Max's First Grow - Soil - LED - Painkiller XL

dont worry about takinh bits off. you could snap it in half and nuke it and it probs grow back. they are weeds after all and extremely resilient.

It just felt right - those top fan leaves were blocking new growth/potential bud sites. Thanks for the reassurance though, much appreciated to hear I've done the right thing.

I have a quick question about the Bud Ignitor - do I wait until I have it to flip the girls or can I flip now and add the Ignitor when it arrives next week? Reason I ask is because they are already 3/4 filling the frame (they've had 6 weeks in veg). If I let them grow much bigger I'm going to be in trouble. They are going through a growth spurt at the moment and have put on at least 4" of height since going under the frame 3 days ago.

Just keep tucking and LST. Pull them down

Thanks Krypt, I'll keep on tuckin' ;-)

My only concern is running out of space in the net. The girls are already pretty big - having the net in lets me easily see they've grown upwards by 4" in 3 days. They are also growing outwards too. Things will get pretty crowded pretty quick. I've got a 600w HPS light arriving next week too, but I'll be running it at 400w. I think it'll get crazy in the tent over the next 10 weeks

What a difference three days makes...

This is the frame on Wednesday

Growth is exploding. Plant will be at 6 weeks veg tomorrow; just waiting for the Bug Ignitor and HPS light to arrive before flipping. Hopefully they will turn up Monday.

I went HPS on the second light because it was less than half the price of a second LED, plus I've seen some amazing grows with mixed LED and HPS. I also think the HPS will help keep heating costs down by providing both light and heat. Time will tell if this was a good move or not. I'm hoping the stuff really does arrive Monday or I'm going to struggle for space in the SCRoG. Having the frame in has let me visualise how fast they are growing.. it's scary!

Note that some of those branches have been moved across to the next square in the frame since the first picture, so the growth is bigger than the height alone would imply.

They look fantastic! And they're in hyper growth mode too - no telling what kind of jungle you'll end up tending!

They are looking frisky aren't they? I actually put the wrong 'before' picture up - there are only 2 days between them in those pictures. I have the feeling I'm going to be in trouble with these girls. Just waiting for a response on when to use Bud Ignitor before I flip them.

you be fine mate. if it gets too big just prune it. whats your root structure like? thats what will decide if you get a good result in flower. big healthy roots = big healthy bud .

Hi Cultivator,

I've not checked the roots since potting up into fabric. Given their huge growth spurt I'd hazard a guess that the roots are good :-)

Day 1 Flower 1st February 2016

It's a big day here at Headroom Towers - the grand flip!

The Bud Ignitor and second light arrived so the girls got 2ml of Ignitor in their water, a light trim of their undercarriage and the lights set to 09:00 - 21:00 (that's 9am to 9pm for the Americans in the audience).

They also got a thorough soaking as they were incredibly dry. I've only been giving them half a gallon of water between all three of them every other day, which appears to be inadequate. Today they got just over half a gallon each - I stopped when I got run off for the first time since they went into 5 gallon pots. As I type this I realise I've been very remiss in documenting the watering schedule. I've gone from over watering in the early stages to under watering, but they have been thriving on a low water regime.

Their need for water has suddenly shot up. The next challenge is storing enough water in the tent to de-chlorinate - Tent space is at a premium.

In the spirit of disclosure I should mention there was 2 teaspoons of unsulphered blackstrap molasses in the water along with some myco. The Bud Ignitor smells like the world's most expensive molasses solution but I only got 100ml, which is plenty for this one grow.

Son & I reorganised the filter and lights, changing them around to different hangers. We put the HPS light in but it's not going to be switched on until the weekend - it'll run hot and I'm terrified of burning the house down. The ballast needs putting somewhere safe ie not on the carpet or in the tent. At the weekend I'll spend the day checking temperatures of light, ballast and tent.

Soooo, a big day, day 1 of flower. Lights out crept up on us so we couldn't take a picture of the reorganisation but I'll do some tomorrow; one to show height of plants above the frame and another of the two lights hung from the top of the tent. Comments on where and how to locate the ballast would be much appreciated.

So where are we now? It's;

Day 43 veg (6 weeks 1 day)
Day 1 flower

Exciting times :-) It's been a thrilling journey so far, something I can't adequately convey in this little journal. You all know where I'm coming from on this.

Thanks for reading and generally being there with help and advice. This grow won't be perfect but together we've been learning and the next one will be better, and the next one after that better still. I'm already planning a cabinet build to get the grow room in my home office, which locks.

For the second grow I won't veg as long and I'm seriously considering using SWICK to water nicely. I'd also love to try LOS. So many plans...

Flower power! Right on, Max! Very exciting stuff.

Even though I'd read somewhere that flowering plants drink less than vegging plants I found the exact opposite to be true for my plants. Within a week of switch they were guzzling like sailors on a weekend pass and they kept it up up until the very end. Of course, the RH in my grow room is on the low side so that may have been a contributing factor.

I also had fears about ballast heat. Have a Phantom II. It emits gentle heat - not at all alarming. Hope your ballast does the same.

Thanks for all the comments. I've been busy with work and not had much chance to take pictures or do an update this week, so here are a few pictures from 4 days ago

Up skirt shot - Things are getting bushy under there

The rack - lots of tucking has occurred

Things are definitely getting crazy in the tent. The explosive growth continues and the Blueberry has shot up so fast that getting all the growth under the net is nigh on impossible. I've LST'd it over to try to train her to run along the side of the frame. I'm now starting to appreciate why it's not a great idea to mix strains.

When I get home I'll take some more up to date pictures and show how BB#1 is outgrowing the others.

This weekend I'll switch on the HID light after getting the ballast screwed to the wall.

More anon...

Thanks Cultivator. I half guessed fan leaves wouldn't work but it's good to hear one way or the other. I've ordered some Root Riot cubes. I've noticed that new clones always look a bit sorry for themselves before they take. I'm sure they will grow to be beauties though :-) If I remember correctly from one of your videos you remove a couple of nodes before sticking in the rooting plugs.

Does anyone know if 2700k CFL bulbs will do the job for clones? I can get some cheap from the local DIY store, along with some batten lamp holders.

I'm thinking 4 20w stick bulbs.

That should be just fine here is a chart it helped me a lot. I grow with T8's. I hope that this helps:)

Be careful with the molasses it can mold. I do not know if anyone else has tried it but my soil got nasty and stinky when I did a few years ago. Your grow looks really good :thumb:

If you keep them tucked you can fill up your gaps in your ScRog and get more bud tops. :goodjob:
