Radogast's Hi-Brix Basement Grow - New Location - New Soil - New Experiences

Yup. Get the soil tested! :circle-of-love: I'm happy to do it.

Fish emulsion I use for younger plants and dilute it heavily with filtered water. Water in .. I do not follow the label recommendations. My grow space would smell like a fish stand if I did. So maybe 3 times in the grow cycle but early.

Fish emulsion is not my go to... I prefer worm castings & ground up re-hydrated kelp meal... again both diluted heavily in filtered water.

I suggest you get yourself some decent COBs and drivers, to replace your 2x600W you are looking somewhere around 700W that's around 650 dollars. For 2x4 you would need around 300W and that's 6 COBs at 50W. So 6x 3000K/3500K Vero or Citizen CLU1818 that's around 25$ a piece so 150$ plus the driver for 120$ and you need some cooling that's another 70$. That's my uneducated guess and you might find the parts cheaper. But it should pay itself quite fast. Heck I've paid 250 just for my chips (CLU1825) :) I also recommend adding UVB bulbs/tubes for peak hours as all LEDs lack the UV spectrum. The cheap drivers and COBs are not worth it IMHO. This array should last you 10+ years if cooled enough. :thumb:

Vero29s I'm running at ~100w/cob and depending on power supply can go higher... NO HEAT or very little. Impossible to generate light without heat.. its a physics thing.

So say a 4 COB array will be very similar to a 600w HID but a SHIT TON LESS heat. Not there "yet" with the light intensity but for what we do; indoor hobby grow..good.

COB tech has improved a lot. It's only getting better ... Now all I have to do is swap COBs for $30 a pop to upgrade in a few years!
HID bulbs ... ouch.

I'm startring to dabble in organic/hopefully high brix this go round...do you have thoughts on differences between emulsions and hydrolysate fertilizer/cold pressed fish products? my product doesn't confirm either/or, so I assume its emulsion...also have a kelp product(liquid)...so, that's encouraging!...mixed a batch of soil today that included...Promix HP...EWC...potting soil with myco...blood meal...bone meal...blood meal...gypsum...and glacial rock dust...humic acid was also added to water for wetting, for the cooking...would appreciate any thoughts by You...Doc...or any organic grower...cheerz!...h00k...:hookah:

Graduation Day AK47

AK47 clone was unruly in veg, and I want my soil in a few weeks, so I gave AK47 a trim and sent her into flower.

Increased plant count

I've decided I want to try going from 4 to 6 plants in the existing flower area

For a plant count, I'm going to try 6 plants in early veg and 4 plants in late veg(big pots), to feed 6 plants in flower.

With 4 late veg plants in big pots, instead of 2, the space is a tighter, so I may have to buy more 7 gallon Geopots or 12x12x12" plastic pots to replace 10 gallon GeoPots. The 10 gallon SmartPots I have are just too big.

As far as space, that's my only change required.

- - -

Last night, I watered 4 1/2 plants before I ran out of 7-8 gallons of Reverse Osmosis (RO) water that I had stored in buckets.
With more big pots in use (10 instead of 6-8) I need to store up more water.

My RO unit only has a 4 gallon tank, so it takes 2 fillings a couple hours apart to store up 8 gallons.

I'd like to have a 15-20 gallon reserve of water, preferably a tank that automatically refills off the 1/4" RO water line.

I'd like to have a water wand and hose on the barrel to help with the watering.

I can probably get a free rain barrel from the city.

Any ideas?

I like the way you're thinking with the water and hose. I have no idea at the moment how it would be put together, but having a water reservoir with away to water directly from it would be awesome. Just need to add some top water with the drench added in. I think I'm going to go with something like this when I set up my new grow room.

I need to find big square pots like doc uses. That would help space considerations in your veg area. I picked up a dozen half gallon square ones that fit perfectly, 8 to a plant tray and it really helped fit them in nicely when they are small. I have to think the 7 gallon ones would be the same once the plants graduate to the large pots in the veg area.

Thanks for all the thoughts and ideas for the COB kits.

And yes, Keltic, your fans are a bit goofy but you have almost no height in your tent so it makes perfect sense.

I have basic home wiring skills and have built a few PCs - back in the day - including gluing heat sinks, so I'm not scared of the DIY part.

With Doc Bud's kit and existing lights, I'm getting a good yield per plant. I also about to increase from 4 plants in flower to 6 plants in flower. For me, with lights, It's about saving money without losing performance.

I've got research to do...

I'm running the Timber 3K VERO29 COBs... NO heat with no fans... and my VEG room exploded with 6 of the VERO29 COBs @ 3K temps.

Go over to Timbers website and start looking around. Dan will usually hit you up with a chat window and will be glad to answer your questions.

I just got done chatting with him about another order! There's some new stuff coming. I was looking at my electronics supply shops website and the VERO29 COB chips. By the time I order everything ... have to assemble ... prolly only save a hundy or 2 at best, and then I have to build them... not that I dont like buiding electronics... I do, just this time of year there's a shit ton of gardening going on and compost is my .... wait 2nd love.. behind my one and only...

I'm happy giving Timber the extra coin I'd save. Super professional packaging/everything... I'm a repeat customer and will be back again soon for more. What I like is he knows his shit and actually does test grows to back up the science. Gotta love that!

KB's fans prolly over kill (not dissing) - I have the same heat sinks without a fan on them and they are not even warm to the touch and my super insulated enclosed VEG room is perfect temps ... even when outside temps were in 90 with RH thru the roof. Just the usual fans in the grow space is working for me ...so far!

Dr Hook... do you have a journal with your organic test grow?? Link me up... I'll tag along.

Makin soil is the deal with organics. Output only as good as input; "get your compost dialed in and the rest will follow." LD/CC

It's not as hard as it sounds! Did that sound like work? Sorry, its not. :thumb:

Rad and everyone.. for watering, there's a pretty good solution: rain water ... rain barrels attached to your down spouts.

Same or better than RO water since there's less waste and you are helping your local water company. Instead of rain water going down the drain and then needing to be put thru the cleaning... water in for the win. Our local water company supplied and installed ours free. 1 rain 50 gallons and when the barrel is full it bypasses and same as usual. Makes me wanna keep the rain gutters clean!

We use both RO water and rain barrel water. Gotta say loving the rain barrel. Just have to carry water... that sucks. With RO water I have to carry it too. Water puts the "W" in work. All good.

Sub'd for flowers! :Namaste:

You are 100% right. no problem at all. My fans are more of a whim. I have to see how it goes through the summer.
My space is small and can heat up quick but still they are cool to the touch now. My plan is exact over killing with the fans. They are not needed but to produce light you get heat so I am just helping the keep the cob a tiny bit cooler In hope of extending its life.

What's up Radogast..

I sure do love me some bubbas gift.. One of the first strains from my first grow.. That strain is on my redo list, the first grow was ruff. :thumb: You have some nice looking ladies so I'm going to strap on my seat belt and enjoy the ride..:thumb:

Don't expect to see all the frost I see over in your grow - you are really rocking your 8oz Monthly Harvest grow :)

Do you happen to recall how long you left Bubba's Gift under the flowering lights? I'm half expecting to harvest tomorrow and half expecting to harvest in 2 weeks. I don't have anyone ready to move into flower for a couple more weeks, so I can wait her out as long as some of the trichomes are clear.

Thanx for the compliments Radogast.:thumb: The frost isn't everything and that bubbas gift has something special that breeders hunt for... Extremely flavorful terps. She made my tent smell like a grape swamp..

I cut mine at 7 weeks but if she was healthier I would have let her go longer.. She might get a little over ripe with 9 weeks but I like the over powering couch lock effect. It slows my mind down and helps me relax.. You could always harvest the tops and continue flowering the lower growth. I've never tried this my self but it sounds like a good compromise for your situation..

Bubba's Gift has a nice aroma in flower to be sure - my nose stops processing it after about 30 seconds.

I looked at the buds today - no new pistils. At 53 days, I think she is headed for the finish line.

20170510_101648-1.jpg

The HPS and the camera make this look cloudy to almost amber, which is my preferred indica dom harvest point.
My eye says 50% clear / 50% cloudy.

Because I haven't been able to get a good clone, I'm planning to harvest the top 2/3 and try to reveg her to get a clone. If the quick dry bud is a favorite on harvest day, I may take the whole plant and pay for some more seeds. This plant has had me more confused than any plant in a long time :)

Those are the pics that drive me nuts!:loopy: Is that amber? Or is it the lights? Cloudy or just out of focus?

The silver lining of PM forcing me to harvest is that I didn't have to go through that this time.

edit: I was going to call you crazy for saying your buds weren't frosty enough, but that isn't actually what you said, and then I checked out Twox's grow and I see what you mean. Still, she's an impressive girl sure to please! Hope you find that harvest sweet spot. :high-five:
