Thanks Arteekay, I have always been a quick learner but didn't expect it with this! I guess I am proud of all I've learned which is only because I've had such good instructors. You guys should be taking a bow, I just followed all your leads! But I am looking forward to getting my weed ingested regularly enough to quit my narcotics (which has been my goal the whole time) and use only Marijuana to treat my pain and other problems. It is so tempting to pluck a flower and cure it to try but I'll wait, I want the most buds I can get. Just out of curiosity, How long does the flowering take? I know I have to cure it afterwards, but thought I'd heard it was 65 days of flowering before I see any product that I can then cure. I'm just wondering about it and any help would be great. Thanks again!

:welcome: to my journal, It has lots of info from experienced growers. That is the only reason why it all is doing so well! But happy to have you on board. hopefully there will be stuff to help you with any questions you might have if your new to this, They have ALL done right by me!

Smokey most strains of indica based plants like you have will take 55-65 days to finish. To decide how long we will usually look at a few things.

1. Are most of the pistils brown or are there still many new pistils coming.
2. How are all the leaves doing. If the plant is suffering that can affect the timing. (This won't apply to yours they look great)
3. (This ones most important) Under a magnifying glass what color are the trichomes on the buds? How many are clear/cloudy/amber colored. As they mature the little round gland heads will start maturing. They start clear then turn cloudy. After that they turn yellow and red. For an indica plant you usually want to wait for a bit of amber. 10% or so. Some like more. The more Amber the more of a body sedative effect. The more clear the more heady effect. 10% will give a nice mix of head and body effect. It is one of the personal decisions we all make.

Cloning Experiment

Hiya smokeater.

Here is my little cloning experiment based upon Lembatoast's tried and true technique and the supplies I had on hand


1. Rockwool cubes were soaked overnight in a mixture of 12oz water, 1/4 tsp cloning liquid.

Usually I soak for 15 minutes. The cloning liquid label recommended 2-4 hours.


2. Cuttings were taken from apical meristems (on the diagonal). I this case, a Girl Scout Cookies in pre-flower.

Yes. My scissors are all sticky. I was trimming this morning. :)


3. Cuttings went immediately into the rockwool cubes. I don't use pre-existing holes. I went for a tight fit by pressing the stem into the rockwool.

4. Cubes and cuttings were placed in a plastic back, bag was inflated with my breath, then sealed.

5. I plan to open them up and breathe in new air every 2 days or so.

That would be fun for him to try Radogast! I look forward to your results. I have very good luck with rock wool cubes. And they are so cheap for how many you get, and can be reused if needed.

1. The pistils seem to be changing color to something different, I can't tell what color they are going to be, maybe a cloudy color with some brown at the very end (even under the magnifying glass), but they are changing color. They are not completely white anymore. As far as to the amount of pistils, I hadn't noticed it until you asked, There are more pistils now than before but I don't know when that happened. I was initially just looking at the pistils to sex them and then stopped looking for them.

2. The leaves look great, except at the very bottom where some appear to be dying out (just at the very bottom node), I had assumed that was from not watering enough even though I water them every 2 to 3 days now on the big girls, Is that normal in flowering mode? I was watering them every 3 to 6 days before flowering, But now they seem to be "drinking" so much that it takes a gallon or more every two days (for each of the big plants). I even waited and let them go longer without water until they started really drooping a lot. After I saw that one afternoon after waiting the extra few days, I slowly increased my watering routine and kept finding them completely dry until I started to water them every 2 to 3 days. Mostly 2 days.

3. As far as the trichomes go, I don't know what they are to check them. If it's the flowers themselves, then they are a cloudy color. When I get a chance (we have to run to the store in a little bit) I will have my son move one out of the tent and take a picture so you can see the colors they are now without the grow light changing the color, If it's the flowers themselves. Like I said, I don't know what a trichome is, I know someone talked about trichomes in a previous post, but never understood what that meant and hated bugging you guys with dumb questions all the time (you have no idea how curious I can get, believe me, I can be a pain is the ass with questions) especially about small things that I know won't change anything. (for instance, since the bottom leaves have fallen off just the one node, can I add soil?), PJ explained to me that previously I always left a part of the bucket short of soil and that I should fill them to the top which is what I have been doing for transplants and initial germination ever since.
 
If it's just the very bottom small leaves, that's pretty normal Smokey. If it continues, then we can take a look.

The trichomes will not be something to look at until they start building buds, You've got a while for that yet.

I'll turn the rest of the stuff over to Shiggity and any further comments he wants to make.

Thanks Canna, It is only the bottom leaves and I've been watching them closely now since I saw them during a watering.

On the pistils, they shoot out a brilliant white and then as they do not get any contact with pollen, they yellow and then turn to any number of colors depending on breed/conditions. Kinda like Hydra, as one head dies, two replace it. So the girl will keep putting out new pistils to hopefully make seeds. This is what makes sensemilla, or seedless cannabis. You hold away the pollen forcing the girl to keep putting out more and more pistil/calyxes in hopes of reproducing. This, as I understand it is what causes our buds to swell so much late in flower.

So, you will see the early pistils yellow, then turn to red orange while the flower puts out more and more. When you stop seeing new ones, harvest is very close and it will be time to look closely at trics.

I found a few quickly that can give you an idea of trichome colors during the flowering. They start out clear, then they will turn milky or cloudy, and finally will start to turn amber:

Mostly clear with some cloudy:

Oh, when we start saying they are looking "Frosty", or "sticky"...that's referring to the trichomes building up on the buds and leaves.
