OK, back to Black Dog.
Their lights are an anachronism but they are doing some R&D. If you look at the spectrum that they're hawking, they've added some LED's in the UV and far red parts of the spectrum. So they are doing something to "improve" the product.
The complete lack of data that can be used to compare their products to others is one of the many reasons for concern.
Another interesting issue — where are they located? I used to live in Broomfield, CO which is near Boulder, Longmont, and Niwot. Those are three names that appear on the the BlackDog website.
Boulder is name dropping. It's home to the flagship campus of U of Colorado and it a high tech area (my company did a fair amount of work for US West Direct which was HQ'd in Boulder). They do not have a facility there any longer but they still have the address.
The address in Longmont was occupied by a dog grooming company for some years but, apparently, shut down a couple of years ago. Perhaps BlackDog occupied that space after the dog grooming business cratered.
The address in Niwot is a building that appears to be owned by and is occupied by a decent-sized distribution company. Perhaps Black Dog was leasing space? Dunno.
OK, that took all of five minutes with Google maps to find out. To get more info about the company, I called them. I pressed "1" for sales and, hold on to your hats, it went to voice mail. Wow, they must be sooo busy!
I hung up rather than leave a call back and, a few minutes later, Jay called me back. He explained that they were in the process of moving and assured me that they were still in business and shipping product.
I bought a Kind LED in 2017 when I did my first grow. The plants revegged after I incorrectly reset a timer after a power outage and I archived my tent until early 2021. The LED world was a lot different in 2021 vs 2017. Blurples had been replaced by bar lights, among other things, and manufacturers were providing customers with data about their lights one being PPFD. I contacted Kind and got the PPFD map for my light. It's shown here.
After I stopped laughing, I walked out to my garage, put it back in the box, and put the box in the trash.
Why? Because it wasn't worth using.
I could have used it to get a crop but there was no reason to do so. Blurples, even the Black Dog "blurple plus", though they call it something different, make it very hard to see your plant, even with the LED glasses, their light cast its incredibly uneven, and they're low efficiency.
If there were no alternatives, I'd use one but, as I realized with Kind XL 600, there's a place for that style of light and it's certainly not in a cannabis grow tent.
Assignment for the reader - get a PPFD map from Black Dog and compare it to a PPFD map from any contemporary bar style light. I'll put money on it that it can't even compare to a board light and we know how bad those are.
Second, get tests done by an independent third party. You might call the vendor and see what
kind of song and dance you get the response is.
Lacking that kind of information and based the wholly outdated design of Black Dog lights, I can't think of a reason why I'd seriously investigate their product line, much less buy one of their lights.
