Masonman's - Hi-Brix - Jock Horror - 2016

its a little cool for maximum growth to occur. Lockout can occur. Some cooler growing strains might work. :circle-of-love:

I agree with ziggy. Maybe you could put a small space heater in there. Just a suggestion.

A discussion about how long vegging plants go without water has evolved at In The Lab With Doc Bud

I went into more detail there about the environment and some possible solutions since not everyone reads my journal, and I thought maybe it would help more people in a similar situation if we come up with a viable solution. I'm discovering that cabinet growing can be a pain to control the environment especially when 2 cabinets (veg and flower) share the same environmental hardware. For now I just wanted to document the date and type/quantity of the feeding here.

I'd hate for Ziggy to keep repeating himself... lol :goof:

You should stop by Canna... you're pretty slick with the green :morenutes:

Yup. Phosphorus uptake won't be good at all with those temps. Trouble ahead.

Perfect!

Yep! Small volumes of air are harder to stabilize than large ones. Cabinet growing is a reality of prohibition, not an optimal method of raising crops. We deal with it as best we can.

Your soil won't work well unless temps get into the mid '70's. Phosphorus uptake is going to be greatly reduced, which will effect sugar and terp production in a big way. How about an incandescent bulb at the base of the cabinet to warm it up a bit?

Or a small space heater! Same thing, slightly larger package.

Day 30 Flip

Super Drench!!! :morenutes:

Finally, she was ready to be watered.

4 fl oz Transplant
40 ml Tea
4 gallons water.
6 TBSP Epsom salt (container is somewhere between 15 and 20 gallons soil)

Over the course of a hour, slowly made her take it all with maybe a quart or 2 runoff into the saucer.

I had an epiphany. The light was never an issue. Since I'm running a scrog, the top of the plant (if it grew vertical) is at the outer edges of the screen. The newer growth is in the center. So, the plant was fading from the bottom up. Duh!!!!

So, I open up the cabinet this evening and there was all my bud porn just laying about. So, I took pictures.

Nice! They'll green up real nice after that super drench. DeStress would also be good. If you have the WayAhead Product, now would be a great time to use it.

Epic buds just ahead mate!

Thanks Doc....

I was late getting to her tonight so I missed the window for foliar spraying. Will do it tomorrow night when lights come on. I don't have any WayAhead... and I'm almost out of Transplant now... lol. I'll be ordering another kit soon. I'll make sure to get some WayAhead with my next order. The breeder recommended this strain to be grown out in soil. I didn't think I would have any needs like the salt lovers. Apparently she's just a hungry one.

BTW... Her smell is completely different. I've only seen her grown in hydroponics. I remember her smelling very "bright???" Like you would add fresh lemon juice to a chicken stock. Sorry, I've never been good describing taste and smell. In soil, she smells heavy, like diesel fuel was added to the mix. Honestly, I'm not much a fan of it. Smells like my outdoor grow last year. Pure diesel. After the cure though, it smelled wonderful. I'm hoping for the same with the Jock Horror.

mason, they look great!! :high-five:
your JH will be different in HB soil than other soil & especially after the cure. :)
its delicious tasting and great high too..

Masonman, you sure make this look easy. :) Nicely done :yahoo:

Thank you guys... And thank Doc for making me make it look easy. I don't have a clue what I'm doing. A real testament to the simplicity of the kit. I opened the cabinet tonight and my heart swelled. There's frost EVERYWHERE!!! Touch one fan leaf and my fingers stink.

Got a question about my clones. If the mother goes 10 weeks in flower, that leaves me 40 days I have to keep managing a clone until the flower room opens up. I need to top the bigger one, I just don't know where. I counted 5 sets of branches plus the top. This is all new growth since the transplant. I need to hobble her Cathy Bates style. Any suggestions? Imma gonna grow this sucka big this time. Mom didn't stretch much at all after the flip. I'm guessing 4-5 OZ. My goal is 10. I may even have to up can her to a 3 gallon pot while waiting for space. I'm not gonna do a true scrog next time. I will just use the screen for training and structural support. Fill the screen the best I can in veg, then let all the tops grow a couple inches past the screen, then flip.

Opinions on which node to top her at?

Here's my logic for topping:

1. Do not top or prune unless we're leaving 5-7 bladed leaves on the remaining tops. Wait until that's the case before topping.
2. Top the main stem so that 3-5 branches with 5-7 bladed leaves remain under the top.
3. clean up lower branches to achieve #2 as necessary.

If you post a few pics from the side I can help you choose a spot.

Here are the pics. I counted 5 sets of branches plus the top. Like I said earlier, I need to keep one of the clones for at least 40 days until the bigger cabinet is freed up. The other clone is half this size and she looks healthier. If/when it becomes too crowed for both in the veg cabinet, I'll cull one of them.

I know she looks sickly. I still cannot afford the temp controller. I sprayed her with destress 2 days ago. Good thing I'm trying to slow her down... lol

OK, so with that one, if you look in the second pic, right in the middle of the picture there's a spot that shows the main stem, the branch on the left is slightly higher than the branch on the right.

In this case, I'd bend (super crop) the stem right above the left branch and wait a week. Then I'd look to top it, after seeing what the response is to the lower branches.

You could top it now, but with your low temps and low metabolism I'd wait and see what the plant does first.

Day 34 Flip

It's been 4 days since I gave her the super drench. Not much new going on. Gave her some Brix at lights on.

I like the cabinets in lieu of tents, but I'm gonna have to rethink/retool my environmental controls.

I need a climate controller that will operate all my hardware and just let the exhaust fan run 24hrs/day. How I'm doing it just isn't going to work if I want to progress as a grower. Humidity in the cabinet is spiking up to 68% waiting for the exhaust to kick on from the heat. I'm still not convinced it will be a big deal. I have two 6" fans running, and the humidity doesn't stay that high. Night humidity stays constant 48%. Day time, it just rides the heat wave 48-68%. But, combined with trying to run a veg cabinet, trying to keep everything stable is becoming a thorn in my side.

I have 2 spare bedrooms that have been unused for years. I could run one for veg, and one for flower. I just don't need more than one flowering plant at a time. I do eventually want her to be the best she can be though.

I can increase the duty cycle of the exhaust in my flower cabinet by increasing the ambient temps from 67F to 72F.

How important is the 10 degree differential between lights on and off? If I switched to 5 degrees, it would help humidity spikes in flower and temps a little in the veg cabinet.

Anyway, here's the pics

Despite your environmental problems they still look pretty damn good!

Strive to get the environment dialed in. Quality depends on it.

Thank you Doc. I hope I'm not giving the impression to you or anyone else that I'm not satisfied. I'm overjoyed!!! I remember when I was a teenager. I daydreamed about growing buds like this. I would drool over the pictures in High Times magazine. Now, thanks to you and the rest of the forum members, I am fulfilling one of my dreams. And to think, this is just my first indoor grow.

Yep, and with your ability AND a great environment you'll kick some serious cannabis ass.

Day 19 Clone Veg

She started to wilt a little so time for some T/Water. I super cropped where Doc suggested (I think). Hope I did it right. I squeezed the stem between my thumb and index finger and tried to twist at the same time. The stem was as hard as a rock, so I bent her at the same time trying to break the fibers down a bit.

The first pic is before I did anything. Hoping to improve my watering technique. She looked wilted enough to me. (9 days since her last drink)

The other pics are where I super cropped her. I pruned a couple lower fan leafs that were dying also. Yesterday she got some left over Brix from the flower girl, so I will spray Destress tomorrow.

The other clone isn't ready for water yet. I'll post pics of her when she's ready.

Yep, looking good. This is the plant in the cold environment, right? But it will get to bloom in a warm climate?

If I might offer a little training advice ... :cheesygrinsmiley:

That fan that's sticking straight up for now? That can easily be bent back down horizontally and it'll take that position and do just fine and that's what I usually do, but ... in the end it's kinda in the way and it helps fuel that apical top, so you might want to just take it off. And be sure to keep that apical tip bent below the others for a few days at least. It'll return to dominant very quickly, so you have to keep at it. It's nice and pliable so all it needs is a firm downward bend whenever you see it curling back up - you don't have to supercrop it, just a good bend. You have to get the lower tops in a dominant position for a few days to set some solid growth in them.

I thought you were going to top it, but LST will work just as well on a nice compact plant like that. :thumb:
