Is there a easy recipe out there that doesn't require a lot of skill? Looking for a lotion
The first thing to note here is that most of you who have been making creams are making what we call in the professional world "body butters." There seems to be no difference between what I see here as creams and what I know to be body butters. As such, I will probably be found to call them body butters from time to time, though I will try to learn to use the language of the site and call them creams.
A body butter -- or cream -- is composed of oils and often beeswax to thicken the mix. So when someone tells me that they make a cream of coconut oil and grape seed oil and possibly avocado oil, combined with beeswax as a thickener, then they are telling me they are making a body butter.
A lotion is composed of oils and sometimes beeswax sometimes not that uses an emulsifying agent to combine them, much like mayonaisse is an emulsification between oil and water using egg yolks to emulsify them together. When someone tells me they are making a cream with coconut oil and grape seed oil and avocado oil, combined with water and BTMS-25 (an all-natural emulsifier derived from plants) as a thickener, then they are telling me they are making a lotion.
The primary difference between the two kinds of product are that one is an oil product and one is an oil and water product, where the water and oils are combined with some kind of emulsifying agent (because as we all know, water and oils don't normally mix together).
I have back and disc problems and didn't realize that there are so many different ways to medicate. I'm looking for something that I can use at work and is easy to make. Not sure which ones are for meAre you sure you want to make a lotion, which has an emulsifying agent? I just wanted to be sure that you read Magus' post on lotion/cream/body butter since the terminology here makes a difference in recipe:
Thanks I'll give it a try. I have a mbm2 just set it and let it do it's thing. I tried with coconut oil but didn't work real wellDepending on how well you can reach your own back and whether you will have a problem with the "product" ending up on your clothes (which it probably will no matter what, and it will probably be green in one shade or another), I have found that straight oil works for back pain on my wife. My version that seems to be absorbed fastest is 50/50 pumpkin seed/grape seed combo. I decarb, break up the buds, cook in oil in a crock pot (I do 4 hours on, 4 hours off, 4 hours on, 4 hours on - stirring occasionally and always under 200º F), allow to cool, strain, and go!
How much oil you use will depend on how much bud you have to cover and how big your pot is. But the ratio of THC/oil will determine the strength. Higher is better.
Regular coconut oil is not the kind recommended in this thread. Fractionated coconut oil is, which is available from amazon and maybe health food stores. The reason I didn't use it the second time is it isn't as easily absorbed as pumpkin seed and grape seed oil, so it left me feeling too greasy. I still use a blend of all three at home because I like to be able to spread it around like a massage oil, but when I'm at work or out and about I use just a blend of the other two so I feel less oily. Thanks I'll give it a try. I was going to do 2 cups of grape seed oil to 14 grams of bud.Regular coconut oil is not the kind recommended in this thread. This is wonderful news! I've been getting fabulous reports about this from all over. We need a name for that pad of skin. Any ideas? I went looking through some anatomy books, but got distracted.
That doesn't seem like enough oil to cover 14grams of budBased on OldBear's spreadsheet (and I always assume 10% THC to be conservative), that's only going to give you 2.37mg THC/ml oil, which I think isn't strong enough. I'd go with something closer to 100ml oil (3.4 ounces) for 14 grams of bud. That gets you into the 10+ range (11.20mg/ml).
The last batch of my oil only came out to 6.3mg/ml (I didn't calculate until I was done, grrr...) and I'm going to redo it to double that ratio.
Here's a link to Oldbear's spreadsheet post. It's a google doc you can download as Excel and change with the numbers you want.

InTheShed, thanks so very much for your reply. I'm not treating pain at this time although this may be a later consideration. I have a list of ailments as long as my arm. I'm actually trying to preserve the terpenes which get destroyed by heat. I'm using recipes specifically for this outcome.
When you say what is the strength of the rosin, I'm going to take a suggestion that I go for plants that are very purple. I've found Lemon Skunk, Granddaddy Purple, Glue Dream, and Kushberry. I'm still researching terpenes.
All the best,
Kelly
Ok folks, I've watched a ton of videos on making a canna cream or salve or balm. I've decided to make it with rosin. There are no videos on that. But I have decided to add the rosin to the slowly simmering oil. I'm not going to decarboxylate it. I don't want a psychoactive cream. The question is, how many grams of rosin should I add to the recipe?
Here is the recipe: 1T Aloe Vera, 1/2T grapeseed oil, 1T shea butter, 3T Coconut oil, 1/2oz beeswax.
The coconut oil is usually infused with the cannabis. Since I'm not infusing, I suppose I could use any kind of oil I wish.
Thoughts?
Thanks, Kelly
You'll need to decide what you want the topical to do Kelly. If it's for pain, THC should be the dominant cannabinoid.
Edit: Sorry Kelley, I knew you weren't using it for pain. Tired from all the change.
I like the recipe. A nice small batch. I may try some tomorrow to see how it works. Aloe gel?
InTheShed, I honestly don't know who maintains this site. So I'm not sure if it's you? But I would like to say, for the record, that I am so grateful.
Based on a cursory look, I want a combination of CBDa, CBD, CBG, CBC, CBN, THCa, THCv and THC. Since I take a high THC strain at night, I won't need it in the cream. Although I do need to think ahead about how I am going to keep some of that on hand when I'm out of my house. Maybe I will make two creams?
FYI, people who are super sensitive to cannabis can get a high on product that hasn't been decarboxylated. Even raw has small amounts of THC.
Great talking to you.
Kelly
