Nah man. I suppose if you do enough burps you could go by touch as well if you're on a budget.
They only get opened now and not spread out on the table. So when the outside gets to be a bit moist I keep the jar open for anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours. (Left some out over night because I forgot about them. Didn't have any complaints). When the outside because crisp to the touch, almost like bread when you leave it on the counter, but then clue in and remember to put it away. It's barely crisp to the outside and still good. That's when I seal the jar up for the day or so.
You don't really need gauges or humidity packs. But it sure takes all the guess work out of it. And gives you a good idea of which point of the cure you're at.
