OTM's DIY Bubble Cloning & Sprouting 40 Year Old Seeds & Current RDWC Harvest

7-16 morning update;

Been a busy AM around here, ITS SEED POPPING DAY! :goof:

Pulled the old Maui Wowie beans out of the freezer around 6 am and poured them out to warm up. I filled up a cup of RO water last night to allow it reach room temp overnight. While the beans were warming up I got everything lined up and ready.

About 7:30 I tried to sort out the 6 best looking beans in the bunch, put them in a sandpaper tube and shook them for a little bit to scuff the shells up good.

The next step was to measure out the right amount of GA3 for 1 cup of RO water, the little spoon that was supplied according to the chart holds 110 mg which would translate to 500 PPM in 1 cup of water. I wanted to start with 200 PPM on this first try, too much GA3 can cause the seedlings to elongate during germination.

GA3 needs to be turned to a solvent to mix with water and mixing it with a few drops of 70% rubbing alcohol will do the job so it can be added to the water. I takes a few minutes to dissolve it but I managed to get it done.

Once it was added to the RO water, a quick check with the TDS meter and my measuring guess was very close!

The old beans are now soaking in the Gibberellic acid mixture in dark space that is about 75 degrees, they all floated when I put them in the cup and 4 hours later are still floating. I will be checking them through out the day and let you all know how they are doing this evening.

Thats a pretty slick but simple looking auto water system OTM. Doing a little browsing sure can pay off.

I sure worked well over the long 4th weekend, I bought it on a eBay auction for $26.00, only one other bidder to worry about. Why this seller was selling it so cheap I don't know, it was brand new...others selling them want $50.00 or more.

7-16 evening update;

The old beans have been soaking for about 12 hours, I was away for most of the afternoon/early evening and didn't make it home before lights out in the grow room so nothing to report on that operation.

I checked the old beans and found 4 had sunken, I tapped on the other 2 and the 5th one went down, the sixth slowly floated back up. The interesting thing about the 4 that had sunk by themselves is all are laying on the bottom with the pointy end sticking up and all have a small air bubble attached to the pointy end...looks weird as hell!

I tried to get a picture, if you look close you can see a light or white spot on the tips...that is the bubble.

I am really hoping to see some cracking in the morning!:wood:

Great read with my coffee! So much good info in here, OTM.

It's possible your seeds are still absorbing watering to rehydrate. At least in my mind, I usually consider it a good thing when the seeds take on enough water to sink. But feel free to take my comments with a grain of salt; I'm still learning so much from this great place.

Come on little seeds! Show us those taproots! :cheertwo:

With those little bubbles still clinging to them that might be true, they must be coming from inside the shell.

7-17-17 update;

:circle-of-love::cheertwo::tommy::yahoo::party::passitleft::goof::woohoo:

Ladies & Gentlemen, I was gone most of the day and when I got home and looked at the old beans, 4...FOUR! had popped open!!!!

I had to throw down a nice cold beverage and ponder the next move...into the paper towel they went...no tap root sticking out like I had witnessed with the seeds I popped on my current grow, but they definitely opened the shell!

I didn't want to drown them so I figured get them in a more oxygenated environment, so a used a 1/8 teaspoon measuring spoon and fished them out, put them in a dish on paper towels, added about 1/4 cup of the GA3 solution and took their birth photo! :laughtwo:

They are now in a nice dark place with a heating pad under the plate.

The other two are still in the cup, one has a bubble at its tip standing up straight like yesterday and the other is laying on its side...maybe tomorrow AM they can join the others which I am hoping will have small tap roots peaking out!

I had planned on a clone picture update as well as the current grow, but by the time I had a refreshment and put the old beans in their new home, it was lights out in the grow room.

A big THANK YOU! to everyone following along and keeping their fingers and toes crossed...I hope to have even better news tomorrow!

:thankyou:
