My First Time Growing

I wish I could send you the heat!
When I open the tent I can smell a plant like odor but nothing like I expected (yet), I'm looking forward to them moving forward far enough to smell like weed!

I think you will be surprised at the smells from here on out. They are very different from what you probably associate with weed. The smell compounds are called terpenes and they can change the high you experience. The most common terpene is Beta-myrcene. Beta myrcene has a clove like smell and is commonly what we associate with the smell of cannabis. For some strains it makes up half of the terpenes. It is also found in mangoes and hops. Really hoppy beers have that characteristic myrcene smell. Beta myrcene is an analgesic (pain med) and an anti inflammatory. It also helps even out blood sugar (anti-diabetic). It has effects that inhibit DNA mutations so is good for preventing cancer. Beta-myrcene also changes the permeability of membranes in the body and allows more cannabinoids to get into the brain. If you eat a mango 45 minutes before using cannabis the effects will be greater! So more of us should keep mangoes or mango juice around when running low on Meds!

Another common terpene is alpha-pinene. It is what gives pine needles their smell. It's main effect is being a bronchodilator. This makes sense when you think about pine trees. The first thing we do when in a pine forest is to breathe deeply and smell the pine trees. This opens our lungs and helps us breathe easier. Pinene is also anti inflammatory and analgesic. It also has the ability to boost memory.

Next on our list is limonene. Limonene is found in high concentrations in citrus fruits, especially in their skin. Limonene has anti depressive activity. Who can be sad in a house that smells like lemons? It is also an anti inflammatory. It helps prevent the growth of tumors. It also helps with anxiety. It has antibacterial functions and also is used as an antifungal.

Next on the list is linalool. It is the main component in the lavender plant. It is also anxiolytic (reduces anxiety). It is an anti depressant. It has sedative qualities and can help with sleep. It is an analgesic as well.

The last one I will discuss today is Beta-caryophellene. This is a terpene found in high qualities in black pepper. It has anxiolytic properties so I keep black pepper on hand when I am smoking. It prevents me from getting too anxious and I have not had cannabis induced anxiety since I started smelling it at the onset of anxious symptoms. Beta caryophellene is also an anti inflammatory, antioxidant, anti depressive, analgesic, and helps prevent the growth of tumors. It is a very powerful terpene and its presence in black pepper makes it easily available even without cannabis.

There are many more but this is a good introduction!

It's OK Smoke... It overwwhelmed me too...:yikes: As long as it is organic and gets me stoned... I'm good... I will admit certain strains work better for the MS than others and some work better for pain and sleep but I am clueless about all the science of it... Put the seed to soil... add water... grow weed... chop weed... smoke weed.... It works...:yahoo:....:circle-of-love:

You forgot something.....make the healing Oil. :) :cco:

I'm going to blog shiggity's post. Hope he doesn't mind. ;-)

Good morning Smokeaters! How are things in the bookcase? I see the gang is all here!

Happy Sunday everyone.
Bob ;)

The plants in the bookcase are looking good, The only thing in the bookcase that might be wrong is the latest seedling (feminized Amnesia) is growing, but hasn't really opened up the initial leaves yet after about three days, My other seedlings started opening right after sprouting out of the soil, I have moved it closer to the lights to help it open up ( I moved it this morning a little after 5:00 AM and went back to sleep until a little while ago). The shell has dropped off but it's just not opening up like the others yet. I'll post more after I wake up a little more.

3 days? How long ago did you notice the shell had dropped off? You wouldn't have a pic would you? Usually they start to open right away.

:circle-of-love:

Haven't taken a pic yet, but will in a little while. But I'll do that as soon as I can. Cancel that, I just went to take a pic and found them opening up. They must have just needed more light. Here is the pic I just took. It somehow posted the pic in a separate post. It's the pic that just posted. I'm trying it again.

Does it look like a membrane is holding the two leaves together? It may make sense to drip some water, like a droplet on the tip of your finger is all it takes, to wet that. A picture would assist for sure but I bet that is what is happening. If you do it, and it is under LED move it a bit from the light while you let that soak in and do it's thing.

Bob ;)

Tough to see in the pic but I think I am seeing one first leaf or cotyledon and the other seems to be covered by a bit of the shell or membrane? Am I seeing that correctly? If so, then the water trick is how I do it and I think Cannafan as well. Put your finger in water so a droplet gets stuck to your it then gently touch the cotyledon that has the membrane on it to the droplet. When wet it is shed easier.

Others may have suggestions too that are better than mine. No panic again though of course.

The shell had fallen off, But they are opening now since I put it closer to the light, See it in the post I just put up.

Yep, they are opening. It looks green to you right? I see some green and the first true leaves, but you know better by looking at her. Sounds like it was a good decision to move her to the light a bit more. The first leaves are the two itty bitty ones in the middle when she first opens her "mouth". ;-) That is what I think I see there.

:thumb:

If there is a bit of membrane left on it, as Bob said...just a small drop of water on there and it will soften it up. It usually will shrink back up and drop off after that or just slide off from the wetness.

YEY! Another baby in the household! :happybday: Amnesia

You are seeing it bad because I couldn't get a good pic after a few tries. The first two leaves are opening now normally. Sorry about the pic, Just having a hard time taking it better. I have tried different distances, different places and different lighting.

No membrane, the shell had already fallen off.

Yes ,It's green and spreading the "mouth" now.:allgood:

Just for future reference, the "mouth" is the Cotyledons. I know you tried that word earlier, it took me a long time to get that spelled right when I tried to type it in the past. LOL

I like to add a little visual, it always looks like a mouth smiling to me before it opens up.
