Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

Thank you. I can't wait to see what these Super Silver Haze look like in flower. I don't think they will be the strongest but they very well could be the best.

Last time I grew a bucket list strain (Cinderella 99) I was way impressed. I expect the same outcome from SSH.

I am starting to train everything a bit now. I trained my cat to sit so these plants shouldn't be too much trouble lol. Everything is bushy enough. I just need to spread everything out a bit for better light penetration. First time I have tried training plants like this. We will have to see how it goes.

Yes Pennywise it's Mr Nice. The one real version. I am hoping to find a keeper to regenerate. Lots of different looking females. I am going to get some different pheno's to choose from. I will be saving one of the Haze leaning pheno's to self. There are lots of good genetics in this hybrid. The Haze that I am the most interested in.

I want to find one female from regular genetics to regenerate and reverse for pollen. This is more to prove my process and practice selfing than anything else. For this I may choose a SSH pheno that is not on the Hazy side. I want the best plant more than the best Haze. There is a chance Clown Royal will have what I am looking for. There is a G.G. looking pheno I think.

From the smell of the house today it looks like it is almost time to keep fans running 24/7. That is a key reason I didn't want this many tents LOL. The power for the light is not the major factor anymore.

I told myself I wasn't going to bitch about bills if I chose to run the 1000 watt HPS on full power. If I dropped it to 75% that would cover for the extra fans. I would rather have fat chubby girls then low power bills LMAO.

Lost 2 more Clown Royal plants to sexism. Thought these were females before for some reason. Maybe it was just that I wasn't going to keep them. Either way they are gone. Down to only 1 female out of 5 seeds. I hate those kind of odds LMAO. I'm not sure if this has to do with how they were made or not. I think it does.

Either way that leaves me with 4 less plants in the same sized tent. As you can see the tent is still full.
This is going to give me some interesting info about square footage. Most plants in that tent are in 3 gallon pots. So there is the same amount of light, square footage, and soil. The only difference is the amount of plants and the strains being grown. I should be able to get almost as much from this tent as I did before. Everything has a couple more branches than before. Most plants are shorter. I thought SSH stretch was going to be worse than it really is.

Everything has a good root base and the age they need to produce. Now we have to wait and see if they do. I really wish I could have got to finish a F5 Blueberry pheno of the Clown Royal. No Royal all I get is the Clown LMAO.

Both male SSH plants are starting to build buds. So far they seem similar for the most part. I just don't know that I am going to see any major differences between them other than leaf size. I trimmed them both plants down to just the main stalk and a few small branches. That will help control pollen a bit when it shows up. I still have hope of being able to use some of it this grow. If not I will probably save some of each male for a later date. Unless one shows it is better that is.

Still the best way to make hybrids from this grow is going to be with feminized pollen from regenerated females. I am sure out of the 4 female SSH plants I will find one pheno I like if not love. What gets saved to go with it still depends on what looks the best. With Cataract Kush, Banana Sorbet, and Bag of Oranges going there is a good chance I am going to love one of them enough to regenerate. The fact that I want to try and self SSH is a given. I will do it this time and every time I grow this strain. Before all these seeds are gone I will have a feminized SSH. If things go well I may have 2 different pheno's selfed.

More and more I am getting the mind set I need. I now plan to just to grow till I find special plants. Then regenerate only the best. These I can pollinate with male pollen if I so choose. If my feminized seeds come out I will probably never use males again. Great plants will show up I am sure. Where is the big question. With all the genetics I have there is tons of room for great plants. I keep forgetting that not all plants or strains need to be bred or have traits I even like. At one time I only had 3 or 4 regular strains I wanted to breed with. Now I have plenty with solid enough genetics to bred with. Queen of Soul can take the place of C-99 in some hybrids now. I can use these very similar strains in different ways and get a larger variety

One key here is testing each plant somewhere before I harvest them. I need to know ahead of time what strains to regenerate. Problem is my first impressions of a strain change sometimes. It always seems like the first high is the best. Great plants seem to jump right out at you. The frost is hard to not notice when you get the extremely frosty plant. Now that I know they are out there. I can keep them going now so it is probably going to be a long time for me to find a great one LOL.

Damn males! I found another male hiding under the skirts of my females. Lost a SSH that I had mistakenly thought was female. Checked all other plants and they are female for sure. 1 may still change I am not positive on one plant. I still think I can fill the tent with buds. Plants are not as tall but are plenty bushy.

On the bright side. I have plenty of room for the SSH plants to spread out and do what they want. I just got some new netting that I plan to try and use this grow. Not sure how it will work yet. Mostly I want to use it to keep the branches separated and in the right places. I wont be tying the branches down to it.

I do like all the extra room right now. We will have to see if I can get less plants to do more. The one key thing to that is having room for them to grow.

Hey Jack I started a thread about breeding. Trying to get people like you who have experience breeding to share the knowledge. If you're interested stop by

Just look what you did Dankman! You started a new thread and I failed to keep up on my journal LOL. I see it has been a few days since I have giving any updates.

Everything is doing ok. I am not super impressed with everything like I was last grow. Most plants are shorter than I wanted. I do think there is a plenty of branches in the canopy for them to still produce. I have 3 less plants then I planned to have. 5 less than what was in the tent last grow. The tent is still plenty full as of now. We will have to wait and see what I can get it to produce.

I had to put all but one of the plants in the 60 x 60 tent on booster seats. I need the light to be a certain height for the light to spread out right. I am adjusting the light to keep up with the tall SSH. The rest had to be raised to be up in the light like I want them. I order some hard foam blocks to use as booster seats. They worked perfectly. I wanted something light and adjustable. So I decided to try foam.

I ordered 11" x 17" x 2" blocks. When I cut the blocks to match the 3 gallon pots what was left over worked fine for the 2 gallon pots. I can stack them as high as I need. Only one plant was raised 6" the rest vary from 2 to 4". I am hoping the foam blocks will be easier to store and use than wood would be.

I am starting to feed Cataract Kush and SSH now. The Cataract got it first dose of flower nuits. The rest are getting veg for another couple weeks. The plan is to give them small amounts of nuits every watering now. At least for the plants that ask for it. Since I don't know any of these strains at all. I won't be using the guano I have as a top dressing. I didn't find the tea info I needed in time. Once you till guano in there is no going back. With the dreaded Miracle Grow. I can control what I give them and when. So It will be used to finish this crop.

Next year I can take my time and learn how to use my guano's as a tea and not tilled in. No use risking a whole grow to try it now. Everyone else in the world is worried about MG not me LOL. The weed is only for me anyway.

I now know all the plants a for sure female now. Only thing to do now is watch for hermies. I did notice weird looking shit on one of the Ghost Train Haze. They are feminized seeds so that may have something to do with it. I cut them off and will keep a eye out for more. I don't think they were pods but they looked different enough to cut them off. Only 3 so it is nothing to worry about yet.

Still it seems I find a hermie lots more now that I grow mostly feminized seeds. Maybe I won't loose a plant to it this year. I lost more plants then planned to males this grow. I don't have many left over to hermie LMAO.

Well everything is budding nicely. I have a couple plants that didn't like the MG feeding. Pretty sure it is to much Phosphorous. The combination between FF and MG don't seem to go together well. Plants need nitrogen but not any of the other stuff. Good thing I have some 10-3-1 guano on hand.

I am doing my best just to keep everything happy through flower. I had enough hick ups early on. Mostly the problems are with Ghost Train Haze and Strawberry Lemonade. Amazingly the SSH are doing great. One is asking for more food than the other but all are doing great.

Banana Sorbet and BOO are both doing great with what food they have in the soil.

Next grow I am going to back step a bit. I will be going back to known or hybrid of known strains I like. At least a few. Mostly to get the highs were I need them than how they grow. How they grow is a big thing though. Both Headband and C-99 have did well for me. I will grow other stuff around it.

The fact that I like my hybrids more than all other strains I grew last time was not because I am a great breeder. It has to do with the fact I bred strains I liked the high of. Lots of good weed with boring highs LOL. Plus I know how to grow both strains LOL.

Of the SSH females I have. It looks Like I have 2 NL leaning pheno's 1 Shunk pheno and 1 Haze. That is just a guess but I am doing it with some knowledge of what the strains are. The 2 NL pheno's have sativa leaves and a short stature. Even being bent they stayed short even after stretch. The Skunk stretched a little more and has a more open structure. The Haze is the tallest plant in the tent. Because of it everything else is on booster seats. 1 Strawberry Lemonade got a 6" lift to get it in the canopy.

Everything is going to have plenty of room to breath this run. I actually like less plants in this tent. We will have to wait to see if I still do after this is all over. Here is a look at the plants. The only real problem child is one of the Strawberry Lemonade. It had a metal deficiency of some kind. I treated with cal/mag and am hoping it will turn around. It is in the center of the back row.

It is about time to start taking pictures soon. I did get one picture of the Bag of Oranges I like so much. Turns out Boo is a indica LOL. All have orange coming out in the smell already. You can really smell the Tangie/Blood Orange in them.
This pheno is bushing out nicely. How that will equate to production is still up in the air.

Left most for my brother to can. They are young fish and are great for canning. No limit on that lake anymore. They want people to catch and keep as many as they want. My brother said he could fillet 20 of them. Knowing how much work that is I figured I would let him do it. We ended up catching 26 LMAO. He is caught up on canning so my guess some will be going into the smoker next trip.

Well I am probably passed the point of pollinating any females this run. I am going to keep the male alive for a little while longer. Might as well save a bit of pollen from it. There is a small chance I may make a F-2 SSH. The haze leaning pheno is well behind the other plants budding wise. It could probably still finish seeds. My guess is that this plant is going to take at least 12 weeks to finish. It is showing all haze right now. Seeds from these 2 would give me some haze leaning regular seeds that I don't have any of.

I really wanted this male to be done in time to pollinate Bag of Oranges for a Orange Haze. All BOO plants have orange smell from the Tangie genetics in it. They are all short indica type plants that would have been great for a hybrid. Plus this Tangie hybrid has more of the manufactured orange flavor that Tangie had. The one part of Tangie I don't like LMAO. We still need to see how it smokes.

As with the Haze leaning SSH. I guess I am going to just have to wait and see how things go. I really want to try and reverse a plant from regular genetics. One female from SSH will be regenerated. There is a chance the haze leaning pheno will be the one I choose. If not I have 2 other great looking plants that are budding lots faster. Like I said this is more to reverse and feminize a plant than any real breeding. I will save a plant or 2 from the best of the rest of the strains/plants left. If I am going to try and self one plant I would like to make a hybrid too if I can. There is a very good chance I am going to find a winner in one of the strains I have going. Boo and Banana Sorbet will be the strains I will be looking the hardest at.

I've grown a few Tangie crosses. All were good smoking erbs. My 24k gold is tangie x kosher kush. I've kept it for over a year now. Tangie is good one for crosses for sure
