Jon's First Outdoor Grow: Sugar Breath Photoperiod & Strawberry Banana Autoflower

Hey Jon! Go Bengals!!!! Sorry about your Eagles, I know that feeling all too well. Poor AJ Green, he's at least 0-6 in the playoffs now after last night. If there's a more humble and deserving player out there I don't know who it is.

Sorry I haven't been around, I went to Vegas to visit the family for the holidays and promptly got sick. My first sick day was 12/22 and I still have this freaking thing. Tested negative for covid on a home test on 12/23, I've been vaxxed and boosted and also had a flu shot and was hoping that would save me. It's been like having a low grade flu for a month and only in the last few days have I had much energy to do anything.

Your plants look gorgeous as always, please don't try to pass yourself off as a newbie any longer!

In a surprising development, my plants are looking gorgeous too! I'm growing 4 autos - 1 each gorrilla glue, gelato, wedding cake and zkittles. I'm halfway through flower and aside from some very early calmag issues with the GG I haven't had a blemished leaf. I'm loving the Great Lakes Water Only soil. The GG started showing calmag issues almost immediately so I started supplementing with calmag and that was the end of it. I've also been using a tea since early flower. It's so nice to have healthy plants again I'm really excited.

I'm curious how you're getting your seeds. I've only been able to find one seed bank that will take my credit cards. Back in the day I got most of my seeds from Herbie's and Barney's Farm, now neither will accept my card. I've had similar problems with Cali seed banks. I've been told I need to add some kind of authentication or something, but when I contacted my bank and Visa they didn't know what I was talking about. Any help with this would be appreciated, I'd love to get my hands on the strawberry banana auto amongst others.

Take care my friend. Who Dey!
Yo BK909, good to hear from you! Sorry to hear you've been sick too, seems like everyone is. Glad your plants are doing well! I love water only soil too, but Bill has turned me into a coco convert. The plants in the tent are in coco. It's awesome if you have time to water every day.

As far as seeds, I'm not sure what the rules are around here regarding that, so I am hesitant to answer here. I'll message you some options.

Glad you're back! Let's see the plants!

Heh. Throw them on the pile I guess....lol. Cool sticker too.

Training Question

Anyone who wishes to chime in on this, please do. I've heard many different answers to this question, but face the decision once again.

Do you release the branches from their bonds for the stretch? Or leave them anchored where they are and let them go from there?

Thanks guys!

Well, at least one of us is smiling....sorry....
Absolutely NO WORRIES my friend! Where did your watermelon wedding cake seeds come from? I may order some!

Made by Grower's Choice. Got them from an unsponsored seed bank so I don't wanna go into it here, you understand. But search it you'll find them. Make sure you get the name right: Watermelon Weddingcake Double XL auto.

Good morning Jon.
If the branch has held its position I have no issues releasing a tie if I need to.
Usually any branches I want out of the way are growing in the shape I want by then.
I find it subjective though.
Some I leave some I don't.
Hope you are well today my friend.

Stay safe

Same for me.

I leave them on for some time. Every plant is different it seems. Some will not need them but some do, so I leave them as long as I can. They fall off after a while mid flower and I let them go then.

My boys came through for me! Thanks for the help on the training question guys, it is much appreciated. The nice part is you're all basically saying the same thing - subjective, depends on what branches will hold their positions and the plant itself. That's about where I land. Last time I released all of them for the stretch. I couldn't wait to be able to water again, lol. But with this girl, I guess I can just pull the stakes up gently and see if the branch stays. If it does, it goes. If it wants to come up when released, it stays for now. Thanks again!

Thanks for the pm Jon, I'll let you know how it goes. Buying seeds can be as compelling as growing and smoking them.

This pic shows the 3 lights we talked about all those months ago, plus 4 9-watt reds to supplement flower.

Almost 4 weeks into flower and looking beautiful.
Wow BK909, really coming along there! I gotta be honest with you, I was dubious about your light setup. The reds seemed light. And I still don't know what you have going on with those spots, what kind of bulbs are they, T5s? But it all seems to be working out well for you. Nice job!

Hey Jon I'm a little worried too although the last plant, the only one I grew almost entirely under those lights turned out great and was very potent, it just went an extra 10 days or so. Those spots are the 9w GE red bulbs. This is my first time using them. I'm hoping (and pretty confident) it will work but I won't know for sure for another 5-6 weeks. If they don't work out I'll spring for the Mars that you have assuming all goes well for you.

Love that Blueberry - just beautiful!

Thanks man, I didn't realize they were the reds. So you have four (looks like five) of these, so going with four you're hitting them with 36 watts of reds. That's probably near the sweet spot. @Emilya is doing a very interesting experiment on exactly this right now in her journal you might want to check out. I'll be real interested to see how those things do. It's a unique setup in my experience. So far so good, right?

From what I remember, the GE bulbs do contain a small component of far red light, and I would be curious to learn what that percentage is. The lights I am using are a combination of deep and far red light only, about 30 watts worth. My main lights also have a large percentage of red to balance them out into "full spectrum" and that runs full time, and that red part of the spectrum is a needed component. I am also convinced that timing is everything and that constant exposure to the red part of the spectrum does provide for more photosynthesis, but it does not provide nearly the benefit that deep and far red do when used for a short time before the lights come on and for another short time after the lights go off. It is this deep and far red with very specific timing that I am experimenting with in my LSD journal.

Veg Day 60

Well, we've arrived at the magic number, today is day 60 of veg. I just did a final pre-flip defol up top, and this is how we're going to war. At 5 pm her night begins, and she will be on a 5 am to 5 pm daylight schedule, as that is when her mornings start currently and I like to keep that the same and trim time from the back end. Today, besides getting her set up for the flip, I had to do a bit of light sealing around the AC unit, as well as some duct taping up of various light leak spots in this very cheap tent. We're all sealed, all set, and away we go. I hope she puts on a good show for us. I am much happier with this canopy vs. the last three from the recent tent harvest. Much more space between bud sites, much more evenly spread out. Should provide for more electrons hitting each bud and as even of light distribution as the 420h will offer us. Once she starts to toss out some pistils we'll also raise the intensity of the light (I actually am not at 100% yet, lol, easier than raising it in this tent for me, and gives me room to play with simply turning the dimmer up) to whatever it takes to get her to around the mid 1100s and we'll start her there and see how she likes it. She practically fills the tent side to side with the outer edges of her canopy now, so I'm pretty sure the stretch will finish that part of the job. Training in the next ten days will be key.

The @Prescription Blend nutes have been spectacular. As has the @NextLight 420h.

Here she is, final veg pictures, from the side and the top. Go girl. Go.
