Princess Second Northern Lights Grow - All Welcome!

Re: Princess second northern lights grow-all welcome!

It can take 3 days for the seed to pop after it's been planted in the soil. Keep the soil moist and in a warm place under strong light (a couple of inches from your CFL).

Don't worry about the seed popping out. That won't hurt it. I've dropped my current seedling twice and it's fallen out of the pot and I've had to repot it twice. It's none the worse for wear, but it's kinda pissed off at me for being so careless!

Re: Princess second northern lights grow-all welcome!

But I thought seeds like it dark until they sprout?

They do. That's why you cover them up if you use the cup or paper towel method.

After the taproot has emerged, the seed is looking for warmth and light to grow towards. You bury the seed to protect the taproot from too much light exposure, but the stem and leafy part of the seed is drawn toward the light.

It's like when you cover your eyes with your hands and look at the sun. Even though your eyes are covered, you can still sense the light and warmth of the sun. It will actually penetrate your hands and you can see a warm red color behind your eyelids. The sun doesn't burn your eyes but you know it is there.

The seed is the same way. The "sun" doesn't burn the taproot because it is covered in soil, but enough light and warmth gets through so the seed knows it is time to grow and penetrate the soil to get closer to the light.

So im not quite sure whats wrong with these seeds but the taproot sort of dies quick. not quite sure what im doing wrong but the seed case is like so wet it can literally crack right open but the taproot doesnt move or uncurl or do anything. im kind of confused.

Re: Princess second northern lights grow-all welcome!

i read this

Sprouting
Seeds should sprout within a few days; when they do, they must be transferred to the medium with great care when the taproot has come out about 1/4" to 1/2". I find that a 1/2" tap root seems to be the best. When it's much shorter, they tend to get shocked and die easier, and if it's much longer, there's more risk of damage.

Authors: Locutus and LoneStar
and im wondering when i put the seeds in soil their not 1/2 their more like barely peaking through the shell. could it be i am killing them by putting them in soil too early? cause the taproot wont grow and then the shell just pops off.

Re: Princess second northern lights grow-all welcome!

How did you germinate the last seed? Paper towel or tea cup of water?

If you did the paper towel method, you should think of switching.

Let me know and I'll walk you trhough it the next seed. They should germinate unless there's some seriously wrong with them.

Re: Princess second northern lights grow-all welcome!

i did paper towel before but now i have two, one mystery and one northern light seed soaking in seperate cups

I'm glad you're tying the cup method! Make sure to keep the cup covered so no light get in. Keep it in a warm place as well. I use my veg room and the water in the cup feels tepid or lukewarm. It shouldn't feel cold or too warm.

Wait until the taproot emerges - this usually takes two days, then plant about 1/4" into soil. If you remember from my previous post, before you use the soil, pour hot water throught the soil to hydrate and compact it. After it cools down, poke a small hole in the soil with a chopstick or a pencil, put the seed in and cover it lightly with soil. Don't worry if the taproot is facing down. If you can get it to face down, all well and good, but don't worry if you can't. The seed will germinate regardless.

Place the covered seed under your CFL about 4" away from the light. The room should be warm as well. In two days, three at the latest, the germinated seed should break the surface.

The seed I recently germinated took two days for the taproot to emerge and two days to pop out of the soil.

P. S. Where did you get the mystery seed?

Re: Princess second northern lights grow-all welcome!

I have 15 of nirvanas mystery strains.

Oh, yeah, I remember you talking about the mystery seeds and how nobody knows what they are.

If the current seeds don't germinate, I'm going to suggest you throw the remaining seeds into your backyard. Maybe when you wake, one of the seeds will rise to the heavens like Jack and the Beanstalk!

Seriously, with two seeds, you should get at least one winner.

I would leave then under the lights for longer then you think. I planted one after germination and it didn't pop after a week and I couldn't find it in the soil. After two weeks the little Guy popped up and if I would have noticed earlier he could have been saved.

Wow, two weeks! Amazing. I can't believed it sprouted after all that time. If a seed hasn't popped by the third day, I usually cheat and gently remove the top layer of soil to see how it's doing. If there is no change from when I've planted it, it's probably a dud.

Usually I can see the start of the stem growing toward the surface and I gently cover it back up. A few times, I've found the seed struggling to break the surface and I make sure it is not buried too deep or that the soil is not compacted about it. If this is the case, it always emerges with a little bit of encouragement.

is the taproot/tail out and long enough to be planted?

Re: Princess second northern lights grow-all welcome!

Yes, it's long enough, Princess.

Remember to put the soil in a pot, pour boiling water over it to sterilize and compact the soil. After it cools down (takes about an hour), punch a 1/4" hole in the soil with a chopstick or something and place the seed inside. Then cover gently with soil. Don't tamp the soil down, just cover the seed completely.

Place the pot under the CFL and keep it warm and moist. The seed should pop in two to three days. The soil should feel damp and springy on the surface, but not soggy. When the soil starts to feel dry, use an aerosol spray to mist the soil above the seed.

Remember to be careful moving the seed from the cup to the pot. Seeds are sneaky little devils and will try to slide out of the cup. Either pour the water from the cup through your hand or carefully pour the water out of the cup until it's empty, thyen gently pick up the seed and place it in the hole you made in the pot.

Seeds are not that fragile and you can pick it up with your hand. I've done it lots of times when a seed has fallen into the wrong place in the pot I'm using. A couple of times I've accidentally dropped a pot containing a seed and had to search among the soil to find it and repot it.

As long as you're gentle with the seed, it will be fine. After all, seeds don't always have someone as nice as you to plant them and can be manhandled (I mean, womanhandled) a bit without any ill effect.

Re: Princess second northern lights grow-all welcome!

Yay! i popped her in the soil i cant wait. The other two mysteries are still germinating but im sure those will do fine because i read seeds (when soaked) if they sink to the bottom then their good seeds. dont know how reliable that is but both mystery seeds sank to the bottom after only an hour so im thinking those will do fine :)
