My First Time Growing

photoperiod is any normal strain plant that you must use 12/12 light to induce flowering. the opposite of an autoflower..

O.K., now I'm confused, I just put my normal plants into flower by switching them to 12/12 from 18/6 lighting and was told autoflowers were started and flowered in 12/12 from the start. So if it's the opposite that would mean autoflowers would be on something other than 12/12 at some point. Sorry to sound so stupid, but I just don't know this stuff yet. This is my first grow and just started on 1/1/16.

Smokey autoflower a can be kept 18/6 or even 20/4 and they will still flower.

Photo plants build up flowering hormone at night. (Florigen) It is destroyed by light. So we need 12/12 to flower. (12 hours or more darkness)

Autos are triggered by age. They flower at a certain age no matter the light schedule.

You were part right though. You can plant a photo seed at 12/12 and keep it there. It will behave like an auto. It will grow to a certain maturity and then start flowering. Pretty neat. Dr. Ziggy grows his plants that way. It saves time for sativas.

I understand now, Thanks for the explanation, I was totally lost when she said autoflowers were the opposite. I get it now, Thank You!

Thanks for the pic's & videos, I see what trichomes are now. I have quite a ways to go before I see that I think. But tomorrow I start trimming some leaves to get light down low. Mine are so bushy, no light is making it down to the lower buds. Fan leaves only (I assume they are the big ones)

You won't go far wrong by defoliating or not defoliating. Defoliating might slow down your growth, but reward with higher yield.

You won't go far wrong by tucking or not tucking fan leaves.

Buds can get plenty large and sticky growing up in the shade of fan leaves all their life. As supporting evidence, I offer Hawaiian Skunk 'Hani' photos from last July.

Hani was never defoliated or tucked. There was a lot more bud under those leaves than I expected.

I'm going to post that Trichomes video here, I've always thought that was so cute! Thanks for the reminder Brother dear. :)

Smokey,
we discussed this a few pages back on differences between Auto's and Photo's. Auto's are on their own time schedule, set internally. They don't require the same light schedules as Photo period plants that depend on a light schedule similar to what would be found in nature.

There is no veg and flower light schedule for Auto Flowering plants (Autos), they are on one set time. Mine are on 20/4 schedule.

Smokey, do you understand what "tucking" is? Instead of snipping off the leaves you can just tuck some of them under a branch or other leaf to get them out of the way. They will pop back into place, so sometimes you have to keep tucking.

Some people actually use their thumb and forefinger to squeeze the leaf stem until it bends for them. This makes is droop a little and can open up areas without actually removing the leaf.

I try to tuck every day, but since they are so bushy, they seem to "pop back up" right away. I have been tucking for a long time now (as long as possible with my babies! but just haven't had a of of luck so far. you've seen the pics and that's with tucking. I have even been trying to think of a way to tie them down but haven't figured out a way yet with my supplies. These seem to be super strains or something, even LST2 doesn't have a big affect unless I intentionally bend it far it enough to change the stalk.

I am a fan of defol. I take the big fans and anything that is blocking light from getting down deeper. With 6 plants flowering in 10sqft I have to keep them trimmed to get light to the bud sights. I would probably have to have no more then 4 in that space if I didn't defol. :peace:

I'm in a 2' x 4' floor space tent and have very little room for flowering. I think that defol is the way I'm going to have to go to have any space too. I want as much product as possible so I can quit my narcotics (3 schedule 2's a day) from a work injury. I Veg in a bookcase that has 2 levels with lights to grow also on a 18/6 light schedule. They grow so big, I'm not sure that other that defol how to make space enough to get good results. But thanks for the input, It makes it easier to make the decision to defol since so many people come out on different ends of the spectrum.

I split the difference there Smoke. I don't radically strip them nor do I leave leafs on the plant like untouchable sacred cows. If it blocks light, it goes, if it won't ever grow up big (branch) I clip it, if an area is getting too tall, wack the whole section down. But, I don't sit down thinking "now I am going to strip this girl bare".

Think of it more of a spectrum rather than an on/off switch. You can strip what you feel comfortable with stripping.

EDIT: We are both in 2x4 spaces and you would be amazed at what you can cram into that small a space.
Bob ;)

I pretty much follow what Dr. Bob does.

:thumb:

(And don't let him fool ya....he likes to keep foliage so when he spends time in the tub with them no one can see him)

Shhhhhh! Don't tell anyone. I like me a fan leaf to hide behind for sure.

also in a 2x4 ft space(5ft high) and yea half my flower cycle they are touching all four walls feels cramped for sure.

It sounds like the tent I'm using, fortunately, I will be running mine in more of assembly line, As 1 growpot is done, I'll put in another to replace to flower. But am crowded with just the 2 & have and a box (to lift the fan). I have been doing LST to make more room but they seem to pop back into the same place. Just have to keep working on them. If you want to see what I mean go to PG 100 message #1489 (that's just 2 plants)
