Perpetual Pics

I've been keeping the exhaust fan on max 24/7. While the room is not air tight, it has a negative pressure. I can put my nose right up to the exhaust outlet and still can not detect a "garden" smell. The problem with moving the acoustic tile is that it will leak light from the other rooms. A person could lag into the joists and suspend wires, chains, or whatever then seal around to keep the light out.

I'm thinking just going for a 4' x 8' tent with eventually 2000 watts of HID, later down the road going to LED. Easy peasy.

Looks like I have five ripe Blue Bloods. This is my project for today.

Well, it finally happened. The bane of all indoor growers-spider mites!

Yesterday after noon I went down to stoke the wood stove. While I was down there I decided to check on the veg tent. I was mainly concerned with the newly planted clones still in there that were set the day prior. Everything looked in order. The day before I had watered the mothers, removed dead leaves, and did a general look see.

Imagine my shock and horror when I noticed my Northern Lights X Skunk way in the back of the tent. The tops of her leaves look "white". I was thinking powdery mildew. I pulled her out for a closer look. I removed one of the "white" leaves and turned it over. Mites. I could see the little [insert swear words of your choice] with the naked eye. In the wood stove she went.

So then I begin pulling out every plant. There's a lot of them. Luckily the only plant that had any mites on it was my BC God Bud mother. More cleansing fire. At that point I was in a near panic. Then I recalled about a year ago JJ Bones gave me a product called Spider Wipe. I mixed some of that up at 2-3X strength and sprayed everything down. Didn't seem to hurt the plants so I'm going to repeat the application this evening. One thing that surprised me is that the HGK's weren't affected. I've read that The OG #18, one of Holy Grail Kush's parents, is a real mite magnet. So far I on lost the strain BC God bud. Oh well.

I know of growers that have had to stop growing because of mites. I've spent thousands of hours building up to where I currently am. I don't want to go out like that. This is my first personal experience with mites. I'm shocked how they seemed to "magically" appear overnight. I'm guessing they hitched a ride on some fire wood. Then I transmitted them into the veg tent. I didn't look in on the flowering girls. I'll be inventing new expletives if I do.

:Namaste:

I think I'm winning the war versus the spider mites. On day two of the invasion I trimmed up the mother plants. Heck-they needed it. No enemy forces detected.

I took every plant out and inspected it. Only signs of enemy presence were noticed on two Northern Lights x Skunk #1 clones. That was the strain where they were first noticed. I mixed up another "hot" dose of Spider wipe and literally wetted the entire room and tent paying special attention to the under sides of the leaves.

No I have to say so far I am impressed by the Spider Wipe product. The two clones that had mites where wetted down and set aside for approximately 5 minutes while I was tending other plants. When I re-examined all the mites appeared dead. Hopefully this will be the only thing I need against these terrorist insurgents. The Spider Wipe is organic and safe for foods. The active ingredient is derived from rosemary. If it works then great but I still have my fingers crossed.

Death to all pest!

You know I'm watching you closely Josh. Our new Soda Pop Pot Perpetual Grow is coming along nicely...

Well, I'm still on my toes, but it's sure looking like I am mite free. I haven't seen any signs in nearly two weeks. I've been holding rooted clones in quarantine in the veg tent as a precaution. With no indication of spider mites I've been moving them into flower. I still have my fingers crossed.

So here's my first Skunk x Haze I'm about to harvest.

In my experience the Botanicare Kind really leaches the nitrogen out of the leaves. With the high leaf to calyx ratio of Sativas, this is going to make trimming a pain. What I consider excess yellowing is one of the reasons that I want to switch it up. Most folks will recall that former sponsor that made nutrients down in Louisiana. With his stuff I'd never get a yellow leaf-not even on old fan leaves.

I'm still not sure what route I'm going to take. For now I'm just going to stick to what I'm doing as I'm very poor at the moment. I'll try tonight to get some picks of my Kerala Krushes. They seem to be coming along nicely. I've never grown the strain before and am not that familiar with Sativas but I believe they are still, at minimum three weeks out.

I consider myself a relatively patient person but I am nearing my whits end concerning these spider mites. While they have yet to be a huge problem, been diligent with the flowering girls, they are still in the veg tent.

I started out using "hot" mixes of Spider Wipe (Rosemary extract is the active ingredient.) going with the recommended once a week application. That seemed to work. I also basically Bonsai-ed the mothers. Then I spent a lot of time researching. Found out that females lay eggs every three days in temps over 80 F. So the once a week application is not enough.

That also hi lights another issue for me. Our main source of heat is a wood stove, in another room, but about 12' from the veg tent on the other side of a wall with only one side sheet rocked. Temps have been anywhere from -10 to 40 F for the lows during the last month. I have to keep that wood stove going but with my current set up it's impossible to keep the veg tent cool and the rest of the house warm.

Through my reading and youtube watching I learned that a person wants a two or three pronged attack against the mites. This is the point that I should mention that I haven't worked steady in nearly six months. Times are pretty tough at the moment. I return to part-time work in a month. I just have no money at the moment. So that got me thinking...

We have a bottle of Tempo SC Ultra made by Bayer. The label says that it can be used in food handling facilities so I did a bit of research on it. I guess it contains synthetic pyrethrums as the active ingredient. Research says it's fine for ornamental plants and is non-photo toxic. I know a lot of the commercial mmj mite products are made from the same or very similar products. So I bit the bullet and used it. That was only on veg plants-not on buds.

That seemed to do the trick...until today. Mites, mites, mites. :bitingnails: Ugg. So I raided the piggy bank and went shopping at the three agriculture supply houses in town. These aren't hydro shops but where farmers go. The only product I found that I felt safe with was some aerosol foggers made with a different synthetic pyrethum. I turned off all the lights except one 23 watt flouro tube, opened up the tent and set it off. I have all my fingers crossed.

In a few hours I'll go and check the results. I really, really don't want to loose my Holy Grail Kush Pheno. If this course of action doesn't work out I can only see one other route minus starting all over. That would be to mix up some Spider Wipe, dip new clones in it, hope the best for them as they are isolated in another part of the house, and kill the mothers. The mothers are starting to get root bound and could use replacing. But I don't have enough soil less mix to do that.

I'm just hoping that the foggers do the job. I need to be cloning if I'm going to keep running perpetual. Sorry if that was venting...just really frustrating. If anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it. Maybe I'll try to beg my wife to buy me some Azamax. Anyone ever use it or know of a more effective product?

Take 5 gallon bucket and fill with water. Take large lantern battery. Rip apart. Take out the positive and negative electrical nodes. Now take old 2 prong cord. Wrap positive wire around the positive node u removed and negative wire around negative node you removed. Place both on opposite sides of bucket. Slowly add salt until positive node bubbles. After 45 min remove nodes and add a little dawn soap and you have created mighty wash. Don't plug wire into outlet it's just there to suspend. Salt is roughly a tbsp

I have used Monterey Garden Insect Spray with Spinosad and Monterey All Natural 3 in 1 Garden Insect Spray to kill spider mites. I add 3-5 drops per gallon of Ivory Liquid Soap as a surfactant to help the spray stick to leaves and stems better. I spray every 3 days alternating the 2 Monterey products for 2 weeks to kill adults and larvae as they hatch. Sierra Natural Sciences also makes 2 products to kill spider mites SNS-217C Concentrate and SNS-209 Systemic Insect Control.

For now the mites are at bay. Setting off the aerosol foggers seemed to the trick. I took clones yesterday from my five remaining strains: Holy Grail Kush, Royal Purple Kush, Northern Light Blue, Blue Blood, and Northern Lights #5 X Skunk #1. As a precaution I dipped each clone completely in Spider Wipe. Next week I'm going to order some SNS-209. I like the systemic approach. I'm still doing more research. I want to get two more products with different active ingredients. Most likely it'll be a Neem oil based product along with a synthetic pyrethroid.

I never realized how prevalent spider mites are. I've been growing non-stop indoors for over two years now and have never had a single issue. Apparently I was just lucky. From now on I'm going to fight them pro-actively. Seems to be so much easier to keep them out versus treating an infestation-even a small one like I had.

Not sure if anyone noticed the lack of Skunk #1 X Haze from my current strain list. I decided to get rid of it. I sat down the other day and smoked four straight bowels of it and didn't feel a thing, nothing. It doesn't have much of a taste even though is smells like spicy-Haze. I decided it doesn't have a place in my garden.

I found out the other day that I'm returning to part-time work Jan 5th instead of the 19th as I previously thought. Sometimes it takes three weeks until I get the first check. At any rate things are going to be changing, slowly but surely, in the grow room. I've put hundreds of hours of thought and research into just what I'm going to do. I think I finally have a game plan. It's going to take a while. I have a lot of more pressing bills to deal with. But my hopes are by the time June rolls around there will be some jealous folks.

I just looked in. You have been using products to get rid of mites that are going to negatively effect the end product. Check out products that have spinosad as the active ingredient. I think King John mentioned one... get the concentrate, much cheaper.

Good Luck!!

I was going to also recommend the Monterey Spray with Spinosad, but I did not know if they would work on mites. Seems like KJC and Buck have had success with those tiny hellbeasts. I can only say that it wiped out a multi-plant Thrip infestation in one single day. Eradicated them -- No burnt pistils, no crispy leafs. Best pest product I've ever used in the garden, and it's not exorbitant - I paid 33$ for a quart at the local hydro, and have tons left.

Congrats on the work thing, and I hope you get to build your new space according to plan! :cheertwo:
