My First Plant - Cookie Killer (Auto)

We talked about MG staying wet too long. But it just occurred to me I'm not home every day or weekend. If I'm understanding things correctly, I don't have the option to use a method that requires daily watering and feeding?

If I'm understanding this correctly, I'm limited to a media that can not need watered for up to 2 days minimum. Am I understanding this correctly please?
If you can't tend your garden daily coco is not a good fit. :Namaste:
Soil will be your best option. Imo.

Wow that's so wild about how this changes everything. Thanks for the clear answer, appreciate it! 🙏

Okay, . . . soil it is!

Does anyone know if Roots Organic Original would need watered everyday for inside growing?

I'm interested in this for outdoor containers as well.

I just noticed her buds are starting to look noticeably more mature with bracts showing. This part is as exciting as when the seed first sprouted! 👍🙂

I use it. Watering frequency depends on plant size and water needs. It also depends on the size pot you have.

In a typical 5 gallon pot in early veg it can be 5 days due to the water holding capacity of the soil and the uptake of the plant due to its size. Right now, with fully flowering plants, I water every other day in 7 gallon pots.

This sounds perfect. Actually very similar to what I have experienced with this plant. Hmmm . . .

Also, just for the record I ordered Roots Lush soil and Mykos. I have a seed in water now going into paper towel later.

It's the same variety. I thought this would be a great comparison. I'm using a 3 gal grow bag (instead of plastic). It will be a fair comparison up until the 7th week when the current plant went deficient anyway.

I'm thinking about planting the seed straight into the grow bag (once germinated) to avoid transplanting this time. This makes sense to me. Online it's like a 50/50 split of auto growers about doing this.

I learned about PPFD when I got the SF light, today I learned about DLI. It occurs to me these are great tools to set up a new room, or make room for a second plant. Lol

Is there a certain order to read Lowenfels 4 "Teeming" books?

Yes and no, according to the author the best way to read them is to go with:

Microbes, Bacteria, Fungi, Nutrients in that order. I also recommend that order because Nutrients gets really dense and it’s very useful to understand how everything works first. I originally started with nutrients and had to read it twice then go back and read it again after the other three

Here’s a video you really need to check out if you’re interested in organic growing (shoutout to @seaofgreen18 for the updated video):

That's good because Microbes will be here tomorrow. I just sampled the video, it looks great. Too tired to watch it now, but looking forward to this tomorrow.

Very cool! Thanks!! 👍👍

Didn't think about the books having an order to them but makes sense. What @Keffka said.

Coco perlite and just feed nutrients daily.
No need to guess if your soil is working :Namaste:
Makes it easier to concentrate on growing roots and learning about the plant.
Soil is slow and can be unreliable when it comes to giving correct nutrients at the correct time.
Bless those that have perfected it, magicians. :adore:
I find it a good way to learn What she needs and when. @Bill284 Method

This is something I will remember. Your posts are always very well received. 👍🙏
Yes. Coco is an inert medium meaning it holds no nutrient value on its own. If you have the time and can keep a daily schedule reliably then coco is certainly a medium I would consider. It'll definitely beat out soil in terms of performance due to its higher O² exchange so you'll definitely be able to grow larger plants in the same time frame but, the downside is if you miss a day or two your root zone will be bone dry. Because of the lower saturation zone the plant doesn't have a reservoir to really pull from but, again, if you can maintain a daily schedule look to coco as a medium. Coco is also a good way for you to transition into aquaponics like hydroponics and aeroponics. Coco will take full strength Cal/Mag from the beginning.

A method I really want to try is Fertigation. Another site I frequent has one of the best ferti growers I've ever seen.

Didn't think about the books having an order to them but makes sense. What @Keffka said.

Originally they didn’t have an order. Basically, he wrote microbes after having questions about synthetic gardening and talking with leaders in the soil biology field like Dr Elaine Ingham. There were hints of fungi and bacteria in the microbe book. That book lead him to questions about nutrients and how plants actually use them, which lead to the nutrient book and even more about fungi and bacteria. That then lead to a full blown book about fungi with talk of bacteria, which then lead to a full book on bacteria. Once he finished bacteria he revised his recommended order to make it more approachable.

At first I wasn’t sure how useful the fungi and bacteria books would be. I was wrong. Each one of those books dropped information in them I had never heard anywhere else but wound up being completely true.

When I joined this group recently I was trying to figure out what the "best" grow media is so I could have it.

I realize now that what is the best for one grower is not the best for another. Like there can be general principles in theory about grow media that all agree on, but the question really is what's "best" for the individual in practice.

Even within specific media there are varying principles. For example, soil can be utilized with synthetics/chemicals or organics/amendments. Going even deeper, there are varying levels to organic and synthetic. One organic grower doesn’t follow the same rules, recipes, and methods as the next. Some prefer a bag like @GeoFlora Nutrients and some prefer to amend the soil themselves.

I could keep going deeper and deeper but I’ve made my point. It’s all about what works best for you in your specific situation. It’s why you’ll have a hard time finding hard specifics like “how much water should I use?” Or “how long will my soil last”. Those are things no one but you can determine. We can give a general format like “until you see a slight bit of runoff” or “never let it runoff” but as you can see, even there it switches up.

I'm planting the second seed now (same variety). It's cool to see cal and mag listed along with the NPK. 😎

I was just admiring the upgrades to my grow closet and it occurred to me that while I can give them each their own appropriate light zones I will have to try to find a happy medium for humidity.

@Ramblinrose1965 While I was putting the seed in the soil, Sirius started playing Bertha. Looks like I have a lady named Bertha too now. You should have warned me how addictive this is. Lol 🙂☮️

I tried to warn you in an earlier post

Its a fun and rewarding hobby.

Good luck with Bertha and The other one
