I heard you @Buds Buddy & @ReservoirDog that I need to get this girl in her SIP bucket ASAP. Not only that, but she had gone quickly to a one day watering cycle.

So, first thing Saturday morning I put Pebbles in her new/last home. The bucket was already prepared and the soil amended with Geoflora Veg. I pulled out the placeholder, sprayed and coated the rootball with Dynomyco, then put her in her new home. I pressed the sides to make sure they were snug, and then used the soil that was in the placeholder to mound up around the outside. Then I gave her about 500ml of water around the new root-ball to make sure it was well incorporated to the rest of the bucket. She looks a lot bigger in her new home than I thought she would.

One of my favorite tools is my Wyze cameras. Not only can I check on the plants from anywhere, but I can step back and forth in the video any time. That means I can see how she looks compared to 1 hour ago, or 5 hours ago. I can step 30 minutes at a time through the current day to see when she's praying, when she goes limp, and exactly when the next node comes out.

One of the reasons I'm sold on hydro is that I can see on my cameras that hydro never stops moving and growing all through veg. Then I compare that to soil. When my soil plants were on a 3 day watering cycle, I could see them go crazy the day they were watered, slow down the next day, and basically stop moving the last day.

I'm excited moving to the SIP buckets because I'm hoping to see constant activity from this girl. Unfortunately, I haven't seen much so far. Since she went into the SIP bucket on Saturday her growth up top has slowed way down. She's been moving around and praying the whole time, just not much growth up top. I'm assuming there's a lot of root activity going on and next time I use the SIP bucket I'll get her in the bucket earlier.

That said, she had enough of the 5th node up for me to get my scissors on this morning, so off with her head! She'll be ready for some LST soon. Even though the stem for the 'top' was less than 1/4", I dipped it in some clonex gel and put it in a moistened EZ-Gro plug. I doubt it has enough stem to do anything with, but I was starting a new tomato seed and had the dome/heat mat out, so why not? I've never tried to start a cutting this way so I'm giving it a shot.

It wasn't until I was reviewing the pictures for this post that I noticed the pistils! Looking back I don't see any pistils in the shots from Saturday. Is she ready to flower or just showing her sex? Did the stress for the up-pot make a difference? Hey, I got five nodes and got her topped, so she can go crazy for all I care. Let's see what you got Pebbles!!!

In my experiments I've noticed that it can take a plant that's used to a wet/dry cycle 10-14 days to acclimate to the new, constantly wet environment. The roots seem to have to transition to more of a water-type root. Once you get through that period they take off.

So, yes, one more reason to get them adjusted as early as reasonable.

I've found that I have better success tranplanting them as normal, keep the reservoir dry for a few days to a week and then put a little water in the rez for the roots to find then gradually up the level. Seems to help the transition.

Thanks Az. I hope it doesn't take two weeks! Your strategy above sounds good, if she finishes her first res and is still lagging I may hand water a few times. We'll see how she manages this first res.

That's the thing, though. She won't drain the rez for a while, and the soil wicks up the water in it keeping the soil moister than they're used to. If you filled the rez, maybe try to drain some of it out. Tip it to the side with the drainage hole and get most of it out. That should help a lot.

Thanks Az. I tipped the bucket and was able to drain most of the res, removing about 2l. She should start drying out a little now.

How do I know when to start adding to the res?

Buds said that when he drops the gage in the fill tube he can hear a dell thud when it's empty and is how he judges when to add more. If you can get that same response I'd only add more water once she'd drained what was already there. No sense adding more sooner since it won't get used and there are more chances for something to go wrong.

Thanks makes sense. I'll give her a day to drain some of the water in there now then just add a little water to the res at a time until she really starts drinking. Thanks a lot for your help.

I strongly disagree. Do not transplant with a dry reservoir, I implore you. A low reservoir is great, but there needs to be a moisture gradient pointed down, right away. Resist second waterings also. By all means, after the plant is established, add your weekly teas or whatever. Use less than a quart to avoid leeching, esp. if it's nitrogen-heavy ferts. I do half, 500ml, weekly 'worm-plus tea'. I believe these are fundamentals, based on 1st hand experience of approx 250 SIP-months of growing - 10 SIPs x 24 months, approx, but more importantly, based on my polling of experienced and educated peeps who post on the topic regularly on gardening sites, etc.

Thanks RD. I'll make sure to keep some water in the res. I am keeping it on the low side for now until Pebbles can catch up.

The only top watering I plan to do is after top-dressing with Geoflora. I'll top dress and then add 1/4" of fresh soil, then water with a sprayer until the top 2" is wet. After that the SIP should keep the soil plenty wet enough for the microbes in the Geoflora. I won't need to do that for two weeks, though.

Yeah, that's the routine @Emilya Green uses as well. You may be aware if this already. She just transplanted 6 big clones into tubs like mine a few days after dropping some smaller ones in buckets, like yours. We may have ruined Emilya by separating her from her famous watering regime. She's going just fine so far, nice to see.

She also mentioned that her geoflora is dissolving on its own accord w/o watering. My fertigation from below is going really nicely too. I mean, not that I doubted after so many tomatoes, but for some reason there's always that thought when doing cannabis in something for the first time, "will it work?" 'Course it will, dumbass! Dunno why I have that bug...

Oh, I'm definitely following @Emilya Green her thread is the reason I was using the wet/dry cycle to begin with (which BTW worked fantastic). She also has a lot more experience in feeding and supplementing Geoflora. It definitely looks like she has her hands full with the SIP plants exploding in growth.

My plans are based on Emilya's success so far. And, it's easy to hear that it's going to work, but it's always nice to see it for yourself as well.
Looking on track:thumb: Probably go nuts on you any day now.
Thanks Vet oh I expect them to take off once they take hold. It's never fun to see them slow down, though, especially autos. I do have to remind myself that it's only been 19 days, though ;)

Sounds to me like everyone's doing this a little differently. I up-canned from a 1 gal. plastic pot to the 5 gal. SIP Bucket. Filled the res. completely & Top watered with about 40 oz. I probably top fed 3 times the first week. After that they were drinking from the res. At first about 1/2 gal. per day. Within 5-7 days a gal. per day. Now, 2 gal. per day.
