Nutty & His Antics

@Pat Puffer the plan is to reduce the " perched water table " people add stones to their grow bags but they still get the perched water table only they make it higher ,adding stones this does not do anything to help with drainage

the first pic is a diagram i wanted to see the root structure and the time i have

back to perched water table
i call it soggy bum lol ,
if you get a sponge and soak it , now hold the sponge upright , when the water runs out there will still be a heavy layer at the bottom , this is like your pots , its the perched water table , turn the sponge to the side the water will run down again still leaving a heavy part of water at the bottom , you only move the perched water table to another location :nerd-with-glasses:

so in theory if i water half up half down i get less of the soggy bum

Each one has a section that says too wet. Which one are you doing.

mate that is the example of the perched water table and how it sits and how it moves ,

if you water a pot with 3 gallon of water , at the bottom it will stay wet until all the water comes down through the medium , but if i water from the bottom and have the medium draw the water up a third this will keep it nicely moist not soaked , when i water the top ill water with maybe 1 and half gallon so the pot dries equal and it does not leech out the nutrients in my soil, all this along with not having a perched water table for more than a day the soil at the bottom stays moist not soaked same as the top , an even moist container no soggy bum , ( i would think ) :ganjamon: , i would also think water more often

Yea makes sense.

People learn more by trying new things mate , if it does not work who cares just do what you did before , if it is better with better yields and less nutes used then give your self a pat on the back for trying new methods :thumb: there is a bigger world thinking outside the box :)

I agree my friend. I just have to follow you to see that there are many ways to do the same thing. And many we haven't tried yet. Lots of really great stuff you do. And explained perfectly.

Trying to grow catnip in a glass jar ( inspired by @Dabeast09 's Bibi plant). I figured the rotting wet zone might be removed by a base of hydroton rather than gravel. The roots seem really happy.

is there a drain ? pretty cool :)

even potted soil with the same balls at the bottom will only move up the perch water table , as explained even with the sponge and nothing but air holding it up there is the water perch, lol it took a while for me to get it but its simple to see now once i clicked ,

i have three wheely bins broke down of crab shell mate , some dusty fine some i just crush

No drain and I forgot to mention I have a sheet of that squishy loose-mesh drawer lining rubber mat shit in there 1.) to keep as much soil out of my balls as possible AND 2.) I was thinking I might break the surface tension at the bottom of the soil 'sponge', releasing the perched water table. In my head so long as there is a moist 'route' between the soil and the hydroton, water will still migrate downward. Maybe?

Like reverse wick watering
