Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

I make that comment cus the Old Lady' is after me to stain the fence... Seeing I bought the stain 3 years ago?? I wonder why shes bitching? Women.. But now the grow room, I'd use artists brush to whiten my walls. Reflection is 60% as good as direct. Sorry white is one of my pet peeves.... Makes a world of difference. She'll be after me today to get started,,, I be thinking. Oh well Keepem Green

Your point about reflective white is well made!

In the veg area, my plants are next to the white brick wall and 2 feet away from the unpainted wood.

In the flower area, I was running 75-100W per sq ft of HPS light. It didn't seem like reflection was going to be an issue. Since I replaced one of the HPS with (lower wattage) COBs. It's probably more important.

Planting an UltraDawg seed

I needed a replacement for the male Tangerine Widow, so 2 days ago I started an UltraDawg seed. Today it was ready to plant.

20170718_174302-1.jpg

I took an egg sized clump of sphagnum peat moss and made a little seedling spot in the middle of the soil.

20170718_174120-1.jpg

I set the pot in a tub of water to soak , and made up a tag and a file card to track the nutrient schedule.

The newly cracked seed went into the peat moss spot in the pot.

I arrange my file cards on the bulletin board to reflect their physical location - these are my 6 strains in early veg.

Hey BlazinJones and Bobrown.

You guys were working well together.

I have tons of respect for BoBrown14 - what he knows, what he grows, how helps folks out, how he understands Living Organix Soil (LOS.)
I have a lot of respect for BlazinJones - In that he listened to BoBrown14, and seemed to have a real knack for LOS - I didn't. I need more rules than the kind of observational green thumb that seems to do well with LOS.

I figure if BlazinJ is going to come blazin', he'd best come Blazin' for me - So don't y'all nevermind so much and be forgiving.

I'll say I'm sorry for my part.

I'm sorry.

All kinds of ways to start seeds and start clones. Take yur pick :)

I like seeds in water until they crack then into soil - no need to let the tail (root) grow long on a paper towel.

For me, no reason to plant a seed until I know for sure it has started to sprout.

The egge sized patch of cspm is just a way to protect the baby root from nute burn, yet not have to transplant into soil.

I like to soak my seeds in a container with a lid. I've spilled seeds when soaking in a shotglass.

Thanks for following along !

I took some pictures right after lights out a couple turned out OK.

CBD Critical Cure - 35 Days in flower, 48" tall

Not only does she seem to be a Sativa leaning phenotype, she has added a drake tail curl to some of the fan leaf tips.

20170719_224719-1.jpg

I've seen this leaf tip curl once before, on BoBrown14's Devil's Tit. They have no genetics in common.

Carnival - 63 days in flower, 44" tall

Pistils are just starting to turn. I'm waiting to see if the second round of cat drenches adds any frost

My twister is weird like that. Sometimes the clones will go back to opposite branching. Kind of neat really.

Doesn't the opposite branching have something to do with when the clone was cut?

If the plant in VEG is still going opposite branching, the clone should do the same??? The every other branching thing I'm thinking is a sign of plant maturity I.E. getting ready to flower. Clones from that will go every other out of the gate.. Not sure if that is "always" true tho.

I don't think it matters much in the long run... just a "possible" explanation for that. Plants with every other branching ... that's a sign of maturity (ready for flowering) so once we see that happening, we can go to flower if we want to with the clones even if they are short.

Rad congrats on yet another nice haul. VERY cool to hear the fam is happy! hahahahaha nice and :high-five:

Looks like you got it rocking, frost in July in Chicagoland.. beautiful site. Stay out of the way of that bad weather... :Namaste:

Cheers

Edit: Oh hey I see you have a few plants with the curly tips... I have that on one strain I'm running (Devils Tit) is there a reason for that happening?? I'm not concerned cause my DT is my personal stash and VERY good... if sign of quality, not surprised!!

I remain always curious ....

I am so envious of your plants Rad. :hugs:

Today was a bit frustrating in the garden

My digital timer for the flower area failed.

I disassembled it and poked around. Nothing looked damaged, everything works except the switching on and off part.
I purchased a manual timer as a replacement.

1 of my 4 veg area grow tubes failed

I still have 3 of 4 T5 HO tubes lit, but the others are probably close to failing. I need to order lights. They don't carry 4' T5 HO in my local big box stores.

My UltraDawg seed failed to grow.

I dug up the seed and it had the same length root as when I planted it a few days ago. It was discolored. When I watered the seed the root snapped off.

Don't be envious of my plants. Your tiny closet girls look great.

I'm a little worried you might be vegging yours too tall. Most of my girls at least double their height in the stretch. Double 27" plus 12" for the pot is 5' 6" tall. Is there more flowering supercropping in your future?

If you know the strain, and can asssume it won't stretch too far - go for it!

I don' trust typical digital timers. I've heard too many stories about gremlins and failures.

And about the fluorescents - remember that they fade over time. The other 3 are probably pretty dim and you haven't noticed.

Sorry about your sucky Saturday. :Namaste:

I'd never trust a digital timer period. Leason learned...... Most lights recommend against digitals. So I've never used them. I do hear of people using lesser lights using them, and for timers on pumps for hydro,, but those intermatic timers,,, I'm still using the first I bought.... I guess I'm just cheap. But even in my flower room I'm using a intermatic timers built into a powerstrip. 8 plugs,,,,4 plugs on each side. 4 on the timer,,,4 on 24/7.. Cost under 20 bucks off E-B-y.. I have to say this,,, one of the main reasons a hydro fails is bad timers.... But then most use a digtal... I can call it... GL and Keepem Green

Wow! You just built your new grow room.

First grow and you already got the conditions dialed in?

Chit it seems like your were just breaking holes in your wall to make room for ventilation.

Great job Rad! I don't know why i am so surprised. Probably because I have seen so many good growers struggle in new rooms.

I hate loosing seeds. I have lost two in the last week. Thats the game tho. Better now than 11 weeks in, right?

Bummer day. :hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs:

The Carnival in the closet will be able to drop down as she stretches. I have her lifted. It's the DC that has me concerned. I may give her 'till the end of the week and flip them a week earlier than I'd planned. The DC is gonna push to the lights no matter what I do. I'm not sure how I'm gonna make it happen, but things always work out for me.

Cut the side out of a rubbermaid tub and prop her diagonally... Just an idea :)

I actually tried to get her diagonal mouser, and the pot's too big to get back into the tight spaces off to the sides. If I could do that she'd be a wonder for sure. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Hey, I'm going to cut off the bottom branches when she gets flipped. Would you be interested in a clone?

lol Every part of me is screaming YEAH!!! :cheertwo: But I really have no room at the moment...Ive actually gone way over the no more room point and still have 2 Purplr Haxe and 2 Blue Cheese clones coming in. O.O So, thank you very much for the offer, but I must decline. If others are interested, I can send you a few more of those neat shippers though.

Just found out on Grizz' thread that I missed NH decriminalizing up to 21g last week. Not legal yet, but a HUGE step :)

Sweet! A step in the right direction. Pa went with a limited list of "qualifying conditions" and left out the right to grow, but what they'll find out when they get up and running is the demand will far exceed their projections. One step at a time mouser. We're closer to the tipping point every day. Once California goes full legal in January it's going to completely change the game.

If I hear of any requests for clones I'll let you know. :hugs:

Rad,
have you ever noticed slow starting seeds equal stunted growth? Or vice versa?

Gauge

I can tell you it doesn't always work out like that in my garden Guage. One of my slowest starters is the Dark Devil Auto, and I've harvested between 2 and 4 ounces off every one but the two runts. Every once in a while you do get a runt.

+1 on intermatic timers (Intermatic P1131)... I did just burnt up my first one but took me 2 years .... the digital ones.. meh, they suck. Just sayin...

The P1131 is a 20amp timer and must be sure its grounded (don't ask me why ... something to do with the failure of my 1st one)! :lot-o-toke:
operator error.

The timers take a pretty big hit at lights on... large inrush current for a very very short time.

Rad - Sorry about the little one... better to have it fail now than later.

On the fence with regard to female male cannabis. Woody is right all dicots have both female and male genetics...that I do know and also there's 20% chance to get both sexes on the same plant... With the Exotic gear I've been getting 80% ... nanners on most of the plants but it happens very early shortly after female flowers start forming, I've been getting nanners down low on the laf. Trim the LAF problem solved. Do get a few seeds from time to time and nanners.. not just from Exotic gear either.

It's genetics and its still being researched... like humans. Some of us are born with both bits.... why we have all that weird bathroom shit going on in schools nowadays. We are finally starting to realize there's a few more folks (and plants) that are both male and female than what was believed... errrr or talked about. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Hermaphrodites have rights too, just not in my gardens. Sorry you have to use the bathroom out by my compost bin, and don't let the cover hit you in the roots on your way in. problem solved and problems avoided!

I built a new basement grow room using equipment previously used in the old basement grow room - so less stuff to get used to than some.

I built because I'm a bit too cheap to buy tents :)

High Temperature:
In the flower area, I control excess heat with a 6" fan and a thermostatic switch. In the veg area, I depend on low watt lights and ambient temperatures.

Low temperature:
Both area have space heaters when temperatures get too low.

Low Humidity:
In the winter, I add humidity to the veg area with a big (3 gallon?) humidifier. In the flower area, I depend on humidity leaking in from veg and a large tray of perlite under the plants that collects the overflow from watering.

High humidity:
The veg area has a small dehumidifier. The flower area has had 3 whole house dehumidifiers so far, none of them work well but the one in there now helps a lot.

I was tinkering with one of the other dehumidifiers yesterday, I believe it is extremely low on refrigerant. It doesn't seem to ever have been used, so it might have a bad leak from the factory.
