OTM's DIY Bubble Cloning & Sprouting 40 Year Old Seeds & Current RDWC Harvest

Hey otm. I recently tried germing heaps of old seeds that were probably 30+ yr old and I had a hell of a time. Tried so many different methods. I think sandpapering them like imtoasted did definitely helps. I didn't end up getting a single one to do any more then crack open though. The best I got was sandpapering and into glass of water. Paper towel wasn't working at all for my old seeds and after waiting a couple days, the towel gets a bit gross and probs not a good environment for any seed.

Good luck mate, hope yours do better. Hopefully yours were stored a bit better then the ones I had.

I suspect that more important than germination technique is storage technique--32,000 years in permafrost or just cooling it in refrigerated storage...

I'm in too and hope for the best :thumb:

Have you thought about mechanical scarification of the seed coat? Like using a file or sandpaper?
I was going to suggest this as well. I use an emery nail file to just lightly scuff the seed before I soak it. This helped me from being a serial seed killer to about 90% success. :)

Hi Tunkers, nice of you to drop by! :welcome:

These were kept in a box in the basement inside those brown booze bottles all their life, doubt that it ever got over 75 degrees down there and were pretty much in the dark for many years.

Welcome aboard Baker, your little ones are looking good. They look healthy and the right age to start topping and training...the fun is just beginning! :welcome:

7-10-17 update Old Beans, Clones, & current grow;

The two old Maui Wowi beans found the final new home, they went into Rapid Rooters and into the germination station...they look lonely in there!:rofl:

I received a tracking number on the GA3, as of now it is only showing a label has been printed and not yet in the hands of the post office.

The clones are still holding their own, some slight yellowing of the bottom fans that I clipped, misted them with a little Vital Boost foliar spray.

The current grow is still stretching and the pretty little flowers are slowly starting to build.

Will be doing a rez change on Wednesday, have a fresh gallon of tea brewing and the week 4 schedule is showing Bloom Optimizer being added to the mix...will take some photos of the process I go through and post them!

:thankyou:

Your scrog is sure looking good OTM. I've done the White Widow but plan to do some Purple Kush next grow. I'll be watching yours with a little extra interest.

The Kush gals are wild and throwing budsites all over the place, as soon as I open a area up with a little site below the screen, a couple days later it is sticking through a couple inches.

The Widows are not as aggressive, fewer bud sites and a little slower to flower, this weekend I plan on doing a pretty major defoliation under the scrog, getting very crowded under there! :yikes:

Just an inspiring fact about seeds :)

Did you know that the oldest carbon-14-dated seed that has grown into a viable plant was Silene stenophylla (narrow-leafed campion), an Arctic flower native to Siberia. Radiocarbon dating has confirmed an age of 31,800 (±300 years) for the seeds.

So you do have a chance since they have been stored well

7-11-17 update;

I don't have much to report today other than the post office has my GA3 and it should be making its way to my mailbox by this weekend. I had to leave the house early this morning before lights on and did not get back home in time before lights off so I trust everything is good inside the grow room.

Tomorrow is reservoir change day so I started filling 5 gal buckets with RO water, takes about 1 1/2 hrs to RO 5 gallons and I need 25 gallon, should get 3 done tonight and the other 2 tomorrow AM.

:thanks:

7-12-17 update;

Progress to report on the clones! I see 2 showing roots!:yahoo: I tried to take some pictures but they didn't turn out very good so I will try again tomorrow.

It was a busy afternoon, rez change on the RDWC, fresh 5 gal batch for the coco gals, clone tank change...my RO system got a work-out yesterday & today!

room_017.JPG

The rez change process starts with (5) 5 gallon pails of RO water with mixed in nutes using the Growboss monitor to PH up or down.

7-12_update_001.JPG

Before I start mixing the batch, I attach a garden hose to my supply line and rez drains and open the valves. By the time I have everything mixed and PH'd, the system is drained and all I have to do is wipe out the rez with a clean white towel. By doing this it will show me if I have to be concerned with anything going wrong in the system, as long as it stays fairly clean with no slime or brown crud, the system is healthy.

7-12_update_005.JPG

After it is all wiped out, I pour in 10 gallons of nutes and start the pumps, as the level starts to lower I add in another 5 gallons, just before the pump starts sucking air, I will see a steady stream start to flow back in the rez from the returns, that tells me the buckets are full and there is no blockage in the return system. I add the remaining 10 gallons and let the system stabilize while wiping down the fill buckets. After about 20 minutes of circulation, the monitor will tell me if I need to adjust the PH and what my final PPM's are. The change will take about 45 minutes to complete, and 7 1/2 hours to fill the buckets from the RO system.

7-12_update_008.JPG

The old beans have not shown any signs of peeking out, the temp in the dome is 80 degrees with 75% RH. I have been misting them twice a day to keep the rooters damp. When I put them in the rooters, I covered them with small pieces of the rooter and kind of made it level without packing it down so if I see that area rising a little them there should be action going on.

The current grow still keeps stretching up, the tallest branch is 15" above the scrog with many more 10-12". I am beginning to see some differences within each strain. One of the Purple Kush gals is a much shorter/slower growing lady as is the same with the Widows, one was showing flowers sooner and is a little shorter than her sisters.

As far as the RDWC system verses the Coco Coir, the jury is still out on which is better, the RDWC is much less work, the Coco Coir showed faster growth in the beginning, that decision will probably made once harvest is done!:smokin2:

:thanks::420:

I love hydro medium growing. I am doing coco but love how versatile it is :passitleft: subbed up brother. Your girls are looking great

Welcome aboard Pat, I would rather grow outdoors in soil but my current circumstances will not allow it...I like tall trees!

For indoors, I think Hydro is the way to go, whether it be in coco or DWC, once you have it figured out it is easy. I would recommend Coco for first timers and then move up to DWC once coco is mastered...they are basically the same. :welcome:
