Scenes From Trim Jail #4
Fun With Red Hairs

One of the ways I've learned I can max my kief yield using the Trim Bin while minimizing any green that might come through the screen is to not squash it and press it around on the screen. This is the natural tendency and what I did when I first got it. And doing that will give you more, initially. A little. But it will also give you something with some shade of green to it. Anything the slightest green doesn't get the A+ rating or hit one of those little black jars and get labeled. So instead of squashing, I take big handfuls above the screen and grind it in my hands like hops, letting it fall back onto the screen. I go through the volume I'm kiefing that way first. Then I have found what works amazingly well is to toss it. Just like you would food in a frying pan. Let the pile fall as far onto the screen with it's mass/weight as you can get it up in the air on the toss. I clear the edges of the bin, easy. This keeps the green out, only the kief comes through, and it's an excellent way to get your first pass, A+ stuff in the bank. Oh yeah, and I freeze it first once it's bone dry for a couple hours too, that also helps a ton.

In any event, in the process of the toss, the lightest particles in the Trim Bin tend to fly out in little tiny clouds you can barely see or sometimes can. Well, as it turns out, the actual red hairs off the buds are the lightest particles in the mix! So when you're done tossing, and I found this accidentally the first time, now I do it on purpose - you end up with a table covered with a thin layer of almost entirely red hairs. A little green leaf, which is easily picked out.

Then you can smoke a giant, legitimate bong hit of almost purely red hairs. As I am about to do with this pile of Strawberry Lemonade red hairs. This is a pretty big pile but the stuff burns up so fast that this is about what you need for what I term a "legitimate" bong hit. Lol. And so far, every time I've tried it, it is reminiscent of the taste of the buds of that strain, but different, and it hits you as if you just got shot out of a cannon. The buzz is intense, super quick to hit you very hard, and extremely up up up. It pretty much makes you want to multi-task like a crazy person. Coke pot practically. You also pay a price for it. The expansion is significant and even vets will cough from this, or at least I do. For a while. It almost takes a recovery minute or two.

Whether or not to pay the price is the easiest decision one could ever make.

Mystery Girl

Our girl is beginning to get to her proper green. She was a bit yellowing already when she hit the pot. Almost there. Nice looking plant whatever she is.

Morning Jon! That kief looks awesome what kind of screen do you use? That would be much better for making gummies than bubble hash because it's not all gummed together. It's hard to render the bubble hash into a fluid substance. I'm going to do a citric acid extraction next because I wasn't too happy with the results using coconut oil.

Also, if you had one product to recommend for the roots in a soil grow, what would you pick? I never used any with my clones because the roots would be so packed into the 2L at the end I didn't see any need, plus it was perlite.

@Lisa2265 I made those gummies but they were my first ones ever, feel free to pm me with any questions and I'll help you if I can.

Have a great day one and all!

Hey BK, how are you? Thanks. This was done using the Trim Bin (this is an actual product, available on the Zon) and the screen it comes with, which I believe is a 150. So far I haven't gotten the finer screen to go under this one, but they make them. It's one of my favorite tools. I consider it poor man's (and lazy man's) way to get kief. Hell, I could turn it into hash with wax paper and an iron. I didn't know that about bubble hash, which essentially begins just like this stuff - as pure kief, correct? I am 100% certain the bubble/dry ice extraction method is going to net more kief than I get with the tray. But I guess the difference is the way I do it the kief is dry dust immediately, or a day or two later. I have never tried to do anything with it except top bowls or bongs, and roll it into joints. And collect it. Lol. I know I leave a lot of kief in the bank this way, but once I get to the point where a pass is showing the slightest green, that trim is done for kiefing and goes into bins for butter. Still has plenty of oomph left for butter this way.

Roots in a soil grow. Hmm. Off the top of my head, honestly, my answer would be microbes. One way or another.

But if you want an actual product from a nute line, I have had good success with Fox Farms Root Drench. It seems to maintain root health well if the tops of the plants are any indication.

Love the if you can only pick one type questions, lol. If you want one product that will help your plants every time, in every scenario, no matter what the strain, without fail, 100% guaranteed to help and make your plants healthier, stronger, and significantly more capable of transferring nutes from root to leaf - that is the all-important MSA (mono-silicic acid) at some high (40s) percentage. If I only get one I'll take that.

Hope that helps!

Got details?
Hey Shed I'll pm you.

Thanks Jon you're always helpful! The 4 plants grew beautifully in the 5 gal bags but I noticed the root balls were not massive. I'm going to be more cautious about evaporating chlorine from the water and use a tea during veg as well as flower. Always room to improve, but if I just continue growing plants similar to these last 4 I'll be very happy.

Nice BK. Might want to make extra sure you begin watering to the outside to get those roots to draw out wide beginning as early as you can. Effective watering, imho, is your surest way to a well-developed root ball. I know you can totally fill fives at least, you more than have the skills. That would be my suggestion. Be religious about it and see if it makes a difference.

Btw - you can have that conversation here if you like and not in PMs, just saying. Maybe more than Shed was wondering about the deets?

More Scenes From Trim Jail

This is how most of the Dos Si Dos buds are turning out. Smallish, longish, pointy-ish, sativa-esque, dense, frosty, and almost all have the little nubbin on top where the buds show their early. That top would have filled in if I had been able to give her another week. Oh well. At least the color and density is not terribly affected although there are more "light" buds on this plant than the other two. I'd say it seems about 65-70% of her buds are dense like they should be, and the others are not as dense as I'd like. Not terrible, not flarfy, not even what I'd call "airy," just not as dense as the rest. Her yield will also be the lowest of the three. After losing about a quarter of her to the aphids, she's likely to not even hit four ounces. Three something it looks like. Again, oh well. The Strawberry Lemonade makes up for her. Lol. And the good buds are sweet and stink to the holy heavens.

Just getting into the DSD this morning really, just wanted to show you guys what I'm dealing with. It was also an excuse to post. Lmao.

Genetics and Customer Service

You guys have heard me talk about my love for Humboldt Seed Company genetics. This coming up go I may give some of my Ethos genetics a try. Never tried them and heard great things, so I have some seeds.

When I was putting together my scrog and deciding on strains, I realized I could do a dedicated HSC grow using three of their strains. I wanted to know if the three I had would play nice together. So I reached out to the chat line, and then the email, to HSC themselves. And they got right back to me with specific, strain related information and answered my questions for the most part.

Today I got back my email response from the folks at Ethos. I asked them similar questions about the Mandarin Zkittlez strain I am considering growing from them. Their answers were, sorry, we only provide the info on the site for the strain, and we do occasionally publish these type informative articles which you can reach with this link. That is, they basically said sorry Charlie.

Just an interesting contrast worthy of note I thought.

EDIT: Forgot, I also asked them if they would have any interest in being a sponsor here. Offered to put them in touch with someone. They said "we do not participate in sponsorships at this time."

Morning Jon! I guess their 'ethos' is not customer service... you pays your money and takes your chances!
All I care about is the genes. Just sayin'. Lol. I have Crescendo coming from them this week too. Feminized photo. One of my favorite strains I didn't think anyone had. Ethos did. Sold.

Heh.

Apple Blossom sneak it in photo on day 34 of flower. Looks like she may be a frosty one.

She may be a frosty one.jpg

I'm already telling my friends I screwed this plant up and her yield is going to be compromised, so.....

At least they didn't give you their info@fukoffasshole.com e-mail.

There are a ton of small businesses in my area that refer folks to their general mailbox that they never bother to check. Wonderful customer service.
