Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

Bohdi is out Katsu is in! One of the 3 new Katsu strains is going to have a major role in this next grow. If I am going to have to get rid of anything I want it to be something people will remember. Always before I just sold the lesser phenotypes of each strain. The plan now is to start less plants just for me and lots of plants of one certain strain. In time this will come from clones or selfed seeds. Till then I have to do it from seed form. I wanted something that produces enough to make it practical. The main thing is that is has lots of flavor and a noticeable high. All my friends know I love great weed. Very few know how I get mine. What is really funny. When I have got rid of weed before. I have had friends come share the new great weed they just bought. If I am going to produce something. I want it to be something that people want to show to others.

Here is what the choices were yesterday.
The New, Humboldt
Super Lemon Haze, Greenhouse
Blue Fire, Humboldt
Kushberry, DNA
ECSD x Romulan, Katsu

My other Katsu choices are, Putang x Burnt Toast, Og Kush x Burnt Toast. The Og hybrid like the ECSD is a feminized. That makes things easier. I lost 2 more Lemon Cheisel last night, back down to just one female of it. That makes female seeds more appealing.

It has been a busy year and fishing had to take a back seat to all the work on the house. So I have not did really well. I am actually going to head to a high mountain lake after big lake trout this AM. I hope I can change things up this fall. all the work is done except for windows. They came in and were wrong so I have to wait another month for them to show up. Might as well fish LOL.

It would be nice to find a keeper SLH. With my luck one will show up this time when I have other things going.

The Purple Afghani's are doing really well. We will see how they look after stretch. I don't expect much. All these plants are bushy strains. Normally they would be 3 foot tall by now. Bent and twisted they are closer to 2'. I figured it was time to show pictures of the 2 main phenotypes. I will start with plant #1. It has been different then the others from the start.
It is bushy enough that is for sure. We will see how much stretch I will get with the different lights.

Next up is the Afghani leaning phenotype.
It is hard to see the differences in a picture. I can easily see them in person. There is a third phenotype that is a mix of these 2. I didn't get a picture because if these 2 won't show the differences then adding another pic won't help LOL.

Both parents are mostly or pure indica. Both with wide indica leaves. That makes it a little harder to tell differences. In person the Afghani leaning leaves are not as wide as the Kush leaning ones. Leaf stems are also longer in the kush pheno. That should help open things up in flower.

In 2 more weeks I plan to remove the HPS light and go with 700 watts of Timber light. I know those lights pack on buds. We will see how much we lolly pop these plants. I may not do it this grow. If the plants stay short enough for light penetration. Then they should make solid buds all the way down the branches.

It is a bit late to mention. I just noticed, I went passed the 100 page mark for this journal not long ago. That is a lot of random bullshit! I know "me" pretty well. My guess it is kind of the same shit over and over again. Talk about, grow, photograph, and move on LMAO.

More pages talking about what I want to do and not near as may of what I am doing. At least I was up front from the start LOL.

Damn It! Kind of funny when you think of it. First time I saw the name Humboldt Seed Company. I knew it was trying to sound like Humbolt Seed Org. That way they could sell more seeds. When I was trying to find something to go along with a new strain I wanted. "might as well have them ship more than one strain at a time". I was getting a Crockett strain and wanted something to go with it.

Well I spotted the name Humboldt and didn't check which one. I am now testing a new breeder and a new strain LMAO. The California Diesel I am growing is a from the Seed company not the Seed org. I bought it only because I like HSO's Headband so much. Now instead of having half of what I know I like. I have a totally unknown strain.

Not to big of deal if I respected that breeder. The fact that they came up with a name so close to another company. I don't trust this company from the get go. Here is a great chance to prove myself wrong. I know what to expect from a ECSD x Headband hybrid. I should be able to see the parentage in it. Not only does this strain need to be good smoke. It needs to represent the hybrid as well.

Case in point. Blue Dream, from Blimp Burn and Gorilla Widow from Expert Seeds. They both were good plants. Smoke from them was also good. I didn't see the parentage I expected in them. The Blue Dream had a fake Blueberry smell. Nothing like I have seen from other Blueberry hybrids. It was also different then any Blue Dream I have grown before. Same with the Gorilla Widow. I could see some White Widow in it maybe, It had a fruity smell I think can come from the White Widow side. I didn't see any G.G. in it. All other G.G. hybrids I have tried had traces of the flavors in them.

While I was happy with the plants I grew. I won't be growing any strains from those 2 breeders again. I buy strains because of their parentage. I bought the California Diesel because I thought it was the offspring of HSO 707 Headband genetics. Not just the offspring. The offspring of HSO Headband. Breeders using different Headbands or different phenotypes to breed Headband are going to have a different outcome. I don't believe everyone has all these clone only genetics they say they have. So I am not expecting much from this strain. I could be wrong.

I'm skeptical of a lot of today's breeder's. Some make me wonder what if any testing they do. After my first breeding project I think I'll be sticking to my own creations and maybe breeder packs I already have stashed. I'm sure I'll buy seeds again at some point. But it's a shame to pay today's prices just to be disappointed.

Growing is all the rage at the moment. It's created lots of fly by night, watered down genetics imo

Greed is everywhere in weed these days. Not only the just with the jump on the band wagon marijuana seed breeders. Even older companies are adding so many new strain a year it is getting ridiculous. I can see 3 to 5 new strains a year. Some companies are putting out that much every couple of months. It is going to take a long time for growers to weed out all the useless genetics and breeders

It is funny how fast things can change. All I wanted to do was up-pot a few plants. The plants under the T-5 have grown into their 1 gallon pots pretty well. I wanted to give them plenty of time in the bigger pots to build a good root system before flower. Well that worked perfectly. That is also where things started going wrong LOL. The T-5 just can't cover the area with enough light to give all the plants enough light. I need to upgrade the light. Sounds easy right?

Nope just to add more light in one tent I had to redesign everything. The best light I have for the job is my 600 watt MH on half power. I can't run the 630 CMH as it is not adjustable. So to make it work I had to go full LED in the big tent. I had already planned to do this. Just not yesterday LOL. I wanted to get the plants passed the stretch stage before I did. Oh well this will give me a real time test on how well they work. That drops the wattage to 700 in the big tent. The plants look pretty happy under them.

I can now use the extra power in the veg tent. At least for a time. Once I have everything up and going this tent will have the T-5 and a Timber single light set up for auto flowers, mothers. I will be needing to set this tent back up with the T-5 light soon. After seeing how much bud those Timber lights can pack on. I know I want to spread the plants out pretty wide to give them lots of light all the way down the stems. To do this right I think it would be better to move 2 plants to a back up tent. That would put me back up to 900 watts in that room. By then I will be able to move the plants in the veg tent now so I can redo the lights. At least I am not bored LMAO.

Roll with the old school strains from the people who can verify what they have as real

Yes and no Pennywise. The way things are done these days. If you don't get a strain when it comes out it will never be made again. It took me 20 years to get the real Cinderella 99 after I decided I wanted it LOL.

There are some nice genetics coming from little known breeders. If you watch strains for a while you can see them popping up. If other people start using someones strain in breeding there has to be something to it. At least I think LOL. I will find out if I am wrong when I run the new Burnt Toast hybrids I have coming.

Yeah me too. Plus Katsu and Raw are not the only breeders working with Burnt Toast.

Which brings me to a thought I had yesterday. A good use for these new hybrids I am have is to cross them to older stuff I really like. Afgooie is one of the strains I am speaking of. It and Critical are both strains I have that I like, that are fairly strong. They could use a little boost to get to the outrageous side. Strains Like the Tropical Escape, "Burnt Toast F-1" and Banana Split, "Tangie F-1 hybrid". Might be perfect matches for them.

All my basically stable regular genetics are going to be used to pollinate the great strains I find. I had no use for the males from those same strains.

Looking at what is next in line reminds me of a bad cover band. I call it Bent and Twisted Ladies!
I am getting better at making plants do what I want them too. Kind of like training a dog. Some breeds learn faster then others LOL. These are going to be real interesting when they grow into the bigger pots.

Not just the new blood. Most of the plants got some kind of treatment yesterday. I moved 3 plants to the back up tent and spread the last few out wide. I don't know how tall they are going to get. At least everything will be getting good light.

The plants in flower got a bit different treatment. With them I mostly just tied down their limbs. As I was doing this I realized. I am kind of mixing supper cropping, bending, and quading a plant. Well not quads. I have more than 4 branches. As I am tying the branches out to the sides they look similar to what is done to quad plants. Except mine still have colas.
