be easier to try and reverse Banana Sorbet to breed into the haze. The best Banana Sorbet is one of the best looking plants I have grown. It has it all. Sweetest smell, most frost, best production. Pretty much this is the plant that they meant this strain to be. It sure wouldn't hurt to have a few S-1's of it.

Good morning Jack. I have a question about fresh seeds after harvest. In the last week I've taken down a few plants from my seed run. One has 100% germ rate and really fast. Other 2 strains not so much.

So my question is do you set the seeds out to dry before putting them in storage. Or any type of cure. Do you wait awhile before you try to crack them.

Thanks brother

I do try and let them dry some before going into the fridge. Mostly that is because I smoke the weed the seeds are in and I just take them out as I go. When it is all done I store them. They have had plenty of time to dry by then.

It would probably be best to let them sit out for a couple weeks just to be sure. I don't know that they need 2 months to dry like is suggested. I have had seeds sprout soon after they were harvested. I sent a package to a friend and included seeds I had just pulled out to send along. The guy started them soon after and they all popped and grew well. They couldn't have been over a month old.

Not sure about the strains that didn't pop well. Could be they need to dry or it could be something else. It wouldn't hurt to try and scuff them and try again once they have dried for a month.

Thanks. You read mixed things from different people. The one that's eager to pop was the least resinous. Don't know if the sticky seeds from the more resinous plants are the issue. I'll take your advice because I know you have the correct experience.
Yesterday I harvested seeds from my Chernobyl slymer pheno. Probably 2k seeds. Had flash backs of the old days tilting a album cover and using a card to roll seeds out :laughtwo: The good old days. Lmao

Here is a few nug shots of MysteryCleaner at day55 of flower. She still smells identical to a pack of juicy fruit gum no funk at all!!!
