Jon's Sneak It In Auto Grow

Growing will tell you who you are and let you know what you need to improve on. The biggest thing it’s teaching me so far, and it’s an ongoing lesson and process, is patience. I’m not necessarily built for patience. But then I grow. Lol. See the conundrum? So yes, I am a more patient human being on all levels now versus the person I was three years ago in that regard. Growing has helped me improve as a human being.

I've always been on the impatient side but have matured much in that area. Not sure if it has to do with growing or having to wait on my wife for the last 25 years. She's never on time.

Why overstuff the tent? Wouldn't that just lead to possible disappointment and an unnecessary myriad of problems and issues?

I'm a habitual overstuffer. I routinely cram 4 plants in a 3x3. That's 9 sq/ft total, or 2.25 sq/ft per plant . Jon has a 5x5 (25 sq/ft). In my world he's got room for 11 plants. Stuff away big guy! That's how you get those 900g per sq/m yields!

To your first paragraph:
To the second paragraph: Exactly! Even if you factor in enough space between plants so nothing is touching I have plenty of space. The part I’m vacillating on is the arrangement of the pots in space. Seven is a weird number to arrange. It’ll be 7 7s. I’ve gone as far as to draw out every version I can think of, and it just doesn’t make sense with 7 pots. Lmao!

Hey @farside05, I have a question for you. You certainly have the skills to fill a 3x3 with one plant. Yet you put in multiple plants up to four as you said, right? So the question is, why? Isn’t one plant a lot easier to work than four? If you’ll fill the space regardless, what’s the difference?

Thanks!

I don't envy the conundrum of trying to figure out where to put them. I transitioned to GroBucket SIPs which has made life easier. I used to pull them all out and take them to the tub for watering when I was in fabric pots. It was my way of dealing with the run off. With SIPs I don't have run off. And with a 3x3 I can reach the plants in the back fairly easy. Now I only take them out occasionally for maintenance, ie training, cleaning up lowers, etc.

The answer is multifaceted.

Pros for 1 plant
Less labor

Less nute costs

Less container and growing medium costs

Less seed costs

Pros for 4 plants
Allows me to try more different strains.

I tend to do autos, vegging a photo to fill a 3x3 and then flipping takes longer than cramming 4 autos in a tent. Therefore I can crop out about 6 weeks earlier (remember that patience thing, lol).

Four plants in a 3x3 is kinda like a bastardized Sea of Green. I get more weight with it than one big plant. I've gotten 900 grams per square meter yields. So about 50% greater yields than breeder specs. I just finished a 2 plant grow in the 3x3 and would probably be lucky to hit the breeders numbers.

 Conclusion

The extra costs and labor associated with multiple plants is worth it to me. The increased yield more than offsets added expenses for extra pots, seeds, growing media and nutes. The electrical costs are basically the same, and they're the biggest expense I have in a grow. Having extra flavors on hand also keeps the consumers happy. I prefer indicas, the son sativa's, the daughter and wife will go with the flow but tend to prefer hybrids.

What a fabulous and highly detailed, clearly stated answer. You got skills. Thanks.

So in case you might be saying “why not just do 8 if you’re doing 7 anyway and keep the Gorilla Zkittlez in the tent?”….

:rofl: :rofl::rofl:

Here’s downstairs. You’d think the upstairs would be better given this, right? Lol.

Lol. I know what a lock is used for, what I was wondering is what you are referring to with the joke? What “lock” are you seeing?
I just assumed you put a lock on it to keep anyone from getting to the plants who shouldn't be getting to the plants in order to prevent what happened last week from happening again.

Neem spray every 3 days for 2 weeks and that's going to be a beast!

Ah. Duh. See? Toldja I was dumb. Of course. And LMAO! To the Neem - thanks for the reminder! Forgot all about Neem. That I can do.

Here’s the rest of the last two years of my life. Lol.

Although why I need extra duct tape since I live in Florida I don’t quite understand. Lmao!!

Edit: oh duh - to tape DeSantis’ mouth shut! Of course! Good call.

I hate early veg when there’s nothing worth posting pictures of and all you do is wait. To fill the time, here’s one - I use my real name here. I actually am Jon. But most of you guys have monikers or whatever you want to call your handle.

So…anyone got a good story about how they chose their handle or the significance of it?

Maybe that’ll work.

Big fan of the Gary Larson cartoons. About 25 years ago, when Yahoo Messenger was a thing, I went to create an account using Farside. It was already taken. So I had to add digits to the end until I found one that was available. When I came here I wanted to use a different moniker, but it took was already taken, so I dusted off the old Yahoo screen name.

How about 9?

3 rows of three. Problem solved.

:cheesygrinsmiley:
I’ve heard elsewhere on the forum that there was a time when you had something better to do than be a smartass. Like a journal, for example.

Ha! Just kidding @Azimuth. You know damn well I not only already considered that, but still am. Heh. Gotta decide by tomorrow as the seeds are coming a day early. But since @InTheShed did something for me he’s real good at and gave me a bit more food for thought that the Gorilla Zkittlez might have more potential than I’m giving her credit for, I’m leaning towards YES, going with 9. And for exactly the reason you said - it satisfies my anal retentive needs. Which is especially silly since 8 is as easy as 9. (3-2-3 vs 3-3-3) It’s only 7 that bugs me. The other idea is to use my new and smaller 34” hula hoop on one of the Watermelon Wedding Cakes and just go with the 7 as currently planned since that would cost me essentially 3’ square. I’ll figure it out by morning, as tomorrow is also uppotting day for the GZ, so it has to be done. One day I’ll join everyone else and actually figure my grow out ahead of time and stick to a plan. Lol. But you gotta admit, my…fluidity…..at least keeps it interesting. Heh.

Cool! I was too!

Gorilla Zkittlez
Aka: Quasimodo
Uppotting Day

Went with a 5 for the gnarly but hanging in there Gorilla Zkittlez. We’ll see how she does. She looks way out of center in the pictures, but her stem is actually centered, that’s just how mutant she is. She’s been growing that way since she sprouted. Lol.

Quasimodo was a no brainer for her name. Lmao!

We have decided to go with 8 plants. The six plants in Solos and the two I’ll drop today when the mail comes, the Pink Rozay and Apple Fritter. All the rest will go in 7s.

So:
2x Watermelon Wedding Cake
2x Platinum Mimosa Cookies
1x Dos Si Dos
1x Gorilla Zkittlez
1x Apple Fritter
1x Pink Rozay

Dos Si Dos appears to be our next uppot. Maybe a week.

Finally set. Yay.
