Lexort's Kaneh Bosm CFL Garden

At one point in time, I concerned myself greatly with runoff ppm and ph. I too was extremely confused by my readings.
Then I stopped doing it. It was exhausting and crazy.
Now, I never do it, and I'm extremely happy and growing wonderful things.
I'd love to help in some technical way, but can offer no such help.
I look at my plant. If the brand new growth is bright green, I dose her slightly higher. If it's coming out too dark green, I lighten the mix. Works great for me. PH to 5.5 - 5.6. KISS.

In essence, learn cannabis plant behaviors and let them guide you into doing what is necessary for them. Plus, it will give you many many questions to ask here on :420:

In essence.. yup. There are many variations on the theme, but you'll settle into many successful habits and are already exercising many.
Sorry to be so "hippie" about it... I too have a slightly scientific mind and always want numbers wrapped around everything. The bottom of a hempy pot is apparently no place for such silly notions. I learned this from others and pass it on in hopes of maintaining your sanity.

Hey tead maybe you can calm my nerves before i go with hempy, everyone says cannabis doesnt like wet feet (roots) but essentially by growing hempy style you are indeed letting their feet be wet since the water doesnt go out drainage holes completely since yours are on the side of the container so how doesnt the plant end up over watered or end up with root rot? On a side note i think im gonna go back to ph'ing my plain water sorry OMU.

Hey Lex.
Tead and VP have it right and
-yes you are overthinking it. I also wouldn't think that you'd be able to make same-day observations if your plants didn't like distilled water, unless the effect was pretty drastic. Of course- I'm not the one there looking at your plants so that might be a dumb thing to say. I just think if the distilled water was having a flushing effect or something that you wouldn't notice the effects on the same day. Could be other mystery issues though, as I've experienced.
-Distilled water (or rainwater) should not affect your medium ph, but
-I see absolutely no harm in adjusting it. And have also experienced absolutely no harm in personally doing it for many years. Go for it :thumb:
-please always double check and calibrate your ph tester and keep the ph on the low side. I do not like being over 6 and believe that 6.2 or higher will cause issues, especially factoring in tester innacuracies and the fact that ph often seems to creep upwards for some reason, and I suspect it does this in the pot.
- people can water lots in mediums like perlite, coco, or rockwool because they naturally retain less water. Water the crap out of coco and no matter how much you try, it's still nice and fluffy and aerated. Peat moss isn't the same and can easily be overwatered. (Rockwool too in the early growth stages).
EDIT- Oh I see that you're asking about hempy specifically and it's little water reservoir at the bottom... I'll let Tead answer that one.

Alright I will be going back to ph'ing my plain water and i will shoot for 5.8, thank you all for helping me out. And thanks for clearing up the whole watering perlite bit.

Keep your ph lower than 5.8. I hit 5.5 or 5.6. The solution will be sitting in the plant for several days between feedings.
Do a test for yourself some time. Use you own water, and mix up a batch ph'd to whatever. Record the rise over time. I did this. You'll learn your specific move using your specific mix. I found that on the first day or two, I rose .1 a day. Maybe a bit more on day one.
The idea is that I start below the optimum 5.8 and let my water drift thru the 5.8 range as my 3 day cycle progresses. 5.5 or 5.6 on day one will leave me at about 5.9 or 6 when I feed again. Get it? You're drifting thru the optimum range allowing the specific elements that do a bit better on either side of 5.8 get some love too.

As for the wet feet concept... Hempys grow root masses more like balls in soil... not hanging roots like other hydro forms. The res at the bottom is really just a res, not so much a growing zone. Evaporation pulls nutrients and water thru the medium as the days go by between waterings. Wet feet are not an issue at all unless you're watering too frequently.

Tho hempy pots are a form of hydro (passive drain to waste), one really should think of them more as a soil grow in some ways.

Ya that actually makes sense tead. As i was reading what you wrote about how ph rises and how you ph to 5.5-5.6 at first i was like well that seems a little low but then it clicked in my mind that if ph rises eventually you would allow all nutes to be absorbed and that was before you even said that part lol im a slow reader so ya lol. Hmmmm i think I should give that a go, ph has been a thing i keep thinking i have a grasp of but keep running into issues with so i obviously don't have a grasp of it lol. Thank you tead. Hey wrecked thanks brother i been doing alright ya this is some intresting conversations lol.

Hey Lex! Looking good, looking good, the bosm garden definitely looks good! When harvesting, what is your usual yield using cfl's and the size pots your using?

Well to be honest i haven't got an exact number because I just recently got a scale. What my estimate for last harvest was 2-2.5oz off the 3 plants i had i figured that since a eighth last me 3-4 days and i was able to smoke everyday all day for 2months. I filled 3 pintsized mason jars and 1/4 a mason jar as well. I grow in 2-liter soda bottles except one of my girls currently in flowering is in a cut off Gatorade bottle so thats even smaller lol

Got my led strip lights and haven't put them in yet lol busy life right now. O ya i took a clone of my big bushy plant in veg, it was more like i trimmed the top off that girl and didnt want to waste it so i got another clone to root for lol. Im actually running out of room really but im gonna throw the clone directly into flowering when it roots, i was inspired to do this by a older journal on here, o and it will be in a small hempy pure perlite so that will be a first for me

Ya it sure is interesting im learning new stuff daily. I been testing the led light strips in a room with low light before i put them in the box and at first i was looking at them and thinking o well their not so bright but when i turned them off i couldn't see shit lol
