Jon's Outdoor Winter Photoperiod Grow

Tropicanna Banana
Flower Day 9

Here’s the cola which is by far the dominant one. A closeup and a shot of how the rest of the canopy is relatively in line for an unruly plant but this one towers above. Lol.

Cool thanks! And yeah, fill them you do! (I’m at least smart enough that I didn’t ask you randomly, I’ve been admiring your work almost as long as I’ve been in the forum!)

Did the Strawberry Cough make you cough? Lol.
It makes us cough like any other. I expect you to grow one twice that plant with your skills brother! It's a lot of fun! The SC was a clone in the furriest degree! She had more branches and leaves trimmed off her than you can imagine! I remember falling in lust with her!

Thanks so much @Hafta!!!! Excellent advice. I’ve done or do all those things. It sounds like I just need to put them all together. And yes, for me especially in a chair, having the space to work from below is key. So I’m with you and have a question: you topped the main stalk, yes? To establish the required amount of underneath space to work, above what node did you top the main, and starting at #1, how many nodes up did you eliminate/strip?

Thanks again. This is great and I appreciate the optimism and advice.
I will try to make this understandable .....

I do not strip or remove lower branches. They are the quickest way of getting energy to the roots and will provide the largest solar panels.

Because I was attempting to grow a monster, I topped the main stalk at the fifth or sixth node.

All lower branches remained on the plant and were topped at the third, after showing four nodes.

The two new "tops" on the main were topped at two, after showing four.

All secondaries between the main stalk and the topped locations were topped at three.

The access beneath the plant was accomplished by growing in a 16 1/2" raised bed with about nine cubic feet of soil. By the time it was impossible to circumnavigate the plant there was at least two feet of space between the ground and the branches (the branching was growing in an arc which increased the amount of available space below the plant as they grew). That was thirty years ago and I was quite a bit more nimble so crawling around wasn't too bad.

Depending on the height of your tent, you can raise the grow medium to provide as much space as you need.

Remember, with this method your radius will be about the same as your height, more or less (i.e. a five foot diameter will equal a three foot tall plant, more or less).

Here's a photo of my current grow a week into flower, sorry Emilya, after flip. This one is 16" tall, before this mornings training session.

Muchas Gracias, Senor @Hafta

I only have a couple days left to showcase this girl. I’m sure you guys are sick of it by now, but comme ci comme ca. So on (incredibly) only day 42 of flower we are close to finished. Wow. I’ll take early over late any day of the week. My least favorite part of the grow is waiting on the buds to finish and watching paint dry.

Here’s day 42 of flower, with an interior frost shot at the end.

I still see white pistils. You still thinks it's done?
Oh she’s not done @Azimuth. She’s just close enough that we’re counting days instead of weeks. The trichomes tell me we’re getting close. The window is open.

Note: I was in @Emilya Green journal and there was much discussion about counting flower post stretch or from day one of 12/12. Personally I count from day one of the flip to 12/12. This day 42 is 42 days since the flip. That is fast in my experience.

I have initiated an effort to answer this question by posing it to our sponsor, North Atlantic Seed Company. I asked them, in your marketing of flower times, do you guys list by days from the flip or days post stretch?

It’s a simple question so I asked. We’ll see what at least one seed company has to say on the issue. Should be interesting.

It's probably more like door #3 in that it is the initiation of flower, not just initial pistils, and not flip nor post stretch. But will be interesting to hear what they say.

Initiation of flower being when you get the start of the little puff balls and not just random pistils here and there. Lot's of judgement involved there but close enough by a day or two. That's how I do it at least.

However one does it is great, just wondering what an actual seed seller says. I only count days now for journal purposes. The plant is ready when it’s ready.

Here is one thought .....

Changing to 12/12 (flip) is a definitive action ending one grow cycle and beginning another. Anything else is a matter of opinion, as well as when to harvest.
I am also curious as to what the seed company says is the beginning of flower and what they deem as "ready to harvest" (end of flower).

Good point @Hafta, I could have asked them the second part of the question too. When/assuming they get back to me I will. But it is for the exact reason you start with that I start my count that day. And from that day I usually come pretty close to their times.

I see your point but the day of the flip is simply the day you send a message to the plant to start changing modes. I do hope the seed company decides that bloom starts when you see the first actual bloom.
