Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

Buds are here!

Remember that Flo F-5 I thought was going to be male? I mentioned that it turned out to be female. Well it has been flowering all this time. I didn't want to risk a hermie moving it around to different light types and times. So I just let it continue to flower. Here is how it looks now.
Still a long way to go but at least it has started. I did confirm that there was a risk a hermie. I found one little flower on it yesterday. I am not positive what caused it but no more were spotted so all is well as of now. That may change.

Cool have fun. I just realized today I need to change things up again. I need a place to start more seeds to replace the ones in the big tent. My veg tent is pulling double duty right now. The plants in it are ready for the 4 x 4 tent. I just can't set it up quite yet.

Not a big deal. I have places to put everything. I just don't want to put it off much longer. The seedling are going to need at least a month under the T-5. Flower time with these strains should be over in 8 weeks or so.

I remember a time I had only one 400 watt HPS light. WOW how things have changed. I thought I had every light I may want. I was wrong. Well I have been thinking about getting just one more for a while. I have even bought new lights knowing I kind of need this one.

My first T-5 was a 4' with 8 bulbs. It worked great but was a lot more than I really needed. When it crapped out I went with a 4' 4 bulb unit. That works for everything I need it to but the small tents. I have 2 tents that are 36" wide. The 4' T-5 won't fit into them. Well I bit the bullet and got a small T-5. I wanted a 2' 4 light but ended up going with 2 2' 2 light ones. I can move these easier and it will still fit them in a 36" tent.

You all may think I have given up on my 1000 watt HPS. That is not going to happen for a bit anyway. I will be using one to flower the 4 x 4 tent. I have plenty of power at that end of the house. While I am going to use the hell out of the 630 watt CMH for veg. I think I better flower with the HPS.

One thing I have found while shopping for lights. There are better veg lights, there are cheaper lights to run. Still no one can flower quite like a HPS light. As long as I can use them I will. No problem changing when I do. I have every damn type of light they make for growing now LMAO.

I'm solely using QB's now. My R spec boards for flower do well for me. Especially with just two 320 watt fixtures in my 4'x8'. And my 4k 300 fixture does well in veg in my small tent. I still have two 1000 watt HPS lights on hand if I want to use them.

One and only downfall of HPS is the light bill :laughtwo: My setup is not perfect but it's getting me by on a budget. LMAO

That is the main reason I am changing things up. Trying to keep the bills down. The main reason I am thinking of flowering with the HPS is I seem to get better terpene development from it. Buds from the LED light were had similar THC percent, and firmer buds. They didn't have the flavor that the HPS plants did. Plus I have been using HPS start to finish. With the CMH I am going to get lots better veg growth. This should give the plants the light they want when they want it.

My biggest thing now is to figure out how to grow with the Timber lights. I think I understand why the lights need to be high and at lower settings during veg. It helps let the plant stretch out some. It seems if you don't the internodes pack themselves to tightly together. I am hoping I get a bit more stretch out of my plants in the next week or so.

If not no big deal. I think they will do fine. Branches are plenty strong. I don't even know how much support some of these plants are going to need. A couple of the Purple Afghani are budding already. They are starting as fast as Cinderella 99 we will have to see how fast they finish.

Here is a look at the big tent last night.
I used to pack my plants in a lot thicker than this. In fact I am thinking about moving the 3 other plants back. I will have to see how things go over the next few days. In fact the more plants the better for me. It is all I can do to keep humidity levels high enough. A few more plants would only help this. Everything is getting lots of light so I may just leave things as they are.

It is weird dealing with these shorter plants. I am doing so much at a early age to get them to bush out. They are just as old as my other plants where before. Just shorter and bushier. This time I am not going to lolly pop as much as I did before. With shorter plants I can get light to it all.

I started feeding the plants a little yesterday. Nothing is turning yellow yet but nutrient levels have to be going down in the soil. They may be short but there is a lot of plant mass to them. As long as this does not hurt them I will continue low levels of nutrients for a while. I don't think the Purple Afghani is going to want much food. I don't think Afghani's are heavy feeders. We will see. I am not going to try and push them with more nuits. All these plants are early finishers so If I am going to add nuits I need to get them in early.

Trichomes and smell have arrived on the Flo F-5. Smell is sweet, Not sure if it is going to become fruity or if it will have a blueberry smell. It is starting to frost up nicely though. From the looks of this plant it is going to be the hybrid I expected. Not a F-5 version of Flo. Laziness is the only reason I can think of that the strain information reads the same for Flo and the Flo F-5. As close as I can tell it is going to be a 50/50 hybrid. Blueberry is 80/20 Ind/Sat. and Flo is around 25/75 I/S . I am almost surprised the D.J. Short didn't breed his best indica and his best sativa before this.

Hey Dankman. How to your run the power output of your LED lights?

I was told by Timber to run the COB led's at 50% and 36" above the canopy for starts. 75% and 24"above the canopy for veg. Then finish at 18" on full power during flower. They didn't say when to go to full power. I am still wanting these plants to stretch out more. I am running at 75% and about 30" above the canopy now. From what I can tell. I have about the same amount of internodes. What is missing is the extra stem between the internodes. Vegging with a HPS light like I have been doing creates more internode spacing. I am thinking that the better light spectrum is why my plants are not 3' or 4' by now like normal.

I was planning on turning the lights to full power in another week. Does that sound about right to you?

Sounds about right

Honestly the newer DJ Short Flo and Blueberry are nothing like his earliest releases. I’d love to get an early release of Blueberry.

What is weird is they D.J. Short never discusses what he is doing with the genetics. To breed F-2 and on up. They need to be selecting certain plants for certain reasons. They had to have chosen each parent for certain trait. Either smell or frost they are choosing because of them. Of course it is going to change no matter what you do. The only way a strain will not change is to breed the exact parents over and over again. I don't think they can release the original anymore. I don't think they have the original parents anymore. Just lost of seeds from all D.J. early work.

I do believe Peaks seeds Blueberry is from D.J. Shorts old genetics. It may be worth a look, I don't know if he even carries it anymore. Even it would be a F-2.

It doesn't look like I will be moving plants back. The big tent is filling in fine. No use pushing things. We will see how thing develop in the next couple weeks.

Still weird flowering plants this short. Over the last few years my plants have been getting shorter and shorter. All the bending pinching and tying down has the most to do with it. Production has not changed much so it isn't a big deal. I may try doing things different on the next big tent grow just to check if I am doing things the way I want.

I am growing fewer plants that are a lot wider now. There is still a lot to be said for just topping plants and growing 4 main branches instead of 6 to 8 tops that I get now. We will see. I am going to have 2 different grow styles going. Or lights mostly. The big tent will stay with the LED light for now. The 4 x 4 tent will now mostly be for personal smoke and will be grown under HID light. I do plan to swap out the 630 CMH and a HPS light. Not sure what the wattage will be yet. Probably going to go with the 1000 watt. As I mentioned before the terpene profile seems higher with the HPS. Flavor does show up in the Timber grown plants. It just has to cure in with them. That is mostly because I couldn't trim out many sugar leaves the buds were so tight. At least that is my GUESS. It is also the reason I am working with light height.

A question. My growing is limited to outdoors and because I grow on a balcony I need to restrict their height to no more than 2.5 feet tall due to the neighbors who would otherwise see them (if they can't already smell them). Last grow I Quadlined, Supercropped and LST'ed them to achieve this. I still got 23oz from 3 plants of which the 2 photos grew for about 7.5 months up until harvest. But what I found was the branches grew long and unruly, so even though I had 1.5 - 2 foot colas on half the branch the other lower half seemed a waste of branch length that contributed to short but very wide plants. Your mention of 'pinching' which I understand to be either pinching off i.e. topping, or pinching as in squeezing/crushing like as in supercropping. I am thinking for my forthcoming grow (as soon as we get out of Winter here in NZ) that I will do the same training as last year but with the addition of incorporating 'pinching' (in a supercropping manner) for the sole purpose of holding back the excessive unwanted branch growth that I had last year which made working around the plants in limited space quite cumbersome and challenging.

Is that what you mean when you mention pinching? Just crush the branch stems wherever I want to hold back growth while it repairs itself. Does that sound right? I imagine if I do it to slow down branch growth, especially in stretching, that should help excessive lateral canopy growth. I pretty much only want the branches to grow colas/buds, if a branch can grow 1.5 - 2 feet of cola/buds at the end, then I don't want another 2 feet of wasted lower branch devoid of buds. Cheers.
