Maine 4-Season Greenhouse Grow

It’s been great seeing your greenhouse develop BH, I’m going to try to build one this year out in my back garden.

I’ve got a pile of reclaimed timber to play with so hopefully I can pull something together ...

What are your weather conditions/challenges?

I’m in Scotland Blew so we are just coming out of a -5 Degrees’s Celsius spell for a week there.
Summers are mild with lots of rain and overcast weather.
It’s quite normal to get all seasons in 1 day lol.

...

Just looked up your approximate latitude...57N! Also looked up your daylight and it says 18 hour summer days?? Sounds like a southern facing GH would be perfect for you! I am @ 44N.

I got my greenhouse to about a steady 55F overnight (with it 30F outside) but I am still trying to get some idea of what is too cold for the plants? 60F was my target temp, but that would likely be in 2 weeks or so....

Thoughts/observations/old wives tales appreciated.
Hey blew, getting caught up on your journal. I've a ton of questions about your GH... but another time. I seen you were looking for some old wives tales, old skippers around here would only harvest stuff (veggies, cut wood/lumber) on the waxing moon instead of on a waning moon. Saying good you don't get a good harvest on a waning moon.

We get a max of 17hrs but only in June and the 1st week in July Blew.

I've got a nice south facing back garden where the greenhouse will be perfect along the fence line.

Unfortunately it'll be too risky for growing cannabis as it's still very illegal in the UK. Hopefully that will change soon.

My veggies will love it though

Risky because of the aroma or peeping neighbors? If you used polycarbonate it opaques the interior of the GH from the outside. My UPS driver always gives me a huge smile late August driving within feet of my GH since I am venting it and it is AROMATIC! Of course, I also sleep easy knowing it is 100% legal for me to grow...in fact that was the main reason I started growing cannabis! We still give 50% of our crop away to family and friends...the other 50% is curing in our root cellar..."cave cured coastal cannabis"!

Currently raining cats and dogs, 50F. Last night was 15F and 3" of snow. Wtf happened to winter? Cannabis is currently warm and illuminated up in the GH. It's a nice feeling....

Risky for both reasons Blew.

Most of my neighbours all smoke but lots of curious kids running around my garden all the time.

That's good to know that the polycarbonate works well, who knows, I may be able to sneak 1 plant in amongst some other crops.

Can't wait for the day that it's legal. I guarantee that the majority of my neighbours will have plants outside lol.

I bet it makes the UPS drivers day .

That's my goal to have enough crops to take care of all my families medical needs, far too many cupboards full of harmful pharmaceuticals for my liking.

I hear all that. Tomato plants are good cover for cannabis so maybe one can "accidentally" spring up in the middle!

Another thing I love on a solid GH is a locking door...won't stop the jackboots from kicking it in but will keep out the nosy neighbors and kids.

Even here, where it is legal, it's nice to know my crop won't disappear while I sleep.

I use triple walled polycarbonate and it is amazing stuff. Super rugged, lightweight and easy to handle (during construction), and cuts the UV which makes it a pleasure to be in the GH.

Week 7: Everything is clicking along on the coast of Maine in the dead of winter! At this point I am just managing canopy and making sure they get watered and some additional nutrients (Big Bloom every other watering). For sure they have another 4 weeks, maybe more....

Just checked the seed info from Seedsman and both Lowryder #2 and Northern Lights x Big Bud (both autos) have a 9 week "harvest from germination", so looking towards end of Feb which fits well with using the Box to get a head start on Summer crop. Currently 48F here...in January...climate chaos on the coast of Maine.
:yikes:

Well, snowing and 15F here right now. Since I "modified" the box by raising it about 18" to make it easier to handle plants and lights, I effectively altered the volume of the box. This resulted in an increased temp, all things remaining equal, to 85F and 75% rh. The heat not so much an issue but I was concerned the buds could get mold issues at this temp so I turned off the germinating mat and checked it 24 hours later. Oops...temp at 62F (too low with lights) and 42% rh (which is good). Since there is 4 hours of lights of occurring today I plugged the germinating mat back in and will check rh in the afternoon when lights are back up and running. Part of the issue is that I didn't have the fan running yesterday as it was overcast and cold...in those circumstances better to just let the box slowly lose heat and recover once lights return.

We just got a small light dusting down here.....I was hoping for more snow!!

We already got 6" and roads are nasty since the temp is 15F...still dumping. Just checked the box and GH is 32 and lowest temp today was 57F, so that germinating mat is key. Lights were on when I went in and temp was 70F (and climbing). 77% rh again so I need to figure that one....
Your grow box is looking good buddy!

Thanks. I wasn't expecting a winter grow to be such a delightful distraction in the middle of winter...love the fact it is howling outside and the three ladies are quietly & contentedly budding out in the Box!

I am near the NH/Mass border and I can't get my RH up at all. Its about 24% in my tent without the humidifier on.....wish I could take some of your RH LOL.

Interesting. I don't have any experience with grow tent material or its porosity. Would have thought the reflective lining would hold moisture better. I was wondering if it is somehow connected to my germinating mat gently heating the soil and off gassing the water vapor? Droplets collect on the inside of my box (Also, I am a mile from the ocean and there is a 300-gallon stock tank in my GH...so maybe that's part of it!) It only spiked when I modified it (from 55/60% which was optimal). I need a few more days to tweak it, but that mat is a key piece of my puzzle. If you have one maybe try it under your pots and/or a bucket of water??

Ah, yes, being closer to the coast makes a lot of a difference.

I run a carbon filter in my tent so I don't think that helps keep the moisture inside the tent. Even with a small humidifier, I can only get my RH up to the low to mid 30s

I have a small oscillating fan I considered putting in there just to move the air...might be my next move if I don't see some stabilization. Funny how we are battling in different directions!

Would reducing your fan speed help resolve this?
