LED light

Yeah the other bloke was saying fans are not a good idea which I thought was a strange comment considering fans are an absolute necessity indoors!!
Most lights you can remove them but it’s still a good idea to keep air flowing through the plants to prevent any problems. CL🍀

I'm not a bloke, and I meant fans on the lights themselves - Ideally they should be producing more light than heat, but I didn't take into account running it in tiny spaces.
Yeah it does seem strange these still have fans on board!
And it is just something else that could fail!
All that said the grows I've seen done with em look excellent!!
I was having a look at some stuff on YouTube about them and it's all positive on there too!!
Sorry for assuming you were a bloke too!

Just wondering what other growers think of the Black dog led lights. Their supposed to have better quality leds. Thanks in advance
I've looked at their products a couple of times since I started growing (again) in early 2021 and I could not come up with a good faith reason to buy or recommend their products.

Having said that, both Black Dog and Kind, who were popular in the days of "blurple" lights, are still in business so someone is buying their products.

The few minutes I've spent poking around their site were enough. There are so many well designed, high quality, low cost grow lights on the market that do not use hype and BS and that do publish detailed specifications about their products that, for me, Black Dog isn't a contender.

Check my grow journals and you'll see that I have a 2' x 4' tent and own four grow lights from three vendors.

That was one of the characteristics of old style - I call them "box" lights - lights. They were highly inefficient in terms of converting watts to photons so designers created an enclosure and installed fans. Those are antiquated designs that have been replaced, first, by the board light design which has, in turn, been superseded by bar lights.

Bar lights have no need for fans. Bar lights are cheaper, more efficient, lighter, and have a far longer lifespan than the previous designs of lights. I have one board light and three bar lights. My current grow current using a three bar light running at just over 300 watts and it's warm to the touch. Temps on that light range from 95° F to 107°F. No fan needed.

Don't think I'd consider this hype and BS! It's all on their website!

IMO...overpriced.

Look into something with Samsung LM301H diodes and a decent driver.
Osram are also good.

ViparSpectra has rail lights. $429.00 for 500 watts. Full spectrum white and red diodes.

It's awfully hard to see the health of your plant under blurple lights.

Why spend a grand when you can get the job done for half price?

Rail lights have a better spread too.

I'd steer clear of anything with a fan attached. Just more possibilities of things going wrong/ breaking. Impossible to wipe down thoroughly if you ever happen to have a hermaphrodite or male throwing pollen all over. Overall maintenance is much easier.

Sound advice, why buy 10 year old technology and pay more for it? Imho CL🍀

I fan i can replace for 20$ pretty easy.
As in walking in to a shop buying and pluging it in.
A fan on a light is very much old tec and the avg user is not going to replace it.
Add the extra noise have you heard one there loud again home stealth users dont want or need extra noise.
We have moved forward a lot now.
Heat sinks do a better job hence black dog being one of the only makers still using them. (fans)
So why not use one instead of fans at this point blowing that hot air around your space.
That would mean a redesign why when people still getting fooled into paying $1000 for 400 watt.

And most of all mate i could buy 3 mars or vipar lights close to the same specs.
For the same price its a rip of simple your reading forums or journals from years ago.
Its 2023 get with the times it WAS a good light its not now simple.

5 XS1500 PRO's
3 FCE3000
3 kC2500

The list could go on ;)

Just because a statement is made on the manufactures web site does not mean it is not hype or BS. There is no "rule of life" that says that manufacturers will always tell the truth when they self-promote their own products and services.

it's just not a cost effective solution. there is newer cheaper more available new tech out there.

I really don't care I've got enough money to afford high quality lights like HLG!!
If you trust Chinese companies who steal light designs and make cheap inferior copies of them that's completely up to you!!
The only light mentioned in this thread I would leave running for long periods of time in an in closed space in my home would be HLG or Blackdog!

Almost everything is made in China!
There are many different grades of quality that the Chinese make and some go into higher end lights and the lower quality go to the lower end lights!! This applies to everything made in China from shoes to electrical goods! The lower end stuff is garbage weather it be shoes, electrical goods or LED lights!
I didn't give any advice for you to correct I simply stated that I thought Blackdog lights were over priced and they still had on board fans but I would use them over others mentioned in this thread! 🤣
I don't need to run cheap chinese lights to know other brands are better either it just common knowledge! Even though all the parts are made in China! 😉

I love my LED lites, very efficient and cost is minimal to run. I didn’t even think most growers even use HGL lites anymore, at least personal growers. I’m running a ViparSpectra and I couldn’t be happier , you shouldn’t trash talk Chinese technology, covid created a shortage of chips for vehicles, the chips come from China not the USA.

All you need to know is use Samsung LM301B/H or Osram chips with a quality driver in a strip/bar light configuration.
About the only thing that matters after that is the thickness of the aluminum the chips are put on and if they are seated on a heat sink.
Whether this is done in US or China is meaningless

And as with everything in life if you want it done right you do it yourself.

the majority of our chips come from taiwan not china. china is known for really really crappy chips. it's the number 1 reason china wants to invade and subjugate taiwan. there will be a war over it, it's only a matter of when.

the US defense industry is dependent on chips from taiwan, and does not want that tech in china's hands. tsmc - the corporation based in taiwan has recently moved a large portion of its manufacturing to the US specifically to negate this threat.

nearly all of the r&d going into the industry is carried out in the US and taiwan. the tech itself was originally american.

edit : taiwan is an independent free democracy that is not part of china.

Taiwan is China.
Their official name is literally The Republic of China.
When the US does this it will be a far more monumental mistake than the current huge mistake in Ukraine.

I suggest everyone start building up at least a one year supply of stored food because the US is going to start spiraling pretty quickly.

I just bought a mushroom tent that I can grow fifteen 5 pound blocks of mushrooms in, great quick growing food source that can be grown year round indoors, Also going to set up sprouts and microgreen grow which is also quick and easy food source.

the US is already in conflict with China and has been for a very long time. it is not presently winning.

Ukraine is an independent and free country that has been under constant attack by a foreign superpower for a decade now. if you can't defend democracy there then you don't deserve it at home either.

Respectfully disagree.

The US is 100% at fault for Ukraine.
The US created and pushed a coup to take out the democratically elected leader in 2014 and replace him with a US puppet.
That caused Crimea, and the Donetsk and Luhansk regions to secede from Ukraine under protest.
These regions have been their own Republics for 9 years and no longer Ukraine. They then voted by a margin of 95% to be annexed by Russia.
Russia immediately annexed Crimea largely to keep its huge naval base there.
They then tried every possible peace solution for 8 years, signed one which as it turned out was just a ploy by the US to give them time to arm Ukraine.
The US has been knowingly arming nazis in Ukraine to have them terrorize and murder ethnic Russians in the Peoples Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk which they have been doing for 9 years.
The DPR and LPR voted to be annexed and begged Russia to intervene to stop the massacre.
Russia was finally given no other choice.
This is all the fault of the US, 100%

The US then committed an act of war and international terrorism by bombing the Nordstream pipeline.
All this is solely to stop Russia from selling LNG to Germany, so Russia sells the LNG to India which then marks it up and resells it to Germany.

Now we're Saber rattling with China.
A country that could destroy our economy without firing a shot.

This is not going to end well for anyone especially the US.
Because of this total insanity we have lost the dollar as the world currency, no more petrodollar and considering our currency is all by fiat and not backed by gold that will more than likely lead to the US dollar going the way of the Peso.

Two documentaries done in 2016 and 2019, show pretty much how this truly started.
