To Water Daily or Not?

So lets give you a little run down of my deal here. I run Coco and drain to waste on automatic timer feed. I have been feeding daily with a little excess. So the pots never get dry. I have run a few plants through in this fashion and when I check the roots after harvest I really am not getting the roots I feel I should. I am growing very well don't get me wrong but I just think I could gain even more with better roots.

So do you think it is true that if you let them dry out some in between waterings the roots will search for water and grow more robust. Thus taking in more of the water in the feedings. Thus better results.

Has anyone out there played with this at all?

Results?

Thanks for looking!

Yah that makes more sense... Veg they adapt flower react. Two BK's in flower I just found out hermied from it. Damn delicate genetics. I won't bash them too bad. I did defol heavy and stuff so who knows. I pulled them both so flower now looks empty ;/ A little frustrated but recent harvests I wont be without or anything but I need to get veg popping for more to go perpetual

again thanks for responding

Don't let em dry to much either tho coco gets funky when it's dry plus u get best growth when you treat it like hydro

Hey FE. Your garden looks great every time I visit. I have a few questions/thoughts if that's ok. Have you thought about getting some drip rings for your plants? I'm sure you have addressed that in the past but I missed it. The rings would water your plants in a more uniform manner. My other question is in regards to the coco. You could switch to rockwool croutons and run a system close to what The Capn does. He feeds drain to waste in veg and then he recirculates in flower I believe. Just some thoughts. I am curious to know what you think.

Cheers Far East

Not only is it ok it is encouraged.. Now we are talking!
So i started with emitters.. didnt like those then made my own halo rings but they where a fail. So I was talking with a hydro buddy and he said run them just wide open hoses and use a ball valve off the pump to regulate it. And I can't complain as it has worked. But now I want to keep fine tuning. Do better and better each run. Good call I do think halo rings are the answer.

Ahh yes the rockwool croutons. This was a serious consideration when I went from Hydroton to Coco. I just felt like the Coco was less money and seemed so similar to soil that it would be easier. Maybe I should try some plants with them to see if it does improve the roots...

As for going back to recirculating in flower etc.. I use to do that and just found that there where too many draw backs. I had a bad res bacteria and it circulated through all. This would happen either way but if one plant cause it then DTW would keep it at the one.

I feel DTW actually uses less nutes. So in DTW it is a full complement in each feeding so you can run much lower PPM. In recirc, you need to run higher ppm as later in the res time it will be low on some stuff and full on others. atleast this was how it was all taught to me. I am far from experienced. Just slightly.

DTW is just nice to flip a valve turn a switch and the left over in the res gets pumped out... close it all back up and just fill it with fresh (I do flush some with tap) And I am on to other things. If I am in a hurry I can just make a batch and chuck it in with no emptying... Truly simple...

So thank you again Noob. Very happy you asked the stuff you did. Please respond and throw a wrench in it if you think I have wrong idea's.. ;)

Here is the BK i cut at week 7.5 all hermied to shit... The same plant at week 2 was hermied. (clone). I am sure I caused it but I am feeling like it is pretty delicate to grow as none of my other plants in the same exact environment are doing poor.

:Namaste:

I actually for res treatment run Hygrozyme,Great White (I should use orca in hydro not GW I was told) and SOS. All for live beneficial bacteria growth. The more and more I look at the roots I think my hermie issue was not related to the roots. So that would narrow it down to a nute def somehow like some type of lockout (looked like n overload) or just plain poor seed...I ran all 4 BK's from the same seed as far as I recall. None have been clean.

Anyway thanks for the kindness. I guess I will just keep as is on the root side. But I will stick with over watering as to underwatering for flower. Veg I will let dry and water every other day for a bit. I need to be more delicate in flower again and leave my bad stress idea's for Veg..

I run ironhead method for coco and they use sm90 that keeps them roots white and is great as a pest repellent and roots excellurator which is expensive but never had big fat roots before when I was using it but once again very expensive

Good stuff Bro!

I will look into it... I am not sure if it is live or not wether it would work in or what but anywho... The cost isnt always the issue for me. SOS isnt bad but hygrozyme and orca are Kaching. But hey it last me several grows and it shocks me how infrequent i end up needing to get more. I don't add live each res top off. I give its feed top off weekly and then add the live in every second or third. I kind of think of it as res maintenance.

Welcome aboard!

Things look great! That splitting you see means roots anytime. Usually I see them in 7-10 days depending on the strain. Ph i try to keep at 5.8-6.0. May have been coincidence but above that didnt work as well for me. Maybe over kill on the light but should be ok. I run a t5 in the room but I keep my cloner off to the side. It gets no direct t5 light. Roots grow in the dark and foliage in the light is how it was explained to me. But obviously it needs light...

Keep it up looking good!
