Random Thoughts: Plants & Genetics

JD Short said the strongest weed he ever smoked was 12% THC.

Well I hope he is right LOL. After a lot of research I decided on the Flo F5 as the additional seeds. I still don't understand what it really is. Other then fast lol. It is a 7 to 8 week strain. D.J. Short calls it Flo F5 but it has Blueberry in it. At first I thought it was the Blueberry F5 he used. It wasn't. The hybrid was made with a Flo F-4 and a Blueberry F-4. Flo never had Blueberry before so how could this be a F-5 Flo. I picked it to grow because it was a hybrid of a sativa and a indica. They call the percentages the same as Flo was. 60/40 sativa. If you cross it with a indica dominant strain then that should have changed.

As long as the high is good it won't matter what it is percentage wise. I say I try to avoid strains lower then say 16%. I never know what anything really is. I just know if I like them or not. I do find it funny D.J. Short says that about low THC strains. I don't think he has a 20+ percent THC strain in his stable LOL.

Oh yeah that’s much better than riot. The Grimm glue sounds killer.

That is exactly what I thought lol. I won't be able to try it till mid winter. It has to wait a couple grows to make it into the line up. Now you can how easy it was for me to say "Sure I will test it" LOL. I really can't wait to see what happens with the Purple Afghani

Flo came from the same lines as Blueberry. The Flo is the Sativa line where Blueberry is the indica line.

Thanks for that info Pennywise. I knew everything D.J. had came from a few basic strains. I didn't know exactly how the lines went. I do now LOL. That helps a lot. I have all of them from the Flo side. The Temple Flo has a lot of interest for me also. I grew the F-13 years ago. It was one of the first totally different tasting hybrids I have grown. My father called it the only green weed he has smelled that wasn't skunky.

I still don't know why they didn't use a Flo male and female. I know there is a P-75 of Cinderella 99 that lets the mother plant carry most the traits. Maybe the F-4 Blueberry is similar to that.

The write up for Flo F-5 reads the same as the write up for Flo. They mention nothing about the Blueberry. From the sounds of it. The BB male did similar things as the P-75 male Grimm use's. I really hope there are hybrid traits as I already have C-99 going for daytime weed.

Of course one small thought keeps creeping in. I have wanted to cross C-99 and Flo since I smoke Flo last year. This could be the only time I have them both going at the same time. Pretty sure I will be waiting to grow a pure Flo first and then reverse it for pollen. There should be a male from the Flo F-5. Still pretty solid genetics. I think the cross of the 2 strains would make a pretty stable F-1 hybrid. I may just have to spread a bit of pollen if I really like a certain male for some reason.

Remember that S1 produces 25% more recessive genes from the female side of the cross. So if you want to explore that side of the lineage it might be an option.

Yeah I would trust the Grimm bros. He seems to like racy highs

The main reason I grew the Purple Afghani is because of that same reason. I am hoping to find something that is different then his other strains. Pretty sure that is one of the reasons he has me looking at it. I will know if it is just like the others. Grimm has yet to really nail the indica side. Even Killer Queen has lots of females on the sativa side of the spectrum.

That is kind of the same reason I am considering male pollen. Yes I am interested in what may happen in that 25% area. I also want the whole picture to be transferred. Female pollen can do a lot but it is still not a natural hybrid where more could happen. Still what that 25% from a S-1 does in a hybrid with another strain has to be considered.

I just need a place and time where I can look at lots of plants all at once. The way I do things, breeding with females is about the only way I can do things right. Everything else is just guessing about what the male will carry over.

True. That is another thing that gets in my way. I grow some strains enough to know them pretty well. I don't keep mothers so I never really get to understand what one female does.

Which creates my problem. My mind wants to grow as many strains as I can and it also wants to breed. The 2 don't really go together. I mentioned to another friend. It sucks to be so far away from the other growers I know. It would be great to just grow and find great pheno's. Then give clones out so the plants are not lost. That way I could just move on and look at other strains lol.

3 of the 4 Flo F-5 have popped and been planted. Still hoping the 4th pops. Which will bring me to male/female ratio's. I remember F-13 had lots of males because I only had 2 females of the whole pack. Second Generation's Clown Royal had one female out of 5 seeds. I really would like to see 2 females so I can see any differences. I would have started more seeds to be sure but I have a bunch of regular seeds going and I might get a high female ratio.

It looks like I am setting up the Flo F-5 for failure. Already stating what it is supposed to be. Pretty much love bashing D.J.'s kid I guess LOL. I do have to admit the one Clown Royal female I did get is pretty darn good. I would have to rate it as the best Gorilla Glue #4 hybrid I have grown yet. We all know he has REAL Blueberry. It was not to much of a reach that he would be able to find a great G.G. #4 in Oregon. They are surrounded by legal states so it could come from any of them.

So why am I taking it out on D.J. Short seeds? He is letting his kid do it. The kid is probably in his 40's so maybe "let" is the wrong word LOL. All new strains are brought out by Second Gen. All D.J. is doing is older genetics, no new hybrids. Pretty much creating no competition for true Blueberry hybrids.

I agree that his kid JD is a tool. DJ’s older stuff is still very good though. DJ Blueberry was mostly males as well. When sending cuts all you need is wet paper towel on the cut end. They will be wilted when you get them but just stick them in a glass of water for 12-18 hours and they will look like you just them. You can then root them how it works best for you.

JD is a Complete tool as a person. IMO but he's keeping dad's line going I guess. Seems dad has kinda lost his passion or not willing to compete with today's hype strains.

Jack I think you'll find a keeper of the Flo's I'm looking forward to seeing them
