Mono Grows a Pound

Mono, the way you took the pic in the first photo and the way you have everything positioned, it looks like a garden, the kind to sit back and enjoy the serenity. The only thing missing is a waterfall. lol

Well, well, well.

Night time grow temps are dropping as low as 12C at the moment, with it potentially going to get colder.

Really don't want to have to heat it, May consider switching to lights on at night time but not sure how much it would help really. Other option is buying a heater to keep the chill off.

Is it worth buying a heater?

It was just a small space heater for 30 bucks. Set it to 1000 watts and half way up. It will make your power bill jump, especially if you have to use 1500 watt setting. That's why I'll be taking a break when this grow ends, just till March

I have bought a heater. 2.4 's (2400watts) although not sure I want to use it for the grow. Electric bill the main thing lol.

Do cold temps at lights off affect yield?

I believe i have read that if it gets cold enough then yes it can effect your harvest.......i think it would kind of stunt and slow down the process.....now i may be wrong but i am pretty sure that i also read not to let temps get below 60 or 15.6c for you.....me personally i would definately add heat to keep above 15celcius:).....hope this helps and maybe some others can verify what i am saying:)

photosynthesis shuts downs at around 55-60F or 13C-ish.
Any colder than that, your plants will not only cease photosynthesis, but they will also suffer from stunted growth, or die.
As for temp affecting yield, colder air slows down the gas exchanging process so harvests will take longer in cooler temps.
Another fun fact, the temperature differences between night and day also have a profound effect on node spacing!

What he said:)lol

I've read and seen people letting it get cold in the room or tent for the last couple of weeks to let the buds harden. They were talking about temps as low as 60 degrees during the night cycle. I haven't tried it but I will be.

Maybe the winter crops could be selected on ability to endure cold temps... Summin that was once growing wild, at Altitude.. Where the thin air holds less heat...

I would lights on at night, heat for girls and hens.. Then have a thermostatic controlled greenhouse heater... Set to kick in if temps drop...

Hope weather being kind at the mo mate, batten down the hatches !!!!

:Namaste:

the only reason there could be for buds "hardening" due to cold weather, would be the plants natural instinct to trap as much warm air/heat as possible to allow it to survive the night. During the day however, they would just fluff back out to normal when the heat returned.
Would be an interesting science experiment for sure.

I was also under that impression. Over my last 5 years of growing I have had cooler than perfect night time temps but never anything below 18C. Last grow which was a monster harvest had a constant temperature of 25C day and night.

I have also heard / read that low temps during flowering can increase thc production (I dare say nominally) and also bring out some great colours in the buds and leaves.

I think it's looking like heater on lol

You really are a wealth of knowledge Jinn. I never knew photosynthesis happened during the dark period. I was always under the impression that plants required light for the process...

I wasn't sure info could get away with letting the temperature drop that lol. But really the grow room is down that low and we have only had -3C outside. Last year we had lows of -22C so don't want the grow room hitting below freezing temps.

So, since it's unanimously decided that mono needs some heating in the room, would I be better to 'keep the chill out of the air' (around 18C) or just give them a really comfortable environment and push for around 22-24C at lights off?

Of which there are many cold resistant strains :). Weather is good here at the moment, around freezing and some snow lol. Unfortunately the tent is in a unheated, uninsulated room of the house.

Temps drop super fast.

Hope all is well with you matey.

Photosynthesis is only done with lights on, but the cold temps(13C or less) at night will shut down all of the plants growth, and cause them to either A)have stunted growth (to include foliage and root systems), or B) kill the plant.

So while yes photo is only during the day, you do get growth at night in the form of roots, which will halt with the decrease in temps.
