Kali Mist CFL Scrog Grow Journal - 05-19-13

You and I have the same freebies. :):) Ive got the NLxBBauto going and she is a beast! For an auto I cant get the cola to stop growing. Id guess she is 30" from stem to stern and shes been lst'd twice, scrogged, and almost burned. I want to see someone grow her to her full potential.
Good weed btw sir. ;)

I was just going to suggest the NLxBB. From research, it sounds like a memorable strain, and you confirm it. I bet it would be fun to grow. She's an eager lil thang, I understand.

Crimson, I have read more than once to stay away from miracle grow with marijuana plants. I don't know, or can't remember why.

The beef w/ Miracle Grow is a bit of a personal matter for some growers. First problem (and probably the biggest) is the time released nutrients that are used in the majority or their soils and fertilizers (Crimson's stuff looks free of this). These have fried up and destroyed countless cannabis plants. Older beginning growers are especially aware of this because back in the day there was no 420magazine to run to and ask why your plant shriveled up and died. City folk like me had to learn by trial and error until cannabis information became more available.

Over time the knowledge spread, more cannabis friendly website popped up, and people learned to work w/ or around Miracle Grow. W/ the proliferation of pro-cannabis websites, ideas spread and a few entrepreneurs took notice of a certain demand. They began producing new products and competed for the attention of the cannabis grower. This created a sort of affection or loyalty towards certain companies w/ Fox Farms being a prime example.

I feel that this leads to another emotional aspect of the anti-Miracle Grow attitude. For decades, the Scotts company dominated the home garden market soil/fertilizer wise and consumers were left w/ few choices if they didn't have access to smaller mom & pop garden centers. My how things have changed over the last ten years. All of a sudden, the financial power of a growing cannabis industry was being realized. Scotts noticed too and did what most companies would do; they began making attempts to either buy out smaller competitors or put out similar products. Go to any Home Depot, Target, Walmart and it doesn't take long to see that Scotts still dominates the shelves.

I feel this leads to another kind of resentment. Some people that haven't been burned by Miracle Grow like I have, either view them as "big business" vs. the little guy or they are simply going off the years of other growers preaching the "Fuck Miracle Grow" sermon.

I don't like their products personally, but I have been burned by the inferior quality combined w/ my ignorance. So I'm a bit biased. I also prefer to stand by the companies that actually took the risk to develop and market their products towards cannabis growers. If people ask, I always say fuck Miracle Grow. However, if that product can help someone grow their meds that's more important to me. I guess I've evolved into fuck Miracle Grow unless that's what works for you.

I hope this clears up some of the anti-Miracle Grow sentiment one reads so often about. And despite my personal feelings, there are plenty of successful grow journals here where people use those products. Hell, Crimson has been doing great!

i notice from the labels that Miracle Gro does not include any calcium or magnesium in their formulas that you have, cannabis requires both of these micro nutrients. when i started out i started with Miracle Gro potting soil thinking the nutrients would help the plants more that without any, i was wrong and had problems. If i had to recommend a fertilizer nutrient to someone i would recommend a more complete formula that has been proven to grow cannabis well without deficiencies. it is better to get used to mixing a small amount of nutrients with water and pH adjusting every time you water your plants then trying to rely on any company's formula that is not designed for growing cannabis. I would supplement your Miracle Gro fertilizer with a liquid calcium and magnesium formula to make up for what is lacking in the Miracle Gro.

Hi John, Thank you. I completely missed that, I believe your right that I need to add some calcium and magnesium. I'm going to order a fertilizer from amazon for flower, but theres so many to choose from, I really don't know where to begin. I'm on a tight budget so I'm thinking anything below $30 is fine. If its not too much trouble, would you could recommend a few for flower and possibly veg (in case I change my mind)

You and I must have ordered around the same time lol :) I think your the person to grow her to her full potential spimp :) I recall her fast growth from your journal. Sounds like I need to swing over and check her out!
I think the most challenging part of growing out an auto for me, is trying to sync up all the times. Currently I have the Kali clone vegging, I have my 3 plants which are ready to be harvested in about 45-55 days, I'm gonna cure them in the grow cabinet as well so maybe another 1-2 weeks? then I can toss in the Kali Mist and new plant and flip to flower. With an Auto, syncing all this up might be difficult.
Nonetheless, I'm a very big fan of NL and am seriously contemplating this strain next. How soon does she need to be flipped to 12/12?

I have read good things as well. Never smoked NLxBB but NL sure kicks butt :)

Hi Gadfly, I agree with what you said above. to add onto what you said, If its within someones budget to get nutes designed for cannabis, that's the route I'd want to take. When King John pointed out I was missing some macronutrients like calcium and magnesium it opened my eyes to the importance of getting a fertilizer designed for cannabis.

A grower may be able to do a good job with Miracle grow but think of what they could accomplish with a better fertilizer :). On a side related note I am experiencing problems with my grow into flower, the worst time in my opinion to be getting problems lol. I don't know what is contributing to the problem but I'm sure its the miracle grow (or at least part of the problem).

Update

The burnt leaf tips has been on a daily progression up to the top of the plants and is now at the upper most leaves. The burnt tips is NOT progressing further down the leaves and is centralized to only the tips. Less than 5 Lower leaves as of 3-7 days ago presented brown spots with what appeared to be some kind of crystal like formation, possibly fungus or mold, not sure. The Ph is at 7, maybe higher since this is runoff.

I fertilized with the 2-7-7 formula at half strength yesterday morning 7-27-13. The nutes did not appear to do anything for the plant as of yet, I'll use straight water for next few days.

The buds appeared to really slow down swelling and growing and have now shifted into THC production; shes getting much frostier all over. Also odor has inceased substantially as well.

To correct a possible magnesium deficiency I'm might add a teaspoon of epsom salt to a gallon of water.
To correct a possible calcium deficiency I'll add some washed and dried egg shells then blend to powderize it. Egg shells contain 93% calcium carbonate and is comparable to limestone and crushed corals

I'd say my biggest problem with adding in egg shells is I won't know how much calcium is being added to the soil. I've read too much calcium makes it difficult for the plants to absorb others, also that Magnesium and Calcium compete against 1 another and should be supplemented equally

This is the tap water in my area which contains trace elements

I have read good things as well. Never smoked NLxBB but NL sure kicks butt :)

Flipping a photo is completly up to the user and wat size parameters you have to grow. The longer the veg, the bigger the flowers. :) But dont let it get out of control cause when she doubles or triples in size, you dont want her licking te light! ;)
This being my first auto, I severly underestimated my lack of control regarding plant size. After some research I decided I would not defol or top/fim due to the stunting it causes and limited grow time of autos. The other issue Im relizing is th heat from so many CFL'(little over 300 actual watts) an i kinda seared some of thetop cola. I truely beleive my plant, under HID conditions, could have yielded 6-8oz's. Ya I said 6-8oz's from an auto. The density and growth unempeeded would have been outstanding. Another reason I'm gonna take a strong look at a new setup once funds become available. Which may never happen.

Good weed sir btw

if you are comfortable with dry nutrients i would recommend General Hydroponics MaxiBloom.

Ya, I'm completely comfortable with dry nutes so long as they work in soil :) Thank you so much for the quick response John + reps.

Just checked it out, Looks good and its incredibly affordable, Has all the macro and micro nutrients except possibly boron, unless potassium borate also has trace elements of boron?

Gonna order some today, Do you have a veg nute you'd recommend as well?

Looks like were in exactly the same boat spimp. I want to revamp my entire setup and grow space but... limited funds lol. I think it would be a lot of fun to dive into the world of hydroponics and HID lights :)

Many people arent gonna agree with this, but I think Hydro is overrated. It is superior for speed and yield, but soil provides better overall smoke IMO. More sticky, more flavor. But thats just from all other things being equal, lights, nutes etc. Seems like a hell of alot more can go wrong QUICKLY in hdryo. Im a "slow ride....take it easy" kinda guy I think. :)
